Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.

Book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Download or read book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Book Enterprise Isolation Programs in Transition Economies

Download or read book Enterprise Isolation Programs in Transition Economies written by Simeon Djankov and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I provide the first comprehensive analysis of isolation programs for financially distressed firms in transition economies. The study is based on empirical evidence from the Romanian program. The results indicate that the isolation program did not deliver any tangible improvements in operational performance, nor did it enhance the process of privatization or liquidation of large loss-making enterprises. I also show that firms included in the program faced softer budget constraints than their comparators outside the program. These findings question the feasibility of creating special programs for enterprise restructuring and privatization under government auspices.

Book WHO UNAIDS Guidelines for Standard HIV Isolation and Characterization Procedures

Download or read book WHO UNAIDS Guidelines for Standard HIV Isolation and Characterization Procedures written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2002 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is characterized by extremely high variability resulting in the emergence of widely divergent viral strains in diverse geographical locations and different populations. HIV strains can also vary significantly with regard to their biological and immunological properties, which may have important implications for clinical aspects of HIV infection, diagnostics, treatment, and the development of effective HIV vaccines. It is therefore important to develop appropriate laboratory technologies and capacities for systematic collection and detailed characterization of globally prevalent HIV-1 strains. This second edition contains the latest information and recommendations with regard to standard procedures for HIV isolation and its genetic, biological, and immunological characterization with a special emphasis on their applicability in HIV vaccine-related research. The laboratory methods described in these guidelines were intensively validated through various collaborative studies conducted in the framework of the WHO-UNAIDS Network for HIV Isolation and Characterization.

Book Analysis of RCC Structure Based on Racking Walls Base Isolation

Download or read book Analysis of RCC Structure Based on Racking Walls Base Isolation written by Dr. Ashad ullah Qureshi and published by Concepts Books Publication. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years considerable attention has been paid to research and development of structural control devices with particular emphasis on mitigation of wind and seismic response of buildings. Many vibration-control measures like passive, active, semi-active and hybrid vibration control methods have been developed. Passive vibration control keeps the building to remain essentially elastic during large earthquakes and has fundamental frequency lower than both its fixed base frequency and the dominant frequencies of ground motion. Base isolation is a passive vibration control system.

Book Evidence Based Practice for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response

Download or read book Evidence Based Practice for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-11-28 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When communities face complex public health emergencies, state local, tribal, and territorial public health agencies must make difficult decisions regarding how to effectively respond. The public health emergency preparedness and response (PHEPR) system, with its multifaceted mission to prevent, protect against, quickly respond to, and recover from public health emergencies, is inherently complex and encompasses policies, organizations, and programs. Since the events of September 11, 2001, the United States has invested billions of dollars and immeasurable amounts of human capital to develop and enhance public health emergency preparedness and infrastructure to respond to a wide range of public health threats, including infectious diseases, natural disasters, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear events. Despite the investments in research and the growing body of empirical literature on a range of preparedness and response capabilities and functions, there has been no national-level, comprehensive review and grading of evidence for public health emergency preparedness and response practices comparable to those utilized in medicine and other public health fields. Evidence-Based Practice for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response reviews the state of the evidence on PHEPR practices and the improvements necessary to move the field forward and to strengthen the PHEPR system. This publication evaluates PHEPR evidence to understand the balance of benefits and harms of PHEPR practices, with a focus on four main areas of PHEPR: engagement with and training of community-based partners to improve the outcomes of at-risk populations after public health emergencies; activation of a public health emergency operations center; communication of public health alerts and guidance to technical audiences during a public health emergency; and implementation of quarantine to reduce the spread of contagious illness.
