Book excerpt: Our colleagues from the French-speaking parts of Switzerland - the Suisses romands - and above all the committee of the 3rd Cycle, e Earth Sciences (3 Cycle, Sciences de la Terre) honored us by asking us to give a course on Isotope Geology for the year 1977. The course, entitled Evaluation et Interpretation des Donnees Isotopiques (eval uation and Interpretation of Isotopic Data), was intended to inform earth scientists, graduate and postgraduate, from the western Swiss Universities on the subject of Isotope Geology. Such courses usually consist of two parts: lectures and excursions. Thus, in March 1977, we gave such a two-week course at the Miner alogical Institute of the University of Berne. The first week was devoted essentially to the methods of dating, the second week to the behavior of stable isotopes. In July 1977, on the occasion of an excursion to the Central and Western Alps, we were able to demonstrate our results. Guest professors were invited to make contributions to the course.

Book excerpt: Geochemical Studies is a collection of papers dealing with ore petrology, particularly on the genesis of ores found in sediments. One paper describes the minor elements in metal deposits in sedimentary rocks, focusing on geochemical work on certain classes of ores in sediments and on the theories of origin of the deposits. With better techniques of microprobe analysis of trace elements, the paper notes that ore deposits in sedimentary rocks can be characterized by their minor element suites. One paper points out that large ore deposits cannot possibly be formed by a migration of substances (known as "negative" diffusion). The paper estimates that the quantities of material that can be accumulated in a sediment horizon with a great affinity for these materials, say in a period of one billion years, will still not be sufficient to produce a large ore deposit. The paper estimates the necessary diffusion coefficients that occur in deep structures, where increased mobilities of various substances occur. Geologists, geochemists, and engineers working with fossil fuels will find the collection highly significant.

Because the field of stable isotopes is still grow ing and exerting an increasing influence on geosciences in general, it seems to be necessary, after a further 7 years, to revise the edition again accordingly. Not only has the previous edition been updated, but two completely new chapters on the isotopic composi tion of mantle-derived material and on the isotopic composition of the ocean during the geologie past, have been added. The references concentrate on re cent literature. In some cases, older references have been omitted to save space. I do not intend to underrate the value of older publications, but only to keep the reference list - al ready very voluminous in relation to the totallengt- from becoming even larger. An early draft has been reviewed by Russell Harmon and Alan Matthews. John Valley has se nt me a preprint of an artic1e on metamorphie rocks. To all three of them I owe my deepest thanks.

In teaching geochemistry, I realized that the best examples for many chemical processes are drawn from the study of ore deposits. Consequently, we initiated a course at The University of Cincinnati entitled "Sedimentary Ore Deposits," which serves as the final quarter course for both our sedimentary petrology and our ore deposits sequence, and this book is based on that teaching experience. Because of my orientation, the treatment given is perhaps more sedimentological than is usually found in books on ore deposits, but I hope that this proves to be an advantage. It will also be obvious that I have drawn heavily on the ideas and techniques of Robert Garrels. A number of people have helped with the creation of this book. I am especially grateful to my students and colleagues at Cincinnati and The Memorial University of Newfoundland for suffering through preliminary versions in my courses. In the meantime the number of measurements and publi cations has increased enormously. Therefore, it seems necessary to summarize the knowledge in this field in the light of more recent developments. The title of this book was chosen because the whole field of radio active isotope geochemistry has been deliberately omitted. The book is divided into three parts. Section A gives the theory of isotope effects and the technical background, both aspects being discussed rather briefly. The author regrets some shortcomings in the introductory section, especially in the theoretical treatment of isotope fractionation, but he has been trained mainly in earth sciences rather than in physical chemistry. Section B gives a summary of the fractionation mechanisms affecting the most important elements - hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and sulfur. Further, it surveys some other elements that have not yet been as thoroughly investigated. Section C surveys the most important results from a geological stand point. In some cases the opinions of different authors on the same sub ject are summarized without comment, because the field of stable isotope geology is growing so rapidly that a final answer cannot be given at the moment. It is obvious that in writing this book, which is of the survey type, the author could not rely only on his own experiments and experience.
