Mathematical know-how is widely regarded as essential not only to the life chances of individuals, but also to the health of communities and the economic well-being of nations. With the globalisation of education in an increasingly market-oriented world, mathematics has received intensified attention in the first decade of the twenty-first century with a shifting emphasis on utilitarian aspects of mathematics. This is reflected in the reconceptualisation of mathematical competence as mathematical literacy, loosely conceived as those ways of thinking, reasoning and working “mathematically” that allow us to engage effectively in everyday situations, in many occupations, and the cut and thrust of world economies as active, empowered and participatory citizens. It is no surprise then that mathematics has become one of the most politically charged subjects in primary school curricula worldwide. We are experiencing an unprecedented proliferation of regional and national strategies to establish benchmarks, raise standards, enhance achievement, close gaps, and leave no child behind in mathematics education. Industries have sprung up around the design, administration and monitoring of standardised assessment to measure and compare children’s mathematical achievement against identified benchmarks and each other.

The analysis takes place at three transition points in the educational trajectory of young people: at 16+, 18+ and at graduation from university. It provides new evidence about these transitions in three ways. First, using a taxonomy of A-levels developed for this thesis, it uses administrative population data for three cohorts of English students to examine the relationship between social background and A-level subject choices categorised according to their published efficacy for university entry. Less privileged young people are less likely to take A-levels universities say they prefer, but the considerable observed gap is largely accounted for by prior attainment and choices of subjects and qualification types at 14-16. Prior attainment is also of primary importance at the second point of transition, at 18+, but analysis using linked national school and university data suggests that A-level subject choices do make a difference to ranking of university attended, over and above attainment. Finally, the importance of prestige of university and the subject of study in the third transition, to graduate employment in an elite profession is considered, using newly available applications and admissions data from a large professional financial services firm. Again, the large raw gap in success rates by university type is almost entirely accounted for by prior attainment, although degree course subject plays a minor role. The direct effect of A-level subject choice is negligible at this transition. The overall thrust of this thesis is that prior attainment and earlier qualifications choices have consequences at each transition, but, over and above attainment, A-level choices can affect high status university entry, and hence, to some extent, gaining a top graduate traineeship.

Through corpus-based analysis of both interactive conversations and monologic narratives, Amy M. Lindstrom reveals how the discourse/pragmatic factors of accessibility and chronological ordering, the prosodic effect of linking, and the mechanical effect of priming intersect to provide a rigorous account of subject (un)expression in spoken American English. Higher degrees of linking, cohesion, and connection lead to more unexpressed subjects. Lindstrom also analyzes frequent constructions with unexpressed subjects vis-à-vis paths of grammaticalization. The author presents a measurement of discourse connectedness that shows how the intersection of prosody and pragmatics illustrates the powerful effect of spontaneous discourse in shaping grammar. This study adds to our understanding of language and cognition by contributing to our knowledge of the conceptualization, categorization, and representation of experience and memory.
