Though she’s sad when her best student has to quit the class, Liza is thrilled because he’s about to be released from prison. But he doesn’t enjoy his freedom for long. His dead body turns up in Liza’s rented room during a snowbound weekend with her beau. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by masters like Stephen King and William Friedkin, this bone-chilling collection confronts the grimmest edges of human experience across eight captivating stories. From sinister obsessions to brutal rituals, At Night They Whisper ventures into the recesses of skewed morality to uncover aberrant possibilities few dare depict. While the classic intrigue of ‘She’s Still with Us’ pays homage to old-school detective fiction, these largely original plots seize upon unexplored darkness. In ‘The Forty-Stone Finding,’ freedom and hope itself perish, while ‘Choking Monopoly’ investigates the warped dynamics lurking in family ties. Through stylistic flair and profound realism, author Alex J. Thomas immerses readers in creeping dread whilst also not forgetting to deliver a healthy dose of pulsating startles. If the deepest darkness seems unreal, At Night They Whisper dares all who encounter it: ‘what if...?’

Book The Sudoku Effect Universities in the Vicious Circle of Bureaucracy

Download or read book The Sudoku Effect Universities in the Vicious Circle of Bureaucracy written by Stefan Kühl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that the introduction of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) of credit points as a new accounting unit at universities has led to increased bureaucracy and the schoolmaster-style regimentation of Bachelor’s and Master’s courses. It explains how, due to the pressure of having to plan every single working hour of studying in advance, a ‘Sudoku Effect’ is created by the necessity to combine courses, exams and modules in such a way that the points ‘add up’. An unintentional side effect of the introduction of the ECTS, the Sudoku Effect has led to more classroom style teaching, an inflation of exams and fewer choices available to students. It has resulted in such complex and contradictory guidelines for the planning of the curriculum that the values attributed to the higher education reform can often only be realised if the rules for Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes are ignored, or at least stretched, in practice. The book describes how the reaction to this situation is the continuous further refinement of the complicated rules rather than their abolishment.

Book Silent Laughters Hidden Whispers

Download or read book Silent Laughters Hidden Whispers written by Premji and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Laughters, Hidden Whispers is a wonderful collection of short stories which gives a true understanding of the contemporary human psyche. It shows life as it is and makes us reflect on life as it should be. Premji has used the medium to bring out the angst in his soul, the fire to cleanse society and make better humans out of beings. Every story from this collection is captivating mainly because of his unique and inimitable style, where he is a part of every tale and weaves it around him; he takes us on a journey where we meet people, situations, and daily events seemingly so ordinary turn extraordinary, like water to wine, when told as a story by him. Many of the stories act to remind us of how true inner happiness is the only way to bring happiness into the life of those around us. Each story lifts a veil and lets us see life with a more clear vision. The author has a moral, a lesson or at least a thought for everyone at the end of his stories; they never fail to shake us out of our ideal, impassioned reverie.
