Book A Son of the Sun

  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book A Son of the Sun written by Jack London and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1912 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Willi-Waw lay in the passage between the shore-reef and the outer-reef. From the latter came the low murmur of a lazy surf, but the sheltered stretch of water, not more than a hundred yards across to the white beach of pounded coral sand, was of glass-like smoothness. Narrow as was the passage, and anchored as she was in the shoalest place that gave room to swing, the Willi-Waw's chain rode up-and-down a clean hundred feet. Its course could be traced over the bottom of living coral. Like some monstrous snake, the rusty chain's slack wandered over the ocean floor, crossing and recrossing itself several times and fetching up finally at the idle anchor. Big rock-cod, dun and mottled, played warily in and out of the coral. Other fish, grotesque of form and colour, were brazenly indifferent, even when a big fish-shark drifted sluggishly along and sent the rock-cod scuttling for their favourite crevices.

Book The Son Also Rises

Download or read book The Son Also Rises written by Gregory Clark and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How much of our fate is tied to the status of our parents and grandparents? How much does this influence our children? More than we wish to believe! While it has been argued that rigid class structures have eroded in favor of greater social equality, The Son Also Rises proves that movement on the social ladder has changed little over eight centuries. Using a novel technique -- tracking family names over generations to measure social mobility across countries and periods -- renowned economic historian Gregory Clark reveals that mobility rates are lower than conventionally estimated, do not vary across societies, and are resistant to social policies. The good news is that these patterns are driven by strong inheritance of abilities and lineage does not beget unwarranted advantage. The bad news is that much of our fate is predictable from lineage. Clark argues that since a greater part of our place in the world is predetermined, we must avoid creating winner-take-all societies."--Jacket.

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-04-26
  • ISBN : 9781788691482

Download or read book Lord of Formosa written by JOYCE. BERGVELT and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1624. In southwestern Taiwan the Dutch establish a trading settlement; in Nagasaki a boy is born who will become immortalized as Ming dynasty loyalist Koxinga. Lord of Formosa tells the intertwined stories of Koxinga and the Dutch colony from their beginnings to their fateful climax in 1662. The year before, as Ming China collapsed in the face of the Manchu conquest, Koxinga retreated across the Taiwan Strait intent on expelling the Dutch. Thus began a nine-month battle for Fort Zeelandia, the single most compelling episode in the history of Taiwan. The first major military clash between China and Europe, it is a tale of determination, courage, and betrayal - a battle of wills between the stubborn Governor Coyett and the brilliant but volatile Koxinga. Although the story has been told in non-fiction works, these have suffered from a lack of sources on Koxinga as the little we know of him comes chiefly from his enemies. While adhering to the historical facts, author Joyce Bergvelt sympathetically and intelligently fleshes out Koxinga. From his loving relationship with his Japanese mother, estrangement from his father (a Chinese merchant pirate), to his struggle with madness, we have the first rounded, intimate portrait of the man. Dutch-born Bergvelt draws on her journalism background, Chinese language and history studies, and time in Taiwan, to create an irresistible panorama of memorable characters caught up in one of the seventeenth century's most fascinating dramas.

Book The Moon Goddess and the Son

Download or read book The Moon Goddess and the Son written by Donald Kingsbury and published by . This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time is the late 1980s. Once again the Russians have shaken the Americans with a space spectacular-one that far outstrips the launching of Sputnik in 1958. This time they have secretly lofted a full-scale space station that dwarfs the one the U.S. hopes to build in the '90s.The American response-as it was in the late 1950s-is a crash program to overtake and surpass the Soviet effort. And by 2010 their efforts have succeeded. Burgeoning space industry has resulted in an economic boom unprecedented in U.S. history-and man will never again be confined to Earth. But it is the people behind the U.S. space program that make it succeed-and that make THE MOON GODDESS AND THE SON so memorable."Man's journey to the stars will be no mere historical abstraction: it will take many specific steps by individual men and women. The key stepping-stone is Kingsbury's own invention, and a mind-boggler it is: as grandiose and daring as a transcontinental railroad might have seemed to the Mayflower crew-and just as possible."- Stanley Schmidt, editor, Analog"I admit with some envy that Kingsbury's epic reminds me of Michener's Space. The theme is similar: that talented cadre of hardnoses we follow to new frontiers, literally to new worlds. But Kingsbury's people remind me more of some I've met in our push to space: raffish, impatient, wonderfully human-and grasping for the superhuman."-Dean Ing, author of Mutual Assured Survival and The Future of Flight
