As soon as she catches sight of her two hosts, Greg and Devin, she figures: what better way to take her mind off her troubles than with an affair with one of them? Download or read book Cow Boys and Cattle Men written by Jacqueline M. Moore and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.

Download or read book Mad Cowboy written by Howard F. Lyman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-07-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told by the man who kicked off the infamous lawsuit between Oprah and the cattlemen, Mad Cowboy is an impassioned account of the highly dangerous practices of the cattle and dairy industries. Howard Lyman's testimony on The Oprah Winfrey Show revealed the deadly impact of the livestock industry on our well-being. It not only led to Oprah's declaration that she'd never eat a burger again, it sent shock waves through a concerned and vulnerable public. A fourth-generation Montana rancher, Lyman investigated the use of chemicals in agriculture after developing a spinal tumor that nearly paralyzed him. Now a vegetarian, he blasts through the propaganda of beef and dairy interests—and the government agencies that protect them—to expose an animal-based diet as the primary cause of cancer, heart disease, and obesity in this country. He warns that the livestock industry is repeating the mistakes that led to Mad Cow disease in England while simultaneously causing serious damage to the environment. Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, Mad Cowboy is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet—for the good of the planet and the health of us all.

Book excerpt: ?...an engrossing tale that encompasses a variety of hostilities across the entire West.?Fred Egloff, BooklistFrom the 1870s until the 1920s cattlemen and sheepmen clashed bitterly for rangeland in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. During five decades of irregular but vicious warfare, scores of attacks were launched by cattlemen, at least twenty-eight sheepmen and sixteen cowboys were killed, and more than 53,000 sheep were shot, clubbed, knifed, poisoned, dynamited and rimrocked. There were 120 raids and skirmishes across the West, including famous events such as the Pleasant Valley War, the murder of Willie Nickell, the Diamondfield Jack trial and the brutal Ten Sleep tragedy, and involving gunfighters Tom Horn and Commodore Perry Owens, cattle baron Charles Goodnight, and other frontier notables. The fifty-year conflict was waged in a magnificent arena of mountains and plains, a classic story of murderous aggression and retribution that forms one of the great dramas of Western history. Bill O?Neal has traveled throughout the West to collect information and background material, and his fast-paced Cattlemen vs. Sheepherders is the first book-length account of this long and bloody war.

Book excerpt: Tamara Barton has lusted after Connor Dunbar ever since she was old enough to know what those stirrings meant whenever he was near. Connor's refusal to see her as anything but the young girl he's befriended and protected for years soon drives them apart, but not before she catches an up-close, personal glimpse of him exerting the dominant control she's heard rumors about. Connor regrets the harsh words he spoke to Tamara when he caught her spying on him - as much as his lustful response to the look of need reflected on her face. He's been looking after the neighbor girl since the moment he saw her falling off her first horse at the age of ten, and doesn't plan on stopping now that she's a grown woman who thinks she wants their relationship to go in a different direction. He knows his sexual proclivities are not for the young, sweet kid he's so fond of, and wouldn't jeopardize their special bond by giving in to her desires. But Tamara always did have a way of getting what she wanted, and when he sees she is serious about becoming a member of the private lifestyle club he owns with his brother and best friend, Connor discovers he doesn't want her submitting to anyone but him. When he learns she's kept things from him that could have impacted her welfare, will he allow his failure to protect her to drive another wedge between them, or finally embrace a life with her at his side as more than just a cherished friend? Download or read book The Feminist and the Cowboy written by Alisa Valdes and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Dirty Girls Social Club returns with an engrossing memoir about how falling in love with a sexy cowboy turned her feminist beliefs upside down. Feminism was a religion in Alisa Valdes’s childhood home. Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem took the place of Barbies and left Valdes impressed with a feminist ideology that guided a prolific writing career—at twenty-two Valdes was named one of the top feminist writers under thirty by the editor of Ms Magazine. Yet despite her professional success, Valdes hit forty-two a single mom and a serial dater of inadequate men in tweed jackets—until she met the Cowboy. A conservative rancher, the Cowboy held the traditional views on gender roles that Valdes was raised to reject. Yet as she falls head-over-spurs for him and their relationship finds harmony, she finds the strength, peace, and happiness that comes from embracing her femininity. From their first date the Cowboy makes her pulse race, and she discovers that “when men… act like men rather than like emasculated boys, you as a woman will find not only great pleasure in submitting to them but also great growth as a person.” Told with plenty of humor and candor, The Feminist and the Cowboy will delight the many readers who made The Pioneer Woman a bestseller—not to mention every woman who dreams of being swept away by a rugged cowboy.

As Patton tastes small samples of the forbidden fruit, she becomes even more reckless in her enthusiasm to get the three brothers into her bed. Patton's wild schemes go too far and the brothers have to make a decision that will seal all their fates. *** 5 Angels: "From beginning to end this book scorches. Ms. Penn does a brilliant job of weaving the lust and love these four have for each other into a tale that does more than titillate. Her ability to engage the emotions of each character and bring them out in the open keeps this from being just a book about kinky sex. Sure there's plenty of that, but it's the deep emotions and love flowing through that turn this into a story worth reading. It's a fine line for an author to walk when portraying any BDSM lifestyle but Ms. Penn does it well and at no stage did any of it come across in a negative way. She explored the trust involved in such a relationship with skill and I thoroughly enjoyed Patton's submission to her three masters. I also enjoyed the way Patton's very independent, stubborn nature wasn't compromised in any way by her submission in the bedroom. Her body was more than happy to hand over her pleasure but her mind and spirit were never broken. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment of Ms. Penn's Cattleman's Club series." -- Rachel C., Fallen Angel Reviews. *** 5 Bookmarks: "I absolutely LOVED Patton's Way: Cattleman's Club, Book 1! I would rank this as one of my favorite stories of the year. Remember the name Jenny Penn as I predict this author as a true rising star among authors. This story hooked me right from the beginning and never let go, I couldn't put the book down. The plot twists and turns and the friction and heat between the brothers and Patton explode like an inferno. Patton's Way: Cattleman's Club, Book 1 is outstanding and I can't wait for the next story in this series, Hailey's Game. This story will turn you on like no other." -- Daria Wright, Wild on Books *** 5 Blue Ribbons: "Oh wow! I simply wasn't able to put this book down once I started reading. Patton's Way roused all sorts of emotions in me - everything from tears to laughter and even a little envy...ok, a lot of envy. I'm now anxiously awaiting upcoming books in this series - especially Hailey's Game which will have Patton's friend, Hailey, who is the subject of Cole and Kyle's desire. Cole and Hailey's antagonism for each other is just too intense not to result in a seriously passionate relationship and I'm really anxious to find out how Kyle fits into the mix." -- Chrissy Dionne, Romance Junkies
