Book Finding Freedom

Download or read book Finding Freedom written by Erin French and published by Celadon Books. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **New York Times Bestseller** From Erin French, owner of the critically acclaimed The Lost Kitchen, a TIME world dining destination, a life-affirming memoir about survival, renewal, and finding a community to lift her up Long before The Lost Kitchen became a world dining destination with every seating filled the day the reservation book opens each spring, Erin French was a girl roaming barefoot on a 25-acre farm, a teenager falling in love with food while working the line at her dad’s diner and a young woman finding her calling as a professional chef at her tiny restaurant tucked into a 19th century mill. This singular memoir—a classic American story—invites readers to Erin's corner of her beloved Maine to share the real person behind the “girl from Freedom” fairytale, and the not-so-picture-perfect struggles that have taken every ounce of her strength to overcome, and that make Erin’s life triumphant. In Finding Freedom, Erin opens up to the challenges, stumbles, and victories that have led her to the exact place she was ever meant to be, telling stories of multiple rock-bottoms, of darkness and anxiety, of survival as a jobless single mother, of pills that promised release but delivered addiction, of a man who seemed to offer salvation but in the end ripped away her very sense of self. And of the beautiful son who was her guiding light as she slowly rebuilt her personal and culinary life around the solace she found in food—as a source of comfort, a sense of place, as a way of bringing goodness into the world. Erin’s experiences with deep loss and abiding hope, told with both honesty and humor, will resonate with women everywhere who are determined to find their voices, create community, grow stronger and discover their best-selves despite seemingly impossible odds. Set against the backdrop of rural Maine and its lushly intense, bountiful seasons, Erin reveals the passion and courage needed to invent oneself anew, and the poignant, timeless connections between food and generosity, renewal and freedom.

Book Miss Me with That

Download or read book Miss Me with That written by Rachel Lindsay and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A candid, witty, and inspiring collection of essays from The Bachelor’s first Black Bachelorette, exploring everything from relationships and love to politics and race “The Bachelor gave me an opportunity, but I created my own happy ending.” Rachel Lindsay rose to prominence as The Bachelor’s first Black Bachelorette and has since become one of the franchise’s most well-known figures—and outspoken critics. But there has always been more to Lindsay than meets the eye, and in this book, she finally tells her own story, in her own words. In wide-ranging essays, Lindsay opens up about her experience on ABC’s hit show and reveals everything about her life off-camera, from a childhood growing up in Dallas, Texas, as the daughter of a U.S. District Judge, to her disastrous dating life prior to appearing on The Bachelor, to her career in law, and the decision to become a reality-TV contestant. She also brings a sharp wit and keen intellect to weigh in on issues such as the lack of diversity in reality television and the importance of political engagement, protest, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Told in the down-to-earth, no-nonsense voice she’s become known for, Lindsay’s book of essays provides an intimate look at the life of one of reality TV’s most beloved stars, as well as advice and inspiration that will make her a role model for anyone who has ever struggled to find their way in love and life. As she says, “Contrary to popular belief, the best gift I ever received was not a wedding ring. It was the permission I gave myself to be imperfect.” And if you don’t believe her, you know the saying: Miss me with that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War was just days old when the first enslaved men, women, and children began fleeing their plantations to seek refuge inside the lines of the Union army as it moved deep into the heart of the Confederacy. In the years that followed, hundreds of thousands more followed in a mass exodus from slavery that would destroy the system once and for all. Drawing on an extraordinary survey of slave refugee camps throughout the country, Embattled Freedom reveals as never before the everyday experiences of these refugees from slavery as they made their way through the vast landscape of army-supervised camps that emerged during the war. Amy Murrell Taylor vividly reconstructs the human world of wartime emancipation, taking readers inside military-issued tents and makeshift towns, through commissary warehouses and active combat, and into the realities of individuals and families struggling to survive physically as well as spiritually. Narrating their journeys in and out of the confines of the camps, Taylor shows in often gripping detail how the most basic necessities of life were elemental to a former slave's quest for freedom and full citizenship. The stories of individuals--storekeepers, a laundress, and a minister among them--anchor this ambitious and wide-ranging history and demonstrate with new clarity how contingent the slaves' pursuit of freedom was on the rhythms and culture of military life. Taylor brings new insight into the enormous risks taken by formerly enslaved people to find freedom in the midst of the nation's most destructive war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I loved the afternoon shift at my father’s diner. I loved the peace and quiet of the kitchen, and I loved frying bacon and making ice cream cones. It was my chance to take a break. #2 I remember the first time I went to the diner. I was five. My mother took me and my sister there to visit our father, who had just started working there. We were amazed by the diner’s interior. #3 I was in awe at the sight of my father, the man I had missed so much, standing in front of a giant stainless griddle, flipping pancakes. He had a big smile on his face and was whistling happily. #4 I was 12 years old when my dad first pulled me onto the line. I had stepped in to help him out at the diner, mostly because I needed the cash to buy that bike. I had learned every basic kitchen skill a cook would need to know: how to cook a burger medium-rare, how to roast a chicken, and how to extract every bit of meat from the carcass.

Book Finding Freedom in God s Promises

Download or read book Finding Freedom in God s Promises written by Beth Gable Hicks and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After I wrote my last book, The Importance of Christian Friendships: In Good Times and in Bad, I began to think about how many of the attributes of Christian friendships are grounded in faith. This is the same faith that leads us to believe in God’s promises. I don’t know if you have ever tried to count how many promises there are in the Bible; they are almost impossible to numerate! Yet that did not dissuade me. I began to turn to the Bible and meditate on some of the more significant promises. Then I began to ask myself how my life would be different if I truly believed God’s promises? What if we all believed God’s promises and acted accordingly? I am convinced that if we have faith and believe in God’s holy nature, we can then accept that He is who He says He is. It is then just a short step to knowing that He will do what He says He will do, and we can trust in His promises. God’s promises are very precious. Not only do they remind us of His personal interest in our lives, but they provide us with hope and encouragement. I would also contend that accepting His promises turns religion from something that seems restrictive to something that is truly liberating. As you will read in the book, we can find freedom in God’s promises. We can find freedom from condemnation, freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom from hopelessness, freedom from grief, and freedom from worry, just to name a few. I hope the reader will find renewed encouragement from this book and new faith in a faithful God.
