Book Sub cloud Layer Kinematics and Convective Rainfall in Central Illinois

Download or read book Sub cloud Layer Kinematics and Convective Rainfall in Central Illinois written by John L. Vogel and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinematic parameters of divergence and vorticity in the lowest 450 m of the atmosphere were calculated ofr a 750 km area in east central Illinois form wind measurements obtained using pilot balloons. The area for which the analysis has been made is triangular, west of Champaign/Urbana. These and similar data for the surface have been analyzed for nine days of the summer of 1979. Most of the observations were made during the afternoon and early evening hours during periods when tropical air masses overlay the observational network. The maximum surface temperatures on these days ranged from 26.5 to 35 C, and the surface dew-point temperatures varied from 18 to 24 C, approximately normal for temperature but more humid then normal. (The average dew-point for central Illinois is 18 C during July, 17 C in August.) The precipitable water content from the surface to 400 mb ranged from 3.2 to 5.3 cm, higher (by as much as 77% at the extreme) than the normal precipitable water over central Illinois during July or August (Lott, 1976). Book Boundary Layer Structure and Its Relation to Precipitation Over the St Louis Area

Download or read book Boundary Layer Structure and Its Relation to Precipitation Over the St Louis Area written by Gary L. Achtemeier and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainfall, wind and temperature data at the surface and winds in the lower 1-2 km for a mesoscale area surrounding St. Louis, Missouri, for 7 summer days in 1975 were used in a study to determine the relationship between the surface kinematic fields and the occurrence and intensity of rainfall, and to determine if the surface kinematic fields are representative of the subcloud layer. It was found that, on some case days, patterns of convergence collocated favorably with raincells, were predictive of rainfall onset, and were positively related with rainfall amount. However, the relationships were nonexistent or negative on other case days. The statistics support the premise of the predictability of rain amount or rain mass based upon the preceding convergence on the cell scale and on the scale of the network, especially if some method that stratifies the convergence-rainfall relations can be found. Subsynoptic and/or mesoscale disturbances that tend to increase the potential for convective precipitation were present on all 7 case study days. These disturbances formed over the dense St. Louis surface network on three case study days. Although occurring under different synoptic conditions, these systems were similar structurally, being strongest near the surface and extending through a depth of 550 to 750 meters. (Author).

Book Low Level Convergence and the Prediction of Convective Precipitation

Download or read book Low Level Convergence and the Prediction of Convective Precipitation written by Bernice Ackerman and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers at the University of Virginia, the Office of Weather Research and Modification (OWRM) of NOAA (formerly the cumulus group of Hurricane and Experimental Meteorological Laboratory), and the Illinois State Water Survey, have engaged in a collaborative effort to study the relationship between surface convergence and subsequent precipitation from convective clouds in both subtropical marine and mid-latitude continental climates. The overall goal of the research was to increase the understanding of the dynamics involved in the development of convective clouds and in cloud interactions on the mesoscale. More specifically, the research focused on the role of low level and surface convergence in the evolution of precipitating convective systems and on developing methods by which this increased knowledge could be used for nowcasting convective precipitation. The research studies were based both on existing data sets from Florida and the Midwest and on measurements made in a special field project carried out during the second year of the three year project. Book The Relationship Between Low level Convergence and Convective Precipitation in Illinois and South Florida

Download or read book The Relationship Between Low level Convergence and Convective Precipitation in Illinois and South Florida written by Andrew I. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between total area divergence and convective rainfall was examined using surface data collected during the VIN 1979 field experiment in Illinois. The mesonetwork covered an area of 2800 km 2. Total area divergence, an area-averaged quantity, can also be expressed by the line integral of the normal component of the wind around the network boundary. Total area divergence was statistically related to area rainfall based upon the criterion that a convergence event occurred anytime there was a sustained change in total area divergence of less than -1/40000s s-1 for greater than 10 minutes. The difference between initial convergence and maximum convergence was related to total area precipitation associated with the convergence. During the 33-day study, there were 106 convergence events. Forty-four of the events had rainfall, and the average was 1.53 mm per event. The correlation coefficient was -0.50. Other meteorological factors also have an influence on convergence and the production of precipitation such as middle-level moisture, stability, and low-level wind speed which improve the statistical relationships in many instances. Weighted convergence, a subset of total area divergence was also used to develop regression relationships. When compared with south Florida relationships from an earlier investigation, the Illinois results show that the correlation between convergence and rainfall has dropped a tenth in almost all cases.

Book Characterizaton of Convective Systems in Terms of Cloud to Ground Lightning Cloud Kinematics Vertical Structure and Precipitation

Download or read book Characterizaton of Convective Systems in Terms of Cloud to Ground Lightning Cloud Kinematics Vertical Structure and Precipitation written by Tādasa ʻĀlamu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In vast regions of the world, especially over global oceans and sparsely populated land areas, satellite remote sensing is often the only practical mean of observing and tracking storm systems. This study investigates convective system characteristics from an array of remote sensing observations in two distinct convective regions on Earth (USA and Africa). It employs 112-hourly satellite Infrared observations along with cloud-to-ground lightning and hourly radar rainfall fields over US, and satellite radar (PR) and long-range lightning data over Africa. Convective systems are tracked across both the continental US and Africa for different seasons. The properties of Convective Systems (CSs) at their different life stages are investigated in terms of Cloud to Ground (CG) lightning flashes, cloud kinematics, and vertical structure of radar reflectivity. The rate of area expansion at the initiation stage of the convective systems is found a good proxy for the longevity of the storms. Rain Volume (RV) is found to be highly correlated to the convective systems' area extent and number of CG lightning. The correlation varies with the life cycle of storms and season. The convective rain type derived from PR is found to be the dominant rain type in the growth and mature stages of thunderstorms. The vertical precipitation structure derived from PR is also shown to have storm life cycle dependence. Two main satellite rain retrievals: PERSIANN Neural Network algorithm product at 4-km/hourly resolution and NASA's Multi-Satellite Real-Time algorithm product (3B41-RT) at 25-km/hourly resolution are used to investigate storm maturity effects on satellite retrieval error. PERSIANN and 3B41-RT retrievals are compared with radar rainfall at different life stages of the tracked convective systems. The study shows that there is significant life cycle and storm type/duration dependence in the performance of 3B41-RT, while PERSIANN, an algorithm that accounts for cloud type information, exhibits weaker dependence.
