Book Substance Use Disorders in the U S Armed Forces

Download or read book Substance Use Disorders in the U S Armed Forces written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems stemming from the misuse and abuse of alcohol and other drugs are by no means a new phenomenon, although the face of the issues has changed in recent years. National trends indicate substantial increases in the abuse of prescription medications. These increases are particularly prominent within the military, a population that also continues to experience long-standing issues with alcohol abuse. The problem of substance abuse within the military has come under new scrutiny in the context of the two concurrent wars in which the United States has been engaged during the past decade-in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn). Increasing rates of alcohol and other drug misuse adversely affect military readiness, family readiness, and safety, thereby posing a significant public health problem for the Department of Defense (DoD). To better understand this problem, DoD requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) assess the adequacy of current protocols in place across DoD and the different branches of the military pertaining to the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). Substance Use Disorders in the U.S. Armed Forces reviews the IOM's task of assessing access to SUD care for service members, members of the National Guard and Reserves, and military dependents, as well as the education and credentialing of SUD care providers, and offers specific recommendations to DoD on where and how improvements in these areas could be made.

Book Minnesota 1115 a Substance Use Disorder System Reform Demonstration Project Evaluation

Download or read book Minnesota 1115 a Substance Use Disorder System Reform Demonstration Project Evaluation written by NORC (Organization) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Minnesota, as in other states, there is concern about the disproportionate impact of substance use disorder (SUD), including opioids, on communities of color. The state's most recent Opioid Dashboard Report for 2018 illustrates that American Indian and Black Minnesotans are much more likely to suffer from fatal overdoses than their White peers. Therefore, access to comprehensive SUD treatment, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), is essential to addressing these community needs. Recent research has highlighted the inequities associated with access to MAT for treatment of opioid use disorders (OUD). This research was national in scope and found that the capacity to provide methadone was lower in counties with more racial segregation. Given these findings, the Minnesota Behavioral Health Division, Department of Human Services (DHS), requested a state-based analysis of access to MAT services. This analysis will increase the Department's understanding of the role that MAT provider distribution may have on access to this service for Medicaid enrollees under the 1115 Substance Use Disorder (SUD) System Reform Demonstration."--Page 1.

This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All across the United States, individuals, families, communities, and health care systems are struggling to cope with substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders. Substance misuse and substance use disorders have devastating effects, disrupt the future plans of too many young people, and all too often, end lives prematurely and tragically. Substance misuse is a major public health challenge and a priority for our nation to address. The effects of substance use are cumulative and costly for our society, placing burdens on workplaces, the health care system, families, states, and communities. The Report discusses opportunities to bring substance use disorder treatment and mainstream health care systems into alignment so that they can address a person's overall health, rather than a substance misuse or a physical health condition alone or in isolation. It also provides suggestions and recommendations for action that everyone-individuals, families, community leaders, law enforcement, health care professionals, policymakers, and researchers-can take to prevent substance misuse and reduce its consequences.

Book Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders

Download or read book Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

Download or read book Health Care Reform written by American Psychiatric Association and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was passed in March 2010, includes provisions to expand the scope of mental health care available to most Americans. What do psychiatrists need to know about the provisions of the health reform law to practice most effectively and best serve their patients? Health Care Reform: A Primer for Psychiatrists is a compilation of resources designed to educate psychiatrists and other mental health professionals about key elements of the reform law. At its core are three articles from a special section on health reform that appeared in the November 2010 issue of Psychiatric Services. Each article addresses a key question for the organization and financing of mental health and substance abuse care under health care reform: How should states set up their health exchanges to ensure that the needs of people with mental illness are addressed? Will coverage of mental health services be adequate under the law's provisions? Can integration of mental and physical health care -- a particular focus of health reform -- improve the quality and efficiency of care for people with mental illness? This book also provides a list of additional readings, with links to the source documents. These include "backgrounder" articles published in Psychiatric News, analyses and commentaries from the American Journal of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Services, and white papers and other useful documents compiled by staff of the APA Department of Government Relations.

Book The Drug Abuse Treatment System

Download or read book The Drug Abuse Treatment System written by John Haaga and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1993 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among various issues for increasing the effectiveness of the drug abuse treatment system are matching clients with treatment programs and improving program accountability. From a practical perspective, no tool is currently available to assist agencies make better matches, and in many communities the number of alternatives (i.e., truly different program content and philosophy) is limited. Moreover, there is no conclusive scientific evidence to support any particular matching strategy. And it is unclear whether the policy goal should be to improve the probability of positive individual outcomes or to reduce aggregate drug use. Research is needed to inform the practical and theoretical issues. Although improved accountability is clearly needed, previous approaches have not been successful. New proposals for outcome monitoring are worth pursuing, although providers' responses could defeat the purpose of reforms. Finally, there is a need for studies that will help set reasonable performance standards.

Book Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance Use Conditions

Download or read book Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance Use Conditions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, more than 33 million Americans receive health care for mental or substance-use conditions, or both. Together, mental and substance-use illnesses are the leading cause of death and disability for women, the highest for men ages 15-44, and the second highest for all men. Effective treatments exist, but services are frequently fragmented and, as with general health care, there are barriers that prevent many from receiving these treatments as designed or at all. The consequences of this are seriousâ€"for these individuals and their families; their employers and the workforce; for the nation's economy; as well as the education, welfare, and justice systems. Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions examines the distinctive characteristics of health care for mental and substance-use conditions, including payment, benefit coverage, and regulatory issues, as well as health care organization and delivery issues. This new volume in the Quality Chasm series puts forth an agenda for improving the quality of this care based on this analysis. Patients and their families, primary health care providers, specialty mental health and substance-use treatment providers, health care organizations, health plans, purchasers of group health care, and all involved in health care for mental and substanceâ€"use conditions will benefit from this guide to achieving better care.
