Book Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands

Download or read book Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands: A Summer Resort for Pleasure Seekers The most attractive portion of the St. Lawrence is that which includes the so-called Thousand Islands, numbering in reality about 1800. The following extract from Weld's journal of 1799 is one of the earliest known descriptions of these islands, and cannot easily be improved. "About 8 o'clock the next, and eighth morning of our voyage, we entered the last lake before you come to that of Ontario, called the Lake of a Thousand Islands, on account of the multiplicity of them which it contains. Many of these islands are scarcely larger than a bateau, and none of them, except such as are situated at the upper and lower extremities of the lake, appeared to me to contain more than fifteen English acres each. They are all covered with wood, even to the very smallest. The trees on these last are stunted in their growth, but the larger islands produce as fine timber as is to be found on the main shores of the lake. Many of these islands are situated so closely together that it would be easy to throw a pebble from one to the other, notwithstanding which circumstance the passage between them is perfectly safe and commodious for bateaux, and between some of them that are even thus close to each other is water sufficient for a frigate. The water is uncommonly clear as it is in every part of the river, from Lake St. Francis upwards; between that lake and the Utawas river downwards it is discolored, as I have before observed, by passing over beds of marl. The shores of all these islands under our notice are rocky; most of them rise very boldly, and some exhibit perpendicular masses of rock towards the water, upwards of twenty feet high. The scenery presented to view in sailing between these islands is beautiful in the highest degree. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Los Angeles as a Summer Resort 1902 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Los Angeles as a Summer Resort 1902 Classic Reprint written by Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Los Angeles as a Summer Resort, 1902 Delightful climate, yes, but how terribly hot it must be in summer. Such is a remark often heard from visitors who come to take refuge in Southern California from the rigors of an Eastern winter. It is not surprising that strangers who find the climate of an Eastern May at inidwinter should suppose that the climate of July must necessarily be insufferable. Such, however, is far from being the case. The summer climate of Los Angeles, and of that section of Southern California within about thirty miles of the coast, is delightful. This is due, partly, to the fact that our ocean cur rent comes from the north, not from the south, as on the Atlantic coast, and also to the fact that the superheated air on the great deserts east of Southern California rises with the sun, and lets in a cool current from the ocean. This sea breeze sets in daily, at about eleven o'clock. At night there is a reversal of the process, a land breeze blowing out to the ocean. It appears as if nature had selected Southern California to show what she could do at her best, in the shape of a climate that approaches so near to perfection as to leave scarcely a loophole for captious criticism, except on part of those few unfortunate individuals whose livers are so badly out'of order that they suc ceed in finding something to complain of wherever they may be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appleton's: Illustrated Hand-Book of American Summer Resorts The main object that has been kept in view in the preparation of this "Hand-Book of American Summer Resorts" has been, to combine fullness and precision of information with the utmost attainable economy of space, and to present the information in such a manner as to secure the greatest possible facility of consultation. Its comparative smallness of dimension and consequent economy of price have been secured, not by omitting material facts, but by studiously excluding all superfluous and unimportant matter, and by a rigid condensation of style. It is not claimed, however, that the Hand-Book includes all the places which may be considered summer resorts. There is scarcely a village or hamlet in the New England and Middle States, twenty miles distant from a city, that is not more or less visited in summer, and to this extent a "summer resort." To describe them all would be to make a gazetteer rather than a tourist's guide, and it has not been, attempted; but the Editor believes that he has included all the resorts which have made good their claim to popular attention. In order to make the book easy to consult and as helpful as possible, a general arrangement has been adopted which of itself suffices to indicate the relative attractiveness or prominence of the objects and places that are grouped under one head; and with the same purpose in view, the object or place described is distinguished from the description of it and from the rest of the text, by putting it either in italics or in black letters. No mention is made of anything which is not thought worth the traveler's attention; but there are degrees of attractiveness even among noteworthy things, and this it is attempted to indicate by the relative typographical prominence accorded them. The objects and places whose names are printed in black letters are thus a selection from a selection; or, to put it dogmatically, they indicate what must be seen as distinguished from what may be seen when time and disposition are propitious. Much care has been taken to make the Hand-Book accurate and fully up to date in its information; but in dealing with so many and diverse facts it is probable that some errors have crept in, and that there are some omissions. The book will be kept standing in type and subjected to a thorough annual revision, and the Editor will be grateful for any corrections or suggestions. Communications should be addressed to the Editor of Appletons' Hand-Book of American Summer Resorts, care of D. Appleton & Co., New York.
