These techniques introduce new concepts from image analysis that greatly improve the performance of the coding schemes for very high compression. This interest has been further emphasized by the future MPEG 4 standard. Second generation image and video coding techniques are the ensemble of approaches proposing new and more efficient image representations than the conventional canonical form. As a consequence, the human visual system becomes a fundamental part of the encoding/decoding chain. More insight to distinguish between first and second generation can be gained if it is noticed that image and video coding is basically carried out in two steps. First, image data are converted into a sequence of messages and, second, code words are assigned to the messages. Methods of the first generation put the emphasis on the second step, whereas methods of the second generation put it on the first step and use available results for the second step. As a result of including the human visual system, second generation can be also seen as an approach of seeing the image composed by different entities called objects. This implies that the image or sequence of images have first to be analyzed and/or segmented in order to find the entities. It is in this context that we have selected in this book three main approaches as second generation video coding techniques: Segmentation-based schemes Model Based Schemes Fractal Based Schemes £/LIST£ Video Coding: The Second Generation Approach is an important introduction to the new coding techniques for video. Book excerpt: Le problème du suivi d’objets dans une vidéo se pose dans des domaines tels que la vision par ordinateur (vidéosurveillance par exemple) et la post-production télévisuelle et cinématographique (effets spéciaux). Il se décline en deux variantes principales : le suivi d’une région d’intérêt, qui désigne un suivi grossier d’objet, et la segmentation spatiotemporelle, qui correspond à un suivi précis des contours de l’objet d’intérêt. Dans les deux cas, la région ou l’objet d’intérêt doivent avoir été préalablement détourés sur la première, et éventuellement la dernière, image de la séquence vidéo. Nous proposons dans cette thèse une méthode pour chacun de ces types de suivi ainsi qu’une implémentation rapide tirant partie du Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) d’une méthode de suivi de régions d’intérêt développée par ailleurs. La première méthode repose sur l’analyse de trajectoires temporelles de points saillants et réalise un suivi de régions d’intérêt. Des points saillants (typiquement des lieux de forte courbure des lignes isointensité) sont détectés dans toutes les images de la séquence. Les trajectoires sont construites en liant les points des images successives dont les voisinages sont cohérents. Notre contribution réside premièrement dans l’analyse des trajectoires sur un groupe d’images, ce qui améliore la qualité d’estimation du mouvement. De plus, nous utilisons une pondération spatio-temporelle pour chaque trajectoire qui permet d’ajouter une contrainte temporelle sur le mouvement tout en prenant en compte les déformations géométriques locales de l’objet ignorées par un modèle de mouvement global. La seconde méthode réalise une segmentation spatio-temporelle. Elle repose sur l’estimation du mouvement du contour de l’objet en s’appuyant sur l’information contenue dans une couronne qui s’étend de part et d’autre de ce contour. Cette couronne nous renseigne sur le contraste entre le fond et l’objet dans un contexte local. C’est là notre première contribution. De plus, la mise en correspondance par une mesure de similarité statistique, à savoir l’entropie du résiduel, d’une portion de la couronne et d’une zone de l’image suivante dans la séquence permet d’améliorer le suivi tout en facilitant le choix de la taille optimale de la couronne. Enfin, nous proposons une implémentation rapide d’une méthode de suivi de régions d’intérêt existante. Cette méthode repose sur l’utilisation d’une mesure de similarité statistique : la divergence de Kullback-Leibler. Cette divergence peut être estimée dans un espace de haute dimension à l’aide de multiples calculs de distances au k-ème plus proche voisin dans cet espace. Ces calculs étant très coûteux, nous proposons une implémentation parallèle sur GPU (grâce à l’interface logiciel CUDA de NVIDIA) de la recherche exhaustive des k plus proches voisins. Nous montrons que cette implémentation permet d’accélérer le suivi des objets, jusqu’à un facteur 15 par rapport à une implémentation de cette recherche nécessitant au préalable une structuration des données.

