Book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System

Download or read book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System written by Greg Brooks and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will tell all you need to know about British English spelling. It's a reference work intended for anyone interested in the English language, especially those who teach it, whatever the age or mother tongue of their students. It will be particularly useful to those wishing to produce well-designed materials for teaching initial literacy via phonics, for teaching English as a foreign or second language, and for teacher training. English spelling is notoriously complicated and difficult to learn; it is correctly described as much less regular and predictable than any other alphabetic orthography. However, there is more regularity in the English spelling system than is generally appreciated. This book provides, for the first time, a thorough account of the whole complex system. It does so by describing how phonemes relate to graphemes and vice versa. It enables searches for particular words, so that one can easily find, not the meanings or pronunciations of words, but the other words with which those with unusual phoneme-grapheme/grapheme-phoneme correspondences keep company. Other unique features of this book include teacher-friendly lists of correspondences and various regularities not described by previous authorities, for example the strong tendency for the letter-name vowel phonemes (the names of the letters ) to be spelt with those single letters in non-final syllables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematicians are expected to publish their work: in journals, conference proceedings, and books. It is vital to advancing their careers. Later, some are asked to become editors. However, most mathematicians are trained to do mathematics, not to publish it. But here, finally, for graduate students and researchers interested in publishing their work, Steven G. Krantz, the respected author of several "how-to" guides in mathematics, shares his experience as an author, editor, editorial board member, and independent publisher. This new volume is an informative, comprehensive guidebook to publishing mathematics. Krantz describes both the general setting of mathematical publishing and the specifics about all the various publishing situations mathematicians may encounter. As with his other books, Krantz's style is engaging and frank. He gives advice on how to get your book published, how to get organized as an editor, what to do when things go wrong, and much more. He describes the people, the language (including a glossary), and the process of publishing both books and journals. Steven G. Krantz is an accomplished mathematician and an award-winning author. He has published more than 130 research articles and 45 books. He has worked as an editor of several book series, research journals, and for the Notices of the AMS. He is also the founder of the Journal of Geometric Analysis. Other titles available from the AMS by Steven G. Krantz are How to Teach Mathematics, A Primer of Mathematical Writing, A Mathematician's Survival Guide, and Techniques of Problem Solving.

Book Welcome to Florida WTF Our Journey to Paradise

Download or read book Welcome to Florida WTF Our Journey to Paradise written by Greg Winkler and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Florida. If only I had a sand dollar for every time an odd occurrence was explained away with the unique expression: Welcome to Florida. My wife, Vikki, and I decided to leave our home state of Wisconsin and follow our dream with a move to paradise, known to us as Florida. We had vacationed in the Sunshine State many times, and the sun and the sand had always called our names, so we finally followed the calling and landed in the town of Punta Gorda, just north of Fort Myers on the Gulf side of the state. For the most part, paradise was just as we'd imagined, but as we settled into our new home, we experienced many quirky and previously unknown facts of life. Turns out, Florida is not all Mickey Mouse and beaches. Several of our neighbors and colleagues are transplants themselves, experiencing many of the same abnormalities on their own when making the move south. As we shared our anecdotal stories with our now fellow Floridians, we were frequently met with that simple phrase in response: Welcome to Florida. I began to jot down these stories so that we might have more to offer future Floridians when they shared their tales with us. As I abbreviated the phrase "Welcome to Florida," I realized quickly that the acronym was WTF! It seemed appropriate that the common slang for "What the f----!" shared an abbreviation with the three words we heard so often. As you read about our Welcome to Florida journey, you too might find yourself shaking your head and saying, "WTF!"

Book The Golden Number

Download or read book The Golden Number written by Matila C. Ghyka and published by Inner Traditions. This book was released on 2016-10-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English translation of Ghyka’s masterwork on sacred geometry • Reveals how the Golden Number Phi underlies the spiritual nature of beauty and the hidden harmonies that connect the whole of creation • Explains how the spiritual mysteries of the Golden Number were passed down in an unbroken line of transmission from the Pythagorean brotherhoods through the medieval builders’ guilds to the secret societies of 18th-century Europe The Golden Number, or Phi (Φ), is a geometric ratio found throughout nature, often underlying the dimensions of objects considered especially beautiful. Simplified as 1.618 and symbolized by the Fibonacci sequence, the Golden Number represents the unique relationship within an object where the ratio of a larger part to a smaller part is the same as the ratio of the whole to the larger part. It appears in the proportions of the human face and body as well as in the proportions of animals, plants, and celestial bodies. Called the divine proportion by the monk Fra Luca Pacioli, whose book on the subject was illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci, Phi’s use in art and architecture goes back at least to the mystical mathematics of Pythagoras and his followers in the sixth century BCE. The perfect synthesis of spiritual and material, it can be found in the measurements of the sacred temples of Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Medieval and Renaissance Europe. The asymptotic series of integers that define Phi represent the macrocosm and microcosm as portrayed in Plato’s concept of the world soul. Presenting Matila Ghyka’s classic treatise on the Golden Number for the first time in English, this book reveals the many ways this ratio can be found not only in the organic forms of nature--such as in the spirals of shells or the number of petals on a flower--but also in the most beautiful and highest creations of humanity. One of the most important concepts of sacred geometry, its mysteries were passed down in an unbroken line of transmission from the Pythagorean brotherhoods through the medieval builders’ guilds to the secret societies of 18th-century Europe. Ghyka shows how the secrets of this divine proportion were not sought merely for their value in architecture, painting, and music, but also as a portal to a deeper understanding of the spiritual nature of beauty and the hidden harmonies that connect the whole of creation.

Book I Am a Very Productive Entrepreneur

Download or read book I Am a Very Productive Entrepreneur written by Mathias Svalina and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. "In this joyful critique of a Randian, post-industrial society, Mathias Svalina comments on both the compulsive desire to make the inconsumable and the often intangible recalcitrance of our attempts to create something useful in a world increasingly characterized by a manufactured sense of lack, anomie and disaffection, where we are daily beset by 'a kind of numbness, a shadow of desire or fear offset against a blank world.' Svalina refuses this numbness and offers something else, something completely stunning, in its place"—Gabriel Gudding. "This is a subversive and necessary book: the quixotic entrepreneurial spirit of individualist American capitalism is revealed as an inherently poetic construct, one that rests on theater, liminality, imaginative drive, contradiction, and failure. I AM A VERY PRODUCTIVE ENTREPRENEUR is poignant and brilliant; it's worth the investment"—Christian Hawkey.
