Book excerpt: Sulfur in Proteins is a collection of papers presented at the 1958 Symposium on Sulfur in Proteins, held in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The symposium primary aims to explore the varied and unusual roles of –S–S– and –SH groups in proteins. This book is organized into eight chapters that cover a wide variety of proteins, including serum, iron, copper, and muscle proteins, as well as enzymes and viruses. The opening chapter describes the various protein reactions involving sulfur, emphasizing the chemical modification of thiol and disulfide groups. Considerable chapters are devoted to the chemical properties, biogenesis, reactivity, and oxygenation of specific proteins. A chapter highlights some aspects of protein structure in relation to the role of –S–S– and –SH groups in enzymic catalysis. This chapter also describes the properties of sulfhydryl groups in yeast alcohol dehydrogenase. The final chapters examine the role of sulfur groups in several virus proteins and in cell division. This work will be of great value to protein scientists and researchers.

Book The Chemical Biology of Sulfur

Download or read book The Chemical Biology of Sulfur written by Christopher T Walsh and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to provide an in-depth view of the complete biochemistry of sulfur with an emphasis on aspects not covered elsewhere. Given its role in the formation of proteins and presence in the amino acids methionine and cysteine, sulfur is essential to life. Current literature on the biochemistry of sulfur is vast and widely dispersed, as such this volume is intended as a single-source for everything concerning sulfur biochemistry from metabolic roles of inorganic sulfur, to thiol and thioether chemical biology, to the university of cysteine chemistry in proteomes. Authored by a renowned biochemist and experienced writer and educator, this book is ideal for students and researchers in biochemistry, biology and the life sciences with an interest in sulfur and its role in life.

Book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology written by Tracey Rouault and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on iron-sulfur proteins includes chapters that describe the initial discovery of iron-sulfur proteins in the 1960s to elucidation of the roles of iron sulfur clusters as prosthetic groups of enzymes, such as the citric acid cycle enzyme, aconitase, and numerous other proteins, ranging from nitrogenase to DNA repair proteins. The capacity of iron sulfur clusters to accept and delocalize single electrons is explained by basic chemical principles, which illustrate why iron sulfur proteins are uniquely suitable for electron transport and other activities. Techniques used for detection and stabilization of iron-sulfur clusters, including EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, are discussed because they are important for characterizing unrecognized and elusive iron sulfur proteins. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures. Numerous chapters discuss how microbes, plants, and animals synthesize these complex prosthetic groups, and why it is important to understand the chemistry and biogenesis of iron sulfur proteins. In addition to their vital importance in mitochondrial respiration, numerous iron sulfur proteins are important in maintenance of DNA integrity. Multiple rare human diseases with different clinical presentations are caused by mutations of genes in the iron sulfur cluster biogenesis pathway. Understanding iron sulfur proteins is important for understanding a rapidly expanding group of metabolic pathways important in all kingdoms of life, and for understanding processes ranging from nitrogen fixation to human disease.

Book excerpt: The Proteins, Volume III, Third Edition deals with the structure of proteins in terms of composition, amino acid sequence, and three-dimensional conformation. Special consideration is given to sulfur and the sulfur-containing amino acids because of their unique contribution to the structure and reactivity of certain proteins. The book reviews the strategies and procedures for determining the amino acid sequence of a protein. The "spinning-cup" sequenator method of Edman and Begg; the role of sulfur in proteins; and the three-dimensional structure of some crystalline proteins by X-ray diffraction analysis are covered as well. Protein chemists, medical and biological researchers, and students who require more knowledge of protein chemistry will find the book extremely useful.