Ce projet est labellisé par les deux pôles de compétitivité i-Trans et Véhiculedu Futur. Le travail de la thèse est mené conjointement par le laboratoire IRTESSETde l'UTBM et le laboratoire LEOST de l'IFSTTAR.L'objectif de cette thèse est de développer un système de perception permettantl'interprétation de scénarios dans l'environnement d'un passage à niveau. Il s'agitd'évaluer des situations potentiellement dangereuses par l'analyse spatio-temporelledes objets présents autour du passage à niveau.Pour atteindre cet objectif, le travail est décomposé en trois étapes principales. Lapremière étape est consacrée à la mise en place d'une architecture spatiale des capteursvidéo permettant de couvrir de manière optimale l'environnement du passageà niveau. Cette étape est mise en oeuvre dans le cadre du développement d'unsimulateur d'aide à la sécurité aux passages à niveau en utilisant un système deperception multi-vues. Dans ce cadre, nous avons proposé une méthode d'optimisationpermettant de déterminer automatiquement la position et l'orientation descaméras par rapport à l'environnement à percevoir.La deuxième étape consisteà développer une méthode robuste de suivi d'objets enmouvement à partir d'une séquence d'images. Dans un premier temps, nous avonsproposé une technique permettant la détection et la séparation des objets. Le processusde suivi est ensuite mis en oeuvre par le calcul et la rectification du flotoptique grâce respectivement à un modèle gaussien et un modèle de filtre de Kalman.La dernière étape est destinée à l'analyse des trajectoires 2D reconstruites parl'étape précédente pour l'interprétation de scénarios. Cette analyse commence parune modélisation markovienne des trajectoires 2D. Un système de décision à basede théorie de l'évidence est ensuite proposé pour l'évaluation de scénarios, aprèsavoir modélisé les sources de danger.L'approche proposée a été testée et évaluée avec des données issues de campagnesexpérimentales effectuées sur site réel d'un passage à niveau mis à disposition parRFF.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in Second Generation Image and Video Coding Techniques. These techniques introduce new concepts from image analysis that greatly improve the performance of the coding schemes for very high compression. This interest has been further emphasized by the future MPEG 4 standard. Second generation image and video coding techniques are the ensemble of approaches proposing new and more efficient image representations than the conventional canonical form. As a consequence, the human visual system becomes a fundamental part of the encoding/decoding chain. More insight to distinguish between first and second generation can be gained if it is noticed that image and video coding is basically carried out in two steps. First, image data are converted into a sequence of messages and, second, code words are assigned to the messages. Methods of the first generation put the emphasis on the second step, whereas methods of the second generation put it on the first step and use available results for the second step. As a result of including the human visual system, second generation can be also seen as an approach of seeing the image composed by different entities called objects. This implies that the image or sequence of images have first to be analyzed and/or segmented in order to find the entities. It is in this context that we have selected in this book three main approaches as second generation video coding techniques: Segmentation-based schemes Model Based Schemes Fractal Based Schemes £/LIST£ Video Coding: The Second Generation Approach is an important introduction to the new coding techniques for video. As such, all researchers, students and practitioners working in image processing will find this book of interest.

Image sequences can be acquired, for instance, by video, motion picture, X-ray, or acoustic cameras, or they can be synthetically gen erated by sequentially ordering 2-D still images as in computer graphics and animation. The use of image sequences in areas such as entertainment, visual communications, multimedia, education, medicine, surveillance, remote control, and scientific research is constantly growing as the use of television and video systems are becoming more and more common. The boosted interest in digital video for both consumer and professional products, along with the availability of fast processors and memory at reasonable costs, has been a major driving force behind this growth. Before we elaborate on the two major terms that appear in the title of this book, namely motion analysis and image sequence processing, we like to place them in their proper contexts within the range of possible operations that involve image sequences. In this book, we choose to classify these operations into three major categories, namely (i) image sequence processing, (ii) image sequence analysis, and (iii) visualization. The interrelationship among these three categories is pictorially described in Figure 1 below in the form of an "image sequence triangle".
