Book Piety and Responsibility

Download or read book Piety and Responsibility written by John N. Sheveland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the writings of Karl Rahner, Karl Barth, and Vedanta Desika to disclose how each construes "piety" and "responsibility" as integral to each other. Each theologian expresses a fundamental unity of love of God and love of neighbour. Sheveland explores this unity in ecumenical and interreligious frameworks, showing how these authors privilege theology as practice, enactment, or simply as ethical. He uses the Renaissance genre of musical polyphony as a methodological tool by which to explore the aesthetic quality and the similarity-in-difference of the theological voices being compared. Polyphony's application to comparative theology includes the avoidance of caricature, domestication, and antagonism. In place of these is offered a fundamentally aesthetic paradigm by which to hear theological voices in terms of their unity-in-distinction.

Book A History of Spiritualism and the Occult in Salem

Download or read book A History of Spiritualism and the Occult in Salem written by Maggi Smith-Dalton and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elucidation of the Spiritualism movement in Salem in the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries. Salem, Massachusetts, is the quintessential New England town, with its cobbled streets and strong ties to the sea. With the notoriety of the Salem witch trials, the city's reputation has been irrevocably linked to the occult. However, few know the history behind the religion of Spiritualism and the social movement that took root in this romanticized land. At the turn of the century, seers, mediums and magnetic healers all hoped to connect to the spiritual world. The popularity of Spiritualism and renewed interest in the occult blossomed out of an attempt to find an intellectual and emotional balance between science and religion. Learn of early converts, the role of the venerable Essex Institute and the psychic legacy of “Moll” Pitcher. Historian Maggi Smith-Dalton delves into Salem’s exotic history, unraveling the beginnings of Spiritualism and the rise of the Witch City.

Book Four Essential Loves

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-05-22
  • ISBN : 1620324024
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book Four Essential Loves written by William R. McAlpine and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one determine the readiness of any candidate for leadership in ministry? Whether considering vocational ministry leadership or a position on a local board of elders or deacons, without question, knowledge and skills are essential. But an individual's readiness for leadership and ministry cannot be assessed solely on the basis of academic transcripts or impressive statistics found in a pastor or lay leader's annual report. While embracing knowledge and skill as essential to effective leadership and ministry, the author demonstrates how these dimensions are inadequate unless rooted in that which is less quantifiable, namely, heart-readiness. But what does heart-readiness entail or look like in the life of a leader in ministry? In a word that is grossly overused and profoundly misunderstood, love--and more specifically, love for the right things, in the right way, for the right reasons. This book is intended for those being trained in the bible college or seminary classroom but also for lay leaders already engaged in virtually any ministry context as well. Readers are encouraged to consider and cultivate four essential loves: love for God's Word, for Christ's church, for one's neighbor, and for oneself.

Book City of 201 Gods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacob Olupona
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2011-12-13
  • ISBN : 0520948548
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book City of 201 Gods written by Jacob Olupona and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a study that challenges familiar Western modes of thought, Jacob K. Olupona focuses on one of the most important religious centers in Africa and in the world: the Yorùbá city of Ilé-Ifè in southwest Nigeria. The spread of Yorùbá traditions in the African diaspora has come to define the cultural identity of millions of black and white people in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and the United States. Seen through the eyes of a native, this first comprehensive study of the spiritual and cultural center of the Yorùbá religion tells how the city went from great prominence to near obliteration and then rose again as a contemporary city of gods. Throughout, Olupona corroborates the indispensable linkages between religion, cosmology, migration, and kinship as espoused in the power of royal lineages, hegemonic state structure, gender, and the Yorùbá sense of place, offering the fullest portrait to date of this sacred African city.

Book The Gifts for the City

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andy Singleterry
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2023-10-20
  • ISBN : 1666758558
  • Pages : 147 pages

Download or read book The Gifts for the City written by Andy Singleterry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “How can I determine which spiritual gifts I have?” Wrong question! Paul writes about the spiritual gifts in his letters as capacities of communities rather than individuals, and he never makes a definitive, definable list. The gifts are fluid and dynamic, refusing to be pinned down. “How can we start to describe how the Spirit works through us?” is a much more useful question. This book helps you answer that question, and then applies principles about spiritual gifts to urban ministry. Cities present particular challenges to the teams who live and minister in them. Certain spiritual gifts are crucial to teams trying to love their neighbors, and their neighborhoods, as themselves.

Book Narratives of the Beginning of the Early Christian Church

Download or read book Narratives of the Beginning of the Early Christian Church written by Del Mueller and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have been present during the period following Pentecost? Imagine being one of those who believed and was baptized on that Festive Day. Then join Peter and John as they face the wrath of the Sanhedrin. Be part of the first communion service. Witness the selection of the seven deacons. Describe the terror the hypocrites in the congregation felt after observing a pronouncement of death to Ananias and Sapphira. Ride with Philip as he interprets Isaiah for an Ethiopian official. Become, with Paul, awestruck when Jesus appears as a blinding light and challenges: Paul! Paul! Why are you persecuting me? Follow Peters instructive ministry to Cornelius and his Gentile friends. Witness Peters imprisonment and miraculous escape. Observe the events that led to the spread of the Christian Church, reaching to and beyond Antioch in Syria. Del Mueller takes readers into the thoughts and hearts of the key witnesses to the beginning of the Christian Church. He writes a first-person account that provides readers with a unique historical perspective of the stories as they really could have happened. Narratives of the Beginning of the Christian Church will personalize the events that altered the world and show readers the humanness of those who were changed because of Jesus.

Book Neglected Virtues

  • Author : Glen Pettigrove
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-12-20
  • ISBN : 1000514404
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Neglected Virtues written by Glen Pettigrove and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the work that has been done on virtue has been devoted to getting virtue ethics a seat at the theoretical table. It has been concerned with showing that virtue ethics can provide a satisfactory account of right action to rival accounts offered by consequentialism and deontology. This volume of essays explores the nitty-gritty details of particular virtues. It includes original contributions from a number of leading scholars in virtue ethics. Most of the virtues discussed – such as ambition, cheerfulness, creativity, magnificence, pride, wit, and wonder – have been almost wholly neglected by contemporary ethicists. The volume also includes coverage of other virtues that have received a fair amount of attention in recent years, such as charity, hope, justice, practical wisdom, and temperance. Here the essays address largely ignored dimensions of these virtues and show how these discussions can enrich our understanding of neglected virtues. Neglected Virtues is a welcome addition to the scholarly literature on virtue ethics. Its focus on individual virtues, while not meant to be exhaustive, will open new avenues for future research in this rapidly growing area of ethics and moral philosophy.

Book I Give You Half the Road

Download or read book I Give You Half the Road written by Carol Spindel and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ivory Coast, the farewell “I give you half the road” is an expression of hospitality, urging a departing guest to come back again. After their first stay in a welcoming rural community in 1981, Carol Spindel and her husband did just that. Over the course of decades, they built a house and returned frequently, deepening their relationships with neighbors. Once considered the most stable country in West Africa, Ivory Coast was split by an armed rebellion in 2002 and endured a decade of instability and a violent conflict. Spindel provides an intimate glimpse into this turbulent period by weaving together the daily lives and paths of five neighbors. Their stories reveal Ivorians determined to reunite a divided country through reliance on mutual respect and obligation even while power-hungry politicians pursued xenophobic and anti-immigrant platforms for personal gain. Illuminating democracy as a fragile enterprise that must be continually invented and reinvented, I Give You Half the Road emphasizes the importance of connection, generosity, and forgiveness.
