Book excerpt: Excerpt from Succession in the Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints The fact that many honest people in the United States and other countries are being led astray by the pretentions of the "Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," or "Josephite Church," as it is more commonly called, must justify the publication of this work. My desire to preserve from error those not acquainted with the order of the priesthood of God, and the facts of church history in the great dispensation of the last days, has been the incentive which prompted me to write it. Moreover, though the facts of church history which of themselves disprove the claims of the "Josephite Church" are abundant, yet they are scattered through the church works in such a manner as to make it exceedingly difficult for the elders of The Church to consult them; and, therefore, the writer believes he is doing a service to those elders who are and shall hereafter be engaged in the ministry, especially to those who travel in the localities where they will come in contact with "Josephite" pretensions - by publishing this treatise on the Succession in the Presidency Of The Church. I have endeavored to treat the theme on as broad a basis as possible, and have avoided technical disputes with our opponents, which only serve to burden the subject with matter that is not only unprofitable in itself, but wearying to the patience of the reader. Nor does the successful issue of our argument demand that we stop to contend over every error, either in history or argument, made by "Josephites." Did we attempt it, our task would be endless. An attorney being called upon to explain why his absent client should not be punished for contempt of court, told the judge he could assign several good reasons for the absence of his client - reasons which he hoped and believed would clear him, even in the opinion of the judge, of any intention to treat the court with disrespect. "You may name them," gruffly said the judge. "Well, then, your honor, in the first place my client is dead; and in the second place - " "Never mind your 'in the second place, '" said the judge, "if the man is dead that is sufficient - the court dismisses the case." Roberts on "Succession in the Presidency of the Church" The only apology needed for the appearance of this work is, that we have been attacked, and it is both a privilege and a duty to respond. Some have thought the church was too slow and should have replied long ago. But had we rushed into print when the work of Mr. Roberts first appeared, we would have done so unadvisedly. We did not know whether he was authorized to write or not; nor did we know whether the church he represented would indorse his positions; hence no one was appointed to reply; though it was not lost sight of, and several, of the elders upon their own responsibility were carefully collecting material; for use in such reply. Now that the representatives of the church in Utah, both in Europe and America, have made it their chief weapon of attack and defense, we think the opportune time has come, for they are thus pledged to its support. Further, we have the direct testimony of Mr. Roberts that the First Presidency in Utah indorsed his work. The book was copyrighted in February, 1894. In the latter part of the year 1895 Mr. Roberts, together with Moses Thatcher, fell under the displeasure of church authorities for his political actions; while under the ban of disapproval he was interviewed, and the interview published in the Salt Lake Tribune for October 14, 1895. All his journals, covering thousands of pages, I have read with such discriminating judgment as I could bring to the task. The reader, therefore, need not be reminded that this biography contains only a small part, the most important part it is hoped, of the things he wrote. He was so careful and painstaking, and so completely devoted to the task of keeping a journal, that his writings have been sought in compiling much of the important data in Church history which has already been given to the world. His work, therefore, is not unknown to those familiar with Church history. Some of his life has been published in the Deseret News, and "Leaves from My Journal" contains important chapters. Magazines and Church publications have in them reminiscences which he has given to the readers of those periodicals at different times. All missionaries will be interested in the marvelous experiences which he had while working in the spread of the gospel message. Others will read with peculiar interest the recital of events in the travels of the pioneers from the Missouri River to Salt Lake Valley, and others will read with satisfaction the words that fell from the lips of those prophets with whom he was immediately associated - Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and John Taylor. The life of Wilford Woodruff was full of marvels. It was a simple life in which he revealed his heart and his purposes freely. The frankness of his expressions, his care for details, and his conscientious regard for the truth made him, perhaps, the best chronicler of events in all the history of the Church.
