Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has never been easy to preach about the cross and resurrection of Jesus, but difficulties today are particularly challenging. Hearers ask tough questions of the church and the Christian faith, and they are not satisfied by formulaic answers. People are often suspicious of doctrine and are attracted to a broad but vague or pluralistic spirituality rather than the classical claims of Christianity. In this climate, preachers often see preaching on the central events of the Christian story, the crucifixion and resurrection, as more of a problem than a possibility, more of a burden than a joy. They wonder not only how to preach the "old, old story" of cross and resurrection but whether they should preach these themes at all. This book addresses these concerns and shows preachers how to preach the cross and resurrection in fresh, culturally relevant ways that deepen Christian discipleship. Each chapter shows the relevance of preaching the cross for addressing a particular congregational concern. What has ironically become a stumbling block in the pulpit, the stone that preachers often reject--preaching on the cross and resurrection of Jesus--can serve as the cornerstone for building up the congregation for discipleship in our world.

Book Stumbling Toward Eternity

Download or read book Stumbling Toward Eternity written by Josh White and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live with freedom and abundance as you freshly discover the cross of Jesus through the powerful stories and biblical insights of influential preacher and musician Josh White. “[A] vision of gospel hope.”—John Mark Comer Desperation reverberates at the very center of our anxious age. Despite our fiercest efforts, we never seem to find the meaning, depth, and beauty we long for. Where do we turn? There are so many voices promising happiness and endless ladders for us to climb toward a wholeness we can’t seem to reach. Yet what if what we are looking for has already come down to us? In Stumbling Toward Eternity, writer, pastor, and recording artist Josh White offers confessional stories and theological insights as he interprets the pain of his own past, the complicated “mixture” of the present, and the beautiful uncertainty of the future through the lens of grace. Using crisp and honest prose, he reveals why the most familiar symbol of Christianity—the cross of Jesus—is also the most misunderstood. He shows us why the goal of our desperate existence is not arriving at perfection or success but knowing the crucified Christ. The cross is not something to climb toward status. It is something to die on. It is where illusions die and wounds are healed. The cross is where the crucified God speaks over us words that bring freedom. Freedom from futility. Freedom to live with hope. Freedom to truly love. When we lose and find ourselves in the cross of Jesus, we discover that even the most dissonant notes of life can be redeemed in His song, even as we stumble toward eternity.

Book In Defense of the Cross of Christ

Download or read book In Defense of the Cross of Christ written by Steven Holley and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are enemies of the cross, and who are defenders of the faith? In Defense of the Cross of Christ is a wake-up call to sleeping Christians who keep hitting the conviction snooze button of Gods command for obedience and holiness through His grace that compels us and equips us to personify Jesus in selfless love. In Defense of the Cross of Christ is an uncompromising warning to church leaders who have invaded the church with humanistic thinking and become stumbling blocks for babes in Christ while deceiving others to follow their pernicious ways of iniquity and to rejoice in it. Over a decade in preparation, In Defense of the Cross of Christ is now ready for you. The question is, are you ready for it? I know of no other current author who addresses the issue of iniquity among the body of Christ as clearly and concisely as it is dealt with in this work. Just as importantly, I testify that the words written have the testimony of the Spirit by the demonstration of a life lived by the principles here taught. Corey Dawes, Fathers Honor Ministry With passion and conviction, Steven has presented an excellent defense of the cross. Through Scripture and his insight, the reader is drawn to move away from elementary teachings of Scripture and toward deeper water by allowing the love of Christ to guide every decision of their lives. In Defense of the Cross of Christ is intended for slow digestion so the reader may obtain the full nutrients it contains. Kevin Clouse, pastor and writer, First Church of God

Book Stumbling in Darkness

Download or read book Stumbling in Darkness written by Laura Dawn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-12-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title: "Stumbling in Darkness ~ Separated from God (A journey to the Light) ...is a life summarized. May this book inspire you to seek the LORD God, read His Wordthe Holy Bible, and get to know Him as He reveals Himself to you through the Spirit in Jesus Christ. It is Gods will for all of us to know Him and receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior. In both Testaments God says, I will be their God and they will be My children. (Lev 26:12) - (Rev 21:7) this statement is repeated many times. God desires to have a relationship with each one of us. Hes long suffering patiently waiting for us to come to Him. However, He has a set year, month, day and time when the waiting ends. Take an honest look at yourself and ask do you know the love of God? Do you know Jesus Christ personally? Is your name written in The Book of Life? Are you a slave to addictions, lost in sinful desires? Will you be welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven? Do you put everyone and everything before and above God? We are living in what Scripture calls "the last days" the end of life as we know it. Though it is a world without endas we know itis becoming a memory.
