Book The Master Shipwright s Secrets

Download or read book The Master Shipwright s Secrets written by Richard Endsor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AWARDED THE ANDERSON MEDAL 2020 Inspired by the recent discovery of mathematically calculated digital plans for a fourth-rate ship by the Deptford master shipwright, John Shish, The Master Shipwright's Secrets is an illustrated history of Restoration shipbuilding focused on the Tyger, one of the smaller but powerful two-deck warships of the period. It examines the proceedings of King Charles II in deciding the types of ship he wanted and his relationship with his master shipwrights. This fascinating book reveals the many secrets of Charles II's shipwrights through an analysis of John Shish's plans for the Tyger, revealing innovative practical calculations which differ significantly from the few contemporary treatises on the subject and the complicated process of constructing the moulds necessary to make the ship's frame. All the other duties performed by the master shipwrights, such as repairing ships, controlling their men and keeping up with the latest inventions are also discussed in detail. The Master Shipwright's Secrets is replete with beautiful and detailed illustrations of the construction of the Tyger and explores both its complicated history and its complex rebuilding, complete with deck plans, internal sections, and large-scale external shaded drawings. The title also explores associated ships, including another fourth-rate ship, the Mordaunt, which was purchased into the Navy at the time and underwent a dimensional survey by John Shish. A rare contemporary section drawing of another fourth-rate English ship and constructional drawings of Shish's later fourth-rate ship, St Albans, are also included.

Download or read book Dutch Waters Mastering the Flow of Climate Resilience written by Anurag Anurag and published by Anurag Anurag. This book was released on 2024-05-04 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dutch Waters: Mastering the Flow of Climate Resilience" explores the innovative and comprehensive water management strategies of the Netherlands, a nation renowned for its expertise in living harmoniously with water despite significant geographical challenges. This book delves into the historical and modern adaptations that have enabled the Dutch to not only survive but thrive in a landscape largely below sea level, susceptible to flooding. The book begins by detailing the Netherlands' centuries-old relationship with water, highlighting traditional and contemporary engineering marvels such as dikes, canals, and advanced storm surge barriers. It discusses how these infrastructures have evolved in response to past flooding catastrophes and ongoing threats posed by climate change. Subsequent chapters explore the integration of water management into urban planning and the use of cutting-edge technologies and policies that exemplify the Dutch proactive and preventative approaches to water challenges. These include smart water grids, AI in flood management, and sustainable urban designs that incorporate water resilience. The narrative also underscores the Netherlands' global leadership in water management, detailing its contributions to international water policy, its role in global collaborations, and the export of Dutch expertise through aid and advisory services to nations facing similar threats. Conclusively, "Dutch Waters: Mastering the Flow of Climate Resilience" offers not just a comprehensive look at the Dutch mastery over water management but also serves as a blueprint for other nations. It illustrates how embracing water-related challenges with innovative solutions can lead to greater sustainability, security, and resilience against the backdrop of global climate change. The book is a testament to the power of integrated planning, technological innovation, and international cooperation in building a water-wise future.

Download or read book The Information Master written by Jacob Soll and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Colbert has long been celebrated as Louis XIV's minister of finance, trade, and industry. More recently, he has been viewed as his minister of culture and propaganda. In this lively and persuasive book, Jake Soll has given us a third Colbert, the information manager." ---Peter Burke, University of Cambridge "Jacob Soll gives us a road map drawn from the French state under Colbert. With a stunning attention to detail Colbert used knowledge in the service of enhancing royal power. Jacob Soll's scholarship is impeccable and his story long overdue and compelling." ---Margaret Jacob, University of California, Los Angeles "Nowadays we all know that information is the key to power, and that the masters of information rule the world. Jacob Soll teaches us that Jean-Baptiste Colbert had grasped this principle three and a half centuries ago, and used it to construct a new kind of state. This imaginative, erudite, and powerfully written book re-creates the history of libraries and archives in early modern Europe, and ties them in a novel and convincing way to the new statecraft of Europe's absolute monarchs." ---Anthony Grafton, Princeton University "Brilliantly researched, superbly told, and timely, Soll's story is crucial for the history of the modern state." ---Keith Baker, Stanford University When Louis XIV asked his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert---the man who was to oversee the building of Versailles and the Royal Academy of Sciences, as well as the navy, the Paris police force, and French industry---to build a large-scale administrative government, Colbert created an unprecedented information system for political power. In The Information Master, Jacob Soll shows how the legacy of Colbert's encyclopedic tradition lies at the very center of the rise of the modern state and was a precursor to industrial intelligence and Internet search engines. Soll's innovative look at Colbert's rise to power argues that his practice of collecting knowledge originated from techniques of church scholarship and from Renaissance Italy, where merchants recognized the power to be gained from merging scholarship, finance, and library science. With his connection of interdisciplinary approaches---regarding accounting, state administration, archives, libraries, merchant techniques, ecclesiastical culture, policing, and humanist pedagogy---Soll has written an innovative book that will redefine not only the history of the reign of Louis XIV and information science but also the study of political and economic history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We proudly present the proceedings of 2nd International Seminar on Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies 2020 (STRUKTURAL 2020). It focuses on how disruptive era influences participants field of researches, especially in Humanities and Social Studies. As we know, the world today is changing and the world we are facing now is the one where everything is connected. Not only are our PCs, our tablets, our hand phones, and other devices connected but everything that happens in societies is also now “connected”. Today, even a robbery incident in a small village has a possibility to make a city in another part of the world collapse. This butterfly effect of social change may also give a big impact in our understanding and our field of study of social sciences and humanities. More than 70 manuscripts were presented at this conference with around 41 of them selected to be published in proceedings. We hope by this conference, discussions on how research on humanities and social studies is possible in a disruptive era will give a perspective for the social and humanities studies development.
