Download or read book THE GERMAN EMPIRE written by Michael Stuermer and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid, concise account of the German Empire, from its proclamation at Versailles in 1871 to its final dissolution, also at Versailles, in 1919. The period of almost half a century from 1871 to 1919 was one of huge upheaval, restlessness and change in Germany. Situated at the crossroads of history and geography, the country under Bismarck was struggling to preserve the predominance of Prussia and its traditional ruling elites, whilst also recognising the importance of modernisation. By the turn of the century Germany had overtaken Britain as the workshop of the world in industry, science, ideas and the arts, with enormous investments being made in these areas. Many people lost or swapped their traditional livelihoods, moved from the countryside to the cities, and embarked on a road to a prosperity unparalleled in Europe. Then in 1914 came the outbreak of the First World War, unleashing one of the greatest catastrophes of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The period of almost half a century from 1871 to 1919 was one of huge upheaval, restlessness and change in Germany. This is a narrative which combines high politics, the history of daily life in Germany during this period and portraits of key figures such as Bismarck, Wilhelm II, Walter Rathenau. It is also an account of the huge revolutions which took place in Germany in industry, the arts and science. It will examine the reasons why the First World War occurred, and, whilst trying to understand what was specifically German about this period of German history, will at the same time not lose sight of the fact that what happened in Germany was part of a sequence of radical changes which were going on more widely in Europe.

Download or read book Audiences of Nazism written by Ulrike Weckel and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces of audience responses to propaganda in the Third Reich are particularly sparse given that the public sphere was so highly regulated. By taking an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to found historical sources of audiences’ responses, the contributions to Audiences of Nazism critically approach the effectiveness of the Nazi media. The volume presents a comprehensive array of case studies including, but not limited to, Jewish responses to anti-Semitic media, personal reports from Nazi party rallies, responses to “degenerate art” exhibitions, and the afterlife of visual documentations of Nazi crimes. It uncovers the target groups of certain Nazi media products; how effective these products were in disseminating propaganda; and their chances to win over readers, listeners, and spectators not yet convinced of Nazism.

Book excerpt: This User’s Guide is a resource for investigators and stakeholders who develop and review observational comparative effectiveness research protocols. It explains how to (1) identify key considerations and best practices for research design; (2) build a protocol based on these standards and best practices; and (3) judge the adequacy and completeness of a protocol. Eleven chapters cover all aspects of research design, including: developing study objectives, defining and refining study questions, addressing the heterogeneity of treatment effect, characterizing exposure, selecting a comparator, defining and measuring outcomes, and identifying optimal data sources. Checklists of guidance and key considerations for protocols are provided at the end of each chapter. The User’s Guide was created by researchers affiliated with AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program, particularly those who participated in AHRQ’s DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions About Effectiveness) program. Chapters were subject to multiple internal and external independent reviews. More more information, please consult the Agency website: www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov)

Download or read book The Mongrel written by Julius Streicher and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mongrel is translated from the original Third Reich book with the title Der Pudelmopsdackelpinscher - literally translatable as The Poodle-Pug-Dachshund-Fox-Terrier (which is also the title of one of the chapters) by Ernst Hiemer. The original illustrations by Willi Hofman - over thirty small black and white sketches - are also included. Nonetheless, this book consists primarily of text, not pictures. Originally published by the Strmer publishing house of Julius Streicher in Nuremberg in 1940, this now rare - and much sought after by collectors - book was aimed at children. It contains a dozen stories about dangerous or harmful animals, each followed by an unflattering comparison to Jewry. These animals include, but are not limited to, hyenas, grasshoppers, blood-suckers, poisonous snakes, tape-worms and bacillus. This book is also rare, even among Third Reich books, in its open call to totally destroy Jewry, and indeed world-wide, as a necessary final step in an inescapable struggle to the death between Jewry and all the non-Jewish folks of the world. Here is a quote from page 50: Enlightenment alone, however, cannot solve the Jewish question. A folk that knows the Jew must also have the strength to ruthlessly act against the world enemy. Just like the snake threat is only then totally removed, if the poisonous snakes are totally cleaned out, so is the Jewish question only then solved, if Jewry is destroyed. Mankind must know that in the Jewish question there is only a hard "either-or"; for: If we do not kill the Jewish poisonous snake, then it will kill us! Softcover. 64pp.
Download or read book Exceptional Fossil Preservation written by David J. Bottjer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most nonscientists are usually aware of fossils, and it is commonly believed that they are extremely rare. In fact, fossils are exceptionally common in many sedimentary rocks and are used extensively in geology for age dating, interpretation of ancient environments, and the discovery of natural resources. However, there is another type of fossil deposit that is truly rare. These rare fossil deposits, called Lagerstätten, preserve the remains of the soft tissues or the articulated skeletal remains of ancient creatures in truly astonishing fine detail. Some of these deposits are world-famous, such as the Burgess Shale, or Solnhofen but there are others dating from many different geological eras from the Paleozoic, up to the Eocene. Recently, a concerted effort has been made to understand the overall significance of these rare fossil deposits. Whereas in the past these deposits were considered novelties, modern researchers are trying to understand what they can tell us about ancient life and environments. New sophisticated techniques (including image and geochemical analyses) are providing enormous new contributions to our knowledge of Lagerstätten sites and to paleobiology in general. This volume describes many of the most famous Lagerstätten locations worldwide and is complete with over 70 superb halftones showing some of these exotic fossils in all their glory. Paleontologists are beginning to understand why such deposits occur, how they have varied since the advent of marine metazoan life, and how their presence effects our understanding of the evolution of life in the Earth's oceans. In this way, the study of Lagerstätten continues to move towards the mainstream of paleobiological, biological, and geological research, and away from its former status as the examination of mere curiosities. All those interested in these beautiful and sometimes enigmatic deposits will want to own this book.
Download or read book The Peptides written by Eberhard Schröder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peptides, Volume II: Synthesis, Occurrence, and Action of Biologically Active Polypeptides focuses on the synthesis of biologically active polypeptides and analogues. The publication first offers information on linear peptides and heterodetic cyclic peptides. Discussions focus on depsipeptides, polycyclic and monocyclic disulfides, naturally occurring biologically active peptides, glandular hormones, and tissue hormones. The text then ponders on homodetic cyclic peptides, including homodetic cyclic homomeric peptide antibiotics, polycyclic biologically active polypeptides, and homodetic cyclic heteromeric peptide antibiotics. The manuscript takes a look at the problems related with the synthesis of biologically active polypeptides, giving emphasis to a number of movements which elaborated on the matter and the advancements of preparative techniques and approaches leading to the purification of intermediates and end products. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the occurrence, synthesis, and action of biologically active polypeptides.
