Download or read book A Summer of Hummingbirds written by Christopher Benfey and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The country's most noted writers, poets, and artists converge at a singular moment in American life, a great companion to fans of the film A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson. At the close of the Civil War, the lives of Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Martin Johnson Heade intersected in an intricate map of friendship, family, and romance that marked a milestone in the development of American art and literature. Using the image of a flitting hummingbird as a metaphor for the gossamer strands that connect these larger-than-life personalities, Christopher Benfey re-creates the summer of 1882, the summer when Mabel Louise Todd-the protégé to the painter Heade-confesses her love for Emily Dickinson's brother, Austin, and the players suddenly find themselves caught in the crossfire between the Calvinist world of decorum, restraint, and judgment and a new, unconventional world in which nature prevails and freedom is all.
Download or read book Summer of Marv written by Josh Muggins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summer 1975. Gerald Ford lurches through the White House. John Denver rules the airwaves. Meanwhile, back in Katoland, all real men grow Fu Manchus, as does Josh's live-in masseuse. Buncha white guys mostly sit around talkin' and abusin' their cortexes in John Muggins' droll, genial rumination of the year he merrily failed his way out of a Minnesota college. Muggins restores to mindless male debauchery all the joy that more reflective memoirists have stripped from it, and in the process concocts a timeless, fizzy valentine to squandering one's youth on drugs and alcohol and unattainable women, and not regretting a minute of it. - Back cover.

Download or read book Maintaining Stable Friendships written by David A. Cichocki and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other investigators have surmised that different types of relationships use diverse maintenance strategies in order to keep the relationship in existence. This study examines relational maintenance strategies that people use specifically in the relationship known as friendship. Five adult friendship couples were interviewed for maintenance strategies they use to sustain their friendship. The discussions were recorded and transcribed. The Constant Comparison method was used to compare and contrast the data in order to discover strategies unique to friendships. Results revealed seven strategies including Openness; Approach to Conflict; Identification; Admiration; Togetherness; and Sense of Continuance. These friendship strategies are uniquely utilized, and therefore distinctive, to the relationship. This may be due to the way people are socialized in our society.
Download or read book Soft Landing written by Andrew R. Thomas and published by Apress. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft Landing: Airline Industry Strategy, Service, and Safety covers the immediate past, present, and future of the airline industry and its effects on consumers and the economy. Aviation receives a disproportionate amount of news coverage in the popular press—not to mention chatter at cocktail parties and workplaces around the world. And why not? Aviation represents a sector of the U.S economy, for example, exceeded in size only by the real estate, healthcare, and automotive industries. Furthermore, hundreds of millions of people fly each year, including 80 million Americans. So we all have airline stories—experiencing a delay and losing a business deal, spending a night or three in the airport, dealing with ornery airline personnel, losing money on airline stocks, or being involved in a near miss. (Or, as George Carlin more accurately put it, a “near hit.”) But things might be on the upswing. Knocked to its knees by 9/11 and a decade of falling revenue and rising losses, the industry’s “flying cheap” strategy and organizational efficiencies based partly on outsourcing have appear to have helped passengers and profitability return. As this book explains, we can look forward to better technology and infrastructure, speedier—and easier—travel, more effective and less invasive security measures, and more jobs in the air and on the ground. Turbulence is always a possibility. Rising fuel costs, economic uncertainty, and future terror attacks could cause tumult once again. Plus, airline companies intend to charge us extra for everything from the weight of our own bodies to use of the bathroom. But as the industry has discovered, we’ll put up with that—and more—if we can make it to our destinations with bags intact and a smaller dent in our wallets. Soft Landing will: Sort out the promise and perils facing the airlines Analyze and articulate the potential impact of changes in the aviation industry on passengers, airports, governments, the global economy, and the airlines themselves Give airline passengers worldwide an idea of what’s ahead when it comes to airline service, security, and technology
