Book Subcritical Liquid Oxygen Storage and Supply System for Use in Weightless Environments

Download or read book Subcritical Liquid Oxygen Storage and Supply System for Use in Weightless Environments written by H. Robert Lundeen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A subcritical liquid oxygen storage and supply system for use in weightless environments was designed, combining the properties of the capillary-wick to displace gas phase from a two-phase mixture, thus assuring liquid phase delivery, with the dominant surface tension forces which cause liquid phase to accumulate at the periphery and gas phase to locate at the center of a spherical container in a weightless environment. A 10-liter prototype unit was fabricated based on these concepts. The complete system includes, in addition to the storage container, associated temperature, pressure, acceleration, and strain sensors to monitor system performance in weightless conditions. Liquid phase delivery from the pressure vessel has been demonstrated by the oxygen-nitrogen mixed gas test technique. The testing program conducted on the prototype unit gave every indication that the design concept is satisfactory for weightless operation. (Author).

Book Subcritical Liquid Oxygen Storage and Conversion System for Omnigravic Operation

Download or read book Subcritical Liquid Oxygen Storage and Conversion System for Omnigravic Operation written by R. L. Polk and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and development of a low-pressure storage system for the storage of liquid oxygen, the conversion of the liquid to usable, gaseous state, and the controlled delivery of the gaseous oxygen under omnigravic conditions, are studied. The program was an extension of the feasibility study of a system employing an internal relief valve, and provided for, in particular, the minimization of evaporation loss of stored liquid oxygen through standby venting caused by heat leakage to the stored liquid, and the development of suitable fluid capacity gauging equipment. An account is presented of the design and development of a subcritical liquid oxygen storage and conversion system and outlines the final engineering conclusions and recommendations.

Book Cryogenic Technology and Applications

Download or read book Cryogenic Technology and Applications written by A.R. Jha and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryogenic Technology and Applications describes the need for smaller cryo-coolers as a result of the advances in the miniaturization of electrical and optical devices and the need for cooling and conducting efficiency. Cryogenic technology deals with materials at low temperatures and the physics of their behavior at these temps. The book demonstrates the ongoing new applications being discovered for cryo-cooled electrical and optical sensors and devices, with particular emphasis on high-end commercial applications in medical and scientific fields as well as in the aerospace and military industries. This book summarizes the important aspects of cryogenic technology critical to the design and development of refrigerators, cryo-coolers, and micro-coolers needed by various commercial, industrial, space and military systems. Cryogenic cooling plays an important role in unmanned aerial vehicle systems, infrared search and track sensors, missile warning receivers, satellite tracking systems, and a host of other commercial and military systems.* Provides an overview of the history of the development of cryogenic technology* Includes the latest information on micro-coolers for military and space applications* Offers detailed information on high-capacity cryogenic refrigerator systems used in applications such as food storage, high-power microwave and laser sensors, medical diagnostics, and infrared detectors

Book Cryogenic Solid Oxygen Storage and Sublimation Investigation

Download or read book Cryogenic Solid Oxygen Storage and Sublimation Investigation written by John E. Ahern and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of solid oxygen for storage and supply systems in space applications was studied both analytically and experimentally. The analysis indicated that the use of solid oxygen could provide substantially longer storage times over that obtainable with subcritical and supercritical oxygen. Oxygen transport from the vacuum storage condition of solid oxygen to a condition suitable for breathing was demonstrated experimentally by two methods, vapor transport using cryosorption pumps and solid transport by mechanically moving the solid through a vapor lock. A preliminary analysis of the transport methods indicates that the mechanical system should be the most suitable.

Book A Dielectrophoretic Liquid Oxygen Converter for Operation in Weightless Environments

Download or read book A Dielectrophoretic Liquid Oxygen Converter for Operation in Weightless Environments written by John R. Blutt and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses, experiments, and designs were executed to establish the performance characteristics, optimum weight, and safety of a dielectrophoretic liquid oxygen converter. A theory was developed for electric field gradient stabilization of liquid/vapor systems. Laboratory liquid-liquid experiments and KC-135 zero-g tests corroborated the theoretical performance. Vibration tests demonstrated the structural integrity of typical electrodes and their supports. Also experiments were conducted to determine the electrical breakdown strength of cryogenic oxygen. These tests demonstrate the compatibility and safety of typical electrode and support structures under intense electric fields and even under electrical arcs having orders of magnitude more energy than could be experienced in practice. A computer and analysis was used to determine minimum weight system designs based on experimentally verified performance equations, structure weight formulas, and safety criteria. The total weight of the dielectrophoretic electrodes, supports, power supply, and tank feedthrough to orient the liquid in a 25-liter oxygen converter subject to randomly directed accelerations up to 0.001 g is 7 lbs. The operating voltage is 21 kv. A preliminary design is presented for a 25-liter converter system for orbital flight testing. (Author).
