Book Subsequent Educational Attainment of High School Dropouts

Download or read book Subsequent Educational Attainment of High School Dropouts written by Jennifer Berktold and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1998 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses data from the 1988 National Education Longitudinal Study and its 1994 followup to examine the educational and employment attainment of 1988 eighth graders who dropped out of high school. About half of them ultimately completed high school. By 1994, 16% had completed a high school diploma, 29% had completed a General Educational Development (GED) or equivalency certificate, and 24% were working on a diploma or GED. The remaining one-third of dropouts had no credential and were not pursuing any further education. High school completion among dropouts was associated with socioeconomic status. Dropouts who had demonstrated academic ability, although not necessarily academic performance, were most likely to complete high school. By 1994, 2 years after most of the"cohort" had completed high school, high school completion among dropouts was associated with some educational, but few employment, characteristics. In 1994, most dropouts were either working, looking for work, or at home. About the same proportion of dropouts as 1988 eighth graders who had never dropped out reported working full time or part time in 1994, but those who had never dropped out were more likely to be taking academic courses. More than half of those who had never dropped out were enrolled in 2-year or 4-year postsecondary institutions. About one in four dropouts had enrolled in a postsecondary institution by 1994. One appendix is a glossary, and the other contains technical notes and remarks on methodology. (Contains 19 tables, 7 figures, and 12 references.) (SLD)

Download or read book Descriptive Summary of 1989 90 Beginning Postsecondary Students Two Years Later written by Robert Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a descriptive summary of data from the first follow-up of the 1990/92 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:90/92), a comprehensive examination of information on enrollment, persistence, and attainment in postsecondary education for students who began postsecondary education in 1989-90 regardless of when they completed high school. The BPS data also include detailed information about financial aid, employment, family formation, and civic and political participation of students. The BPS sample of 6,500 students was drawn from first-time students who participated in the 1990 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS). Among these first findings are: (1) about half of the students originally enrolled in 2- to 3-year institutions, 42 percent enrolled in 4-year institutions and 9 percent enrolled in less-than-2-year institutions; (2) 47 percent of those who aspired to 2 or more years of college (but less than a bachelor's degree) when they first enrolled in postsecondary education, did not re-enroll in 1990-91; (3) during the first year of enrollment, 45 percent received some kind of financial aid; (4) of beginning students who worked while enrolled (87 percent of all students), 76 percent considered their primary role that of student; and (5) as of February 1992, 18 percent of the sample were married and an additional 5 percent had been previously married. Detailed data are presented in 41 tables and 17 figures. Appendixes contain technical notes, methodology, and a glossary. (JB)

Book The adult lives of at risk students the roles of attainment and engagement in high school statistical analysis report

Download or read book The adult lives of at risk students the roles of attainment and engagement in high school statistical analysis report written by Jeremy D. Finn and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines heterogeneity in young adult outcomes among students at risk for school failure due to low socioeconomic status (SES). It addresses the question: "Among students at risk due to status characteristics, what are the relationships of high school engagement and attainments with post-high school outcomes?" Two sets of outcomes are considered: entry and persistence in postsecondary education, and employment and income as a young adult. The report distinguishes between "status risk factors" such as SES and race/ethnicity and two other sets of risk factors: behavioral risk factors and academic risk factors. Behavioral risk factors are behaviors and attitudes closely related to learning, for example, attendance, paying attention to the teacher, completing coursework, and developing a sense that schooling is important to future life successes. These behaviors and attitudes are referred to as school engagement. "Disengagement" (e.g., not attending class, not completing assignments) can create severe impediments to learning. Appended are: (1) Technical Notes; (2) Standard Errors Tables; (3) Other Statistical Tables; and (4) Variables Used in This Report. (Contains 148 endnotes and 19 tables.).

Book Dropout Rates in the United States 2000

Download or read book Dropout Rates in the United States 2000 written by Phillip Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the 13th in a series that focuses on high school dropout and completion rates, presenting data on 2000 rates and including time series data on high school dropout and completion rates for 1972-00. In addition to extending time series data reported in earlier years, this report examines the characteristics of high school dropouts and high school completers in 2000. It shows that while progress was made during the 1970s and 1980s in reducing high school dropout rates and increasing high school completion rates, these rates remained comparatively stable during the 1990s. Data are presented on event and status dropout rates and high school completion rates, with statistics on income, race/ethnicity, age and sex, and region and state. Overall, in October 2000, 5 out of every 100 youths enrolled in high school in October 1999 had dropped out. They accounted for approximately one-half million of the 10 million people age 15-14 years enrolled in high school in the previous October. Four appendices, which comprise half of the report, feature standard error tables for text tables, tables in support of figures, supplemental tables, and technical notes. (Contains 27 tables and 6 figures.) (SM)

Book Profile of Undergraduates in U S Postsecondary Education Institutions

Download or read book Profile of Undergraduates in U S Postsecondary Education Institutions written by Laura Horn and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report profiles undergraduates enrolled in postsecondary education for the academic year 1992-93. It relies on data from the 1992-93 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, third in a series conducted by the Department of Education. The report begins with an essay that explores the extent to which undergraduates have outside responsibilities and enrollment patterns that increase their risk of not attaining a degree or postsecondary certificate. Following the essay, a compendium of tables provides comprehensive information about enrollment patterns, programs of study, student characteristics, financial aid receipt and employment, students' educational aspirations, and their community service participation. Not since the 1970s has the typical postsecondary student been a recent high school graduate enrolled full-time at a four-year school, and working toward a Bachelor's degree. On the contrary, such students represented only about one-third of undergraduates enrolled in 1992-93. The first section of the compendium contains detailed risk factor tables, and the remaining sections are marked to highlight topic findings. (Contains 9 text tables, 8 figures, and 58 tables in the compendium.) (SLD)

Book Educational Attainment of 1980 High School Sophomores by 1992

Download or read book Educational Attainment of 1980 High School Sophomores by 1992 written by John Tuma and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from the fourth follow-up to the High School and Beyond survey were analyzed to identify patterns in the educational attainment, employment outcomes, and family formation of the 1980 sophomore class in 1992. Those members of the 1980 sophomore class who set high goals in high school tended to have higher average levels of educational attainment 10 years after leaving high school than did those who had lower postsecondary expectation. Regardless of respondents' socioeconomic status or performance on standardized tests, those who delayed entry into postsecondary education were less likely to earn a bachelor's degree or higher. Earnings were significantly related to level of educational attainment. Married respondents earned more than those who were never married or divorced. Respondents' voting rates in the 1988 elections were positively associated with educational attainment. More than 95% of those surveyed valued success in work and having steady work, strong friendships, and better opportunities for their children, whereas only 56% felt that having money was important. Approximately half of the respondents had at least one child by 1992, and nearly 10% had three children. (Forty-six tables/figures are included. Appended are a glossary, technical notes, and nine essay standard error tables.) (MN)
