Download or read book The Hidden History of American Oligarchy written by Thom Hartmann and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thom Hartmann, the most popular progressive radio host in America and a New York Times bestselling author, looks at the history of the battle against oligarchy in America—and how we can win the latest round. Billionaire oligarchs want to own our republic, and they're nearly there thanks to legislation and Supreme Court decisions that they have essentially bought. They put Trump and his political allies into office and support a vast network of think tanks, publications, and social media that every day push our nation closer and closer to police-state tyranny. The United States was born in a struggle against the oligarchs of the British aristocracy, and ever since then the history of America has been one of dynamic tension between democracy and oligarchy. And much like the shock of the 1929 crash woke America up to glaring inequality and the ongoing theft of democracy by that generation's oligarchs, the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has laid bare how extensively oligarchs have looted our nation's economic system, gutted governmental institutions, and stolen the wealth of the former middle class. Thom Hartmann traces the history of this struggle against oligarchy from America's founding to the United States' war with the feudal Confederacy to President Franklin Roosevelt's struggle against “economic royalists,” who wanted to block the New Deal. In each of those cases, the oligarchs lost the battle. But with increasing right-wing control of the media, unlimited campaign contributions, and a conservative takeover of the judicial system, we're at a crisis point. Now is the time for action, before we flip into tyranny. We've beaten the oligarchs before, and we can do it again. Hartmann lays out practical measures we can take to break up media monopolies, limit the influence of money in politics, reclaim the wealth stolen over decades by the oligarchy, and build a movement that will return control of America to We the People.
Download or read book The Hell of War Comes Home written by Owen W. Gilman Jr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owen W. Gilman Jr. stresses the US experience of war in the twenty-first century and argues that wherever and whenever there is war, there will be imaginative responses to it, especially the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since the trauma of September 11, the experience of Americans at war has been rendered honestly and fully in a wide range of texts--creative nonfiction and journalism, film, poetry, and fiction. These responses, Gilman contends, have packed a lot of power and measure up even to World War II's literature and film. Like few other books, Gilman's volume studies these new texts-- among them Kevin Powers's debut novel The Yellow Birds and Phil Klay's short stories Redeployment, along with the films The Hurt Locker, American Sniper, and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. For perspective, Gilman also looks at some touchstones from the Vietnam War. Compared to a few of the big Vietnam books and films, this new material has mostly been read and watched by small audiences and generated less discussion. Gilman exposes the circumstances in American culture currently preventing literature and film of our recent wars from making a significant impact. He contends that Americans' inclination to demand distraction limits learning from these compelling responses to war in the past decade. According to Gilman, where there should be clarity and depth of knowledge, we instead face misunderstanding and the anguish endured by veterans betrayed by war and our lack of understanding.

Download or read book Racehoss written by Albert Sample and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A timeless classic” (San Antonio Express-News), reissued with a new foreword, afterword, and ten percent more material about a black man who spent seventeen years on a brutal Texas prison plantation and underwent a remarkable transformation. First published in 1984, Racehoss: Big Emma’s Boy is Albert Race Sample’s “unforgettable” (The Dallas Morning News) tale of resilience, revelation, and redemption. Born in 1930, the mixed-race son of a hard-drinking black prostitute and a white cotton broker, Sample was raised in the Jim Crow South by an abusive mother who refused to let her son—who could pass for white—call her Mama. He watched for the police while she worked, whether as a prostitute, bootlegger, or running the best dice game in town. He loved his mother deeply but could no longer take her abuse and ran away from home at the age of twelve. In his early twenties, Sample was arrested for burglary, robbery, and robbery by assault and was sentenced to nearly twenty years in the Texas prison system in the 1950s and 60s. His light complexion made him stand out in the all-black prison plantation known as the “burnin’ hell,” where he and over four hundred prisoners picked cotton and worked the land while white shotgun-carrying guards followed on horseback. Sample earned the moniker “Racehoss” for his ability to hoe cotton faster than anyone else in his squad. A profound spiritual awakening in solitary confinement was a decisive moment for him, and he became determined to turn his life around. When he was finally released in 1972, he did just that. Though Sample was incarcerated in the twentieth century, his memoir reads like it came from the nineteenth. With new stories that had been edited out of the first edition, a foreword by Texas attorney and writer David R. Dow, and an afterword by Sample’s widow, Carol, this new edition of Racehoss: Big Emma’s Boy offers a more complete picture of this extraordinary time in America’s recent past.

This compendium tells the story of population control, government conspiracy, and most of all, brutalities of war. Many years into the future, an epic conflict floods the country within a bloodbath of endless carnage. In a pollution-ravaged, overpopulated time, the United States wages its second civil war filled with massive death machines, power armor, and catastrophic weaponry. The South Has Risen Again chronicles several years where genocidal battles slaughter millions in an attempt to save the nation's dwindling supplies of fresh water. The vanguard for the Northern Army is made up solely of conscripted-prisoner battalions that get utilized as cannon fodder more than anything else. This time line follows along as Fexter, a defiant young drug dealer, is thrown into military service, where he enters a hellish life of pain, prejudice, brotherhood, and extreme violence. Through his rough years at war, he learns harsh lessons on how to grow up, find love, and deal with the aftermath of lost friends.

Book excerpt: From the author of the Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries: The complete set of the popular series starring an ex-PI turned actor, “a hero with panache” (Kirkus Reviews). Anthony Award–winning author Linda Barnes is perhaps best known for her six-foot-tall, redheaded ex-cop and Boston-based private eye Carlotta Carlyle. But fellow Bostonian Michael Spraggue, a former private investigator who caught the acting bug, just can’t seem to leave his past career as a sleuth behind him. Blood Will Have Blood: When Michael lands a part in a new production of Dracula, it’s not just because of his acting talent. With his private-eye background, Spraggue is perfectly cast to investigate some strange goings-on in the reputedly haunted old Fens Theater, including a pitcher of Bloody Marys holding real blood. When the pranks turn lethal, Michael needs to find the killer before it is curtains for all. “Ms. Barnes and Mr. Spraggue should be around for a while.” —The New York Times Book Review Bitter Finish: Shooting on location in Boston, Michael gets an urgent call from Kate Holloway, his on-again-off-again lover and partner in a fledgling Napa Valley winery. Their winemaker has disappeared. When the police find a corpse on their property, Kate is arrested. To free his girl and save his winery, Michael will have to find a killer with a lethal case of sour grapes. “A fine job—expertly written, with an ingenious wine caper set in the Napa Valley.” —The New York Times Book Review Dead Heat: Brian Donagher, a junior senator from Massachusetts who took Washington by storm, is running for re-election—but he may soon be running for his life. He’s getting death threats, and his bodyguard asks his old pal Michael Spraggue for help in tracking down whoever is targeting the politician. The senator plans to run the Boston Marathon, so Michael will have to race to blow the whistle on a killer if Donagher wants to cross the finish line. “Like its predecessors, Dead Heat is worth reading. . . . Characterizations are well worked out, and when evil gets its comeuppance, the reader may start cheering.” —The Washington Post Cities of the Dead: Dora Levoyer, who has cooked for Michael’s aunt Mary since he was a boy, will always be family. While on vacation in New Orleans, she attends a banquet held by the finest chefs and sees a man who looks just like the husband who abandoned her years ago. Before she can confront him, he is found with a chef’s knife embedded in his heart—and Dora is suspected. Michael catches the next plane to the Big Easy—a place where the dead, like the living, have dangerous secrets. “Well written, sharply observed, logically plotted.” —The New York Times Book Review
