Book Preserving on Paper

Download or read book Preserving on Paper written by Kristine Kowalchuk and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apricot wine and stewed calf’s head, melancholy medicine and "ointment of roses." Welcome to the cookbook Shakespeare would have recognized. Preserving on Paper is a critical edition of three seventeenth-century receipt books–handwritten manuals that included a combination of culinary recipes, medical remedies, and household tips which documented the work of women at home. Kristine Kowalchuk argues that receipt books served as a form of folk writing, where knowledge was shared and passed between generations. These texts played an important role in the history of women’s writing and literacy and contributed greatly to issues of authorship, authority, and book history. Kowalchuk’s revelatory interdisciplinary study offers unique insights into early modern women’s writings and the original sharing economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the blockade of Southern ports and the lack of trading between the North and South during the Civil War, the Confederacy found itself in great deprivation, lacking its customary supplies. Showing great resourcefulness, southerners developed new ways to feed and clothe themselves and these adaptations and recipes were pulled together in 1863 by Richmond publishers West & Johnson, to share throughout the region in Confederate Receipt Book. The recipes were assembled from newspapers, staff, and other sources and were “designed to supply useful and economical directions and suggestions of cookery, housewifery, and for the camp.” Examples of resourceful recipes in Confederate Receipt Book include apple pie without apples, artificial oysters, and coffee substitutes as well as medicinal remedies for headaches, croup, and sore throats and making household items like candles and soap. The nature and extent of the items highlight the degree of difficulty that the Confederates faced and their ability to acclimate to the supplies at hand. Other examples include recipes for making ink, wicks for lamps, fire balls for fuel, and bread from numerous types of flours. The Confederate Receipt Book has as much quaint and amusing charm to present-day readers as it had practical significance to the beleaguered South fighting for its independence. This edition of Confederate Receipt Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.

Book Lady Fanshawe s Receipt Book

Download or read book Lady Fanshawe s Receipt Book written by Lucy Moore and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fascinating... A vivid account' - Philippa Gregory, The Times 'Moore's prose is witty. Her book is full of arresting detail and thoughtful comment' - Sunday Times 'An enchanting, idiosyncratic Tardis of a book, peppered with good humour' - Daily Telegraph In the mid seventeenth century, England was divided by war and bloodshed. Torn apart by rival factions, father opposed son and brother met brother on the battlefield. But while civil war raged on cobbled streets and green fields, inside the home domestic life continued as it always had done. For Ann Fanshawe and her children it meant a life of insecurity and constant jeopardy as she and her husband, a Royalist diplomat, dedicated their lives to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy. In this uncertain world, Ann's 'receipt book' was a treasured and entirely feminine response to the upheavals of war. These books were a feature of women's lives during this period, when there were few doctors to be found, and were full of life-saving medical knowledge that had been gleaned from mothers and friends. Remarkably, Ann's morocco-bound book full of scraps of ink-stained paper has survived to this day. Using Ann's receipt book and the memoirs she wrote for her surviving son, Lucy Moore follows her through this turbulent time as she leaves home, marries, bears - and buries - children and seeks to hold her family together. Lady Fanshawe's Receipt Book brilliantly brings to life Ann's struggles and her joys, revealing how ordinary women across the country fought to protect their loved ones in the face of conflict.

Book A Colonial Plantation Cookbook

Download or read book A Colonial Plantation Cookbook written by Richard J. Hooker and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A charming compilation of eighteenth-century recipes . . . a well-researched account of Mrs. Horry’s fascinating life-style.” —The North Carolina Historical Review Harriott Pinckney Horry began her receipt book more than two hundred years ago. It is being published now for the first time. You will get a lively sense of what colonial plantation life was like from reading Harriott’s receipt book. She began it in 1770, shortly after she was married, writing recipes and household information in a notebook. Her recipes reflect both English and French culinary traditions. You will recognize in the recipes the origins of some of your contemporary favorites. Harriott writes also about keeping the dairy and smokehouse, how to dye clothes, what to do about insects, how to care for trees and crops, and how to make soap, all skills she learned in the course of managing the plantation after her husband’s early death. From Harriott’s writing and Hooker’s knowledgeable introduction and editorial notes, you will learn what it was like to be well-to-do and a member of Southern aristocracy, living in a world of rice and indigo planters, merchants, lawyers, and politicians—the colonial elite. Because knowing about food preferences and eating habits of any people expands our understanding of their nature and times, the receipt book of Harriott Pinckney Horry opens another window on the history of colonial plantations. “Gives us a very good idea of the household’s prize dishes.” —The Washington Post “Cookbook collectors will love it and even readers who don’t enter the kitchen will find it entertaining.” —The Charleston Evening Post

Book Results Not Receipts

Download or read book Results Not Receipts written by Charles Kenny and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the invasion of Afghanistan, the U.S. Agency for International Development supported the Afghan Ministry of Public Health to deliver basic healthcare to 90 percent of the population, at a cost of $4.50 a head. The program played a vital role in improving the country's health; the number of children dying before the age of five dropped by 100,000 a year. But accounting standards at the Ministry of Public Health concerned the United States Special Investigator General for Afghanistan. There was no evidence of malfeasance, nor argument about the success of the program. For all that the results were fantastic, receipts were not in order. The investigator called for the health program to be suspended because of "financial management deficiencies" at the ministry. This case illustrates a growing problem: an important and justified focus on corruption as a barrier to development has led to policy change in aid agencies that is damaging the potential for aid to deliver results. Donors have treated corruption as an issue they can measure and improve, and from which they can insulate their projects at acceptable costs by controlling processes and monitoring receipts. Results Not Receipts highlights the weak link between donors’ preferred measures of corruption and development outcomes related to our limited ability to measure the problem. It discusses the costs of the standard anti-corruption tools of fiduciary controls and centralized delivery, and it suggests a different approach to tackling the problem of corruption in development: focus on outcomes.
