This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of Canadian Parties in Transition continues and enriches the work of earlier editions in bringing together a highly respected group of scholars to offer a comprehensive account of the development of party politics in Canada. The book addresses the origin and the evolution of the Canadian party system and discusses how that system has been impacted by regionalism, brokerage politics, and political marketing. It focuses on the competing ideological currents that occupy the political stage while also paying attention to the role of third parties in federal politics. Contributors address the representation and democracy through an exploration of voting systems, direct democracy, the role occupied by constituencies, gender politics, and the distinct Quebec dynamics in the federal party system. Finally, the book analyses topical issues, such as electoral participation, social movements, right-wing populist parties, political campaigning, and digital party politics. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect ongoing transformations and includes nineteen new contributing authors and coverage of seven new topics. Canadian Parties in Transition presents a multi-faceted image of party dynamics, electoral behaviour, political marketing, and representative democracy.

Download or read book Interest Groups and Elections in Canada written by F. Leslie Seidle and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two studies in Interest Groups and Elections in Canada explore the nature and influence of special interest groups. They consider different aspects of the question, "In the context of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, how can the laws intended to secure a fair electoral process be reconciled with freedom of expression?" Janet Hiebert reviews the limits on interest groups adopted in 1974 and amended in 1983, profiles the groups involved int he 1988 federal election, and discusses relevant legislation and jurisprudence in the provinces and abroad. She concludes that spending limits for parties and candidates will only be effective if there are also restrictions on independent expenditures during elections by groups and individuals. Brian Tanguay and Barry Kay assess the influence attributed to locally oriented interest groups, including by members of Parliament, and conclude that these organizations have less influence on the political process than is the popular view. The authors conclude that dissatisfaction is a key variable explaining the role of these interest groups and their activities during elections.

Money, Politics, and Law is a study of electoral expenditure controls in Canada. Making frequent comparisons with the United States and Britain, it examines the background of electoral expenditure, the legislative control asserted on political parties, and the struggle arising from the potentially conflicting goals of equality enforced by fiscal control and the constitutional protection of liberty. This work will interest those involved with law and politics, as well as electoral law and civil liberties.
Download or read book The Return of the Trojan Horse written by Trevor Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Right-wing populist, in an oil-rich province, Ralph Klein has been a one-man wrecking crew, dismantling Alberta’s public sector and remaking the province into a freewheeling, capitalist paradise. This book re-examines Klein’s Alberta after a decade of deficit-slashing, tax--cutting -conservatism. First elected in 1993 on a platform of “common sense revolution,” a decade later Ralph Klein’s Conservative party remains in power, but the gloss is off its “revolution.” Deficits and debt have been eliminated, but new problems and new issues have arisen, such as energy deregulation and water shortages. Efforts to export the revolution-to remake Canada in Alberta’s image-have stalled, with the defeat of the Harris Conservatives in Ontario and the collapse of the Reform and Alliance parties federally. Meanwhile, at the worldwide level, neo--liberal globalization-all the rage in the early ’90s-is now in retreat, replaced by war, threats of terrorism and growing economic instability. The Return of the Trojan Horseexamines the long-term lessons of the Klein revolution and suggest where Alberta and Canada may be headed in the next decade. An original compilation of critical essays on Alberta’s policies, written by some of Alberta’s (and Canada’s) best authors who come from a wide spectrum of viewpoints and backgrounds, all blending insight with journalistic flair. “Peel away the careful packaging of the Klein government’s record and what have you got? This book tells the story. Facts, clear prose, and the courage to tell it straight make it essential reading.”-Canadian Forum Trevor Harrisonis currently an associate professor at the University of Lethbridge and research director for the Parkland Institute, an Alberta-based think tank dedicated to examining public policy issues. He is the author ofOf Passionate Intensity: Right-Wing Populism and the Reform Party of CanadaandRequiem for a Lightweight: Stockwell Day and Image Politics.
