Book Successful Fur Trapping

Download or read book Successful Fur Trapping written by Keith Blackwood and published by . This book was released on 2003-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twenty-first century many nations acquired the capability of detonating nuclear weapons. They proceeded to do so indiscriminately. The surface of the planet Earth became a desolate wasteland. The population of the planet was halved. The government of the United States moved underground. From the safety they achieved they attempted to rectify the situation. An entire generation grew up in an artificial environment. Three young Bellydwellers became curious about life topside. They ventured above ground and met their counterparts. Bart, Mitch, and Georgie joined the Topsiders to unseat the governing body that wasn't bringing any relief to the people living in peril on the surface of the Earth. The Reactionaries Against the Destruction of Society, RADS, mounted a successful crusade to wrest the power from the incumbents. They set in motion the programs that would destroy the enemies and restore the air and water to a useful condition. All progressed well until other nations became greedy for the economic and political power that America had regained. All Hell broke loose and the government was once more buried underground. The three Bellydwellers who had supported the RADS in their bold endeavor now sought a solution to Earth's problems out in the universe. They boarded a spacecraft whose mission was to seek a planet where they could begin a new life. AWAKENED BELLYDWELLERS tells the story of the lives three young adults who were determined to create a good environment for all mankind.

Book The Science of Trapping

Download or read book The Science of Trapping written by E. Kreps and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-03-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science of Trapping. Hunting and Trapping Guide. Includes sections on; The Trapper's Art; The Skunk; The Mink; The Weasel; The Marten; The Fisher; The Otter; The Beaver; The Muskrat; The Fox; The Wolf; The Bear; The Raccoon; The Badger; The Opossum; The Lynx; The Bay Lynx or Wild Cat; The Cougar; The Wolverine; Describes the fur bearing animals, their nature, habits and distribution, with practical methods for their capture. Among the many outdoor occupations, trapping the furbearing animals is perhaps the most pleasant and in many instances is also very profitable. Although trapping was one of the earliest industries of this country, the occupation has not passed away, along with the vanishing wilderness, for there is more trapping done today than at any time during the past. Scattered all over North America, in both the thickly settled portions and the more remote districts are thousands of trappers who are each season deriving both pleasure and profit from this unique calling. Trapping in itself is an art. Many of the wild creatures are exceedingly wary and the trapper must match his reason against the instinct, the natural wariness and the acquired knowledge of the animals. This wariness alone has saved some species of animals from extinction, and although man is superior to all brute life, such intelligent animals as the fox and the wolf frequently prove a match for the most expert of trappers. In order to be successful, one must know the wild animals as a mother knows her child. He must also know and use the most practical methods of trapping, and it is my object to give in this work, the most successful trapping methods known. These modes of trapping the furbearing animals have for the most part been learned from actual experience in various parts of the country, but I also give the methods of other successful trappers, knowing them to be as good as my own. I am personally acquainted with some of the most expert trappers in North America and have also followed the Indians over their trap lines and in this way have learned many things which to the white man are not generally known.

Book Fur Fortune and Empire The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America

Download or read book Fur Fortune and Empire The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America written by Eric Jay Dolin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Seattle Times selection for one of Best Non-Fiction Books of 2010 Winner of the New England Historial Association's 2010 James P. Hanlan Award Winner of the Outdoor Writers Association of America 2011 Excellence in Craft Award, Book Division, First Place "A compelling and well-annotated tale of greed, slaughter and geopolitics." —Los Angeles Times As Henry Hudson sailed up the broad river that would one day bear his name, he grew concerned that his Dutch patrons would be disappointed in his failure to find the fabled route to the Orient. What became immediately apparent, however, from the Indians clad in deer skins and "good furs" was that Hudson had discovered something just as tantalizing. The news of Hudson's 1609 voyage to America ignited a fierce competition to lay claim to this uncharted continent, teeming with untapped natural resources. The result was the creation of an American fur trade, which fostered economic rivalries and fueled wars among the European powers, and later between the United States and Great Britain, as North America became a battleground for colonization and imperial aspirations. In Fur, Fortune, and Empire, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin chronicles the rise and fall of the fur trade of old, when the rallying cry was "get the furs while they last." Beavers, sea otters, and buffalos were slaughtered, used for their precious pelts that were tailored into extravagant hats, coats, and sleigh blankets. To read Fur, Fortune, and Empire then is to understand how North America was explored, exploited, and settled, while its native Indians were alternately enriched and exploited by the trade. As Dolin demonstrates, fur, both an economic elixir and an agent of destruction, became inextricably linked to many key events in American history, including the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812, as well as to the relentless pull of Manifest Destiny and the opening of the West. This work provides an international cast beyond the scope of any Hollywood epic, including Thomas Morton, the rabble-rouser who infuriated the Pilgrims by trading guns with the Indians; British explorer Captain James Cook, whose discovery in the Pacific Northwest helped launch America's China trade; Thomas Jefferson who dreamed of expanding the fur trade beyond the Mississippi; America's first multimillionaire John Jacob Astor, who built a fortune on a foundation of fur; and intrepid mountain men such as Kit Carson and Jedediah Smith, who sliced their way through an awe inspiring and unforgiving landscape, leaving behind a mythic legacy still resonates today. Concluding with the virtual extinction of the buffalo in the late 1800s, Fur, Fortune, and Empire is an epic history that brings to vivid life three hundred years of the American experience, conclusively demonstrating that the fur trade played a seminal role in creating the nation we are today.

Book Trapping as a Profession

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trapping as a Profession: Trapping Grounds of North America; Guide to Methods of Trapping Them Successfully; Fur Prospecting; Professional Trappers' Methods; And Opportunities of Making Money at This Profession Guide to the Best Trapping Grounds of North America - How to Reach Them - What to Take - Typical Methods of Trapping and Making a Living in the Woods - Brief Account of the Writer's Trapping Experiences in the Tennessee Mountains, Maryland Marshes, Adirondacks, St. Lawrence River Valley and the Wilds of the Michigan Peninsular By Dick Wood The aim of this booklet is to survey concisely the trapping grounds of North America, suggesting favorable localities and means of getting there and how to go about establishing trap lines and planning a winters campaign. It is not a guide in the sense of a tourists guide, which may feature conditions and places that do not vary from year to year. It is impossible to estimate accurately the abundance of game and fur bearing animals within a given locality, for the reason all wild animals constantly migrate to a varying extent. It is even more impossible to predict the game and trapping prospects for any appreciable period in the future. There are too many factors which must be reckoned with, besides others not antcipated. Some causes that will suddenly scatter or destroy game animals are invasions by lumbering companies, large hunting parties and homeseekers, the inauguration of an unwise game law which may nearly exterminate some particular bird or animal of value to the trapper, the migration of animals, periodically and for natural causes, diseases among rabbits and other prey of fur bearers, and more often weather conditions both past and for the duration of the trapping expedition.
