Book Confronting Biopiracy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Robinson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-02-24
  • ISBN : 1136544119
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Confronting Biopiracy written by Daniel Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Biopiracy' refers either to the unauthorised extraction of biological resources, such as plants with medicinal properties, and associated traditional knowledge from indigenous peoples and local communities, or to the patenting of spurious 'inventions' based on such knowledge or resources without compensation. Biopiracy cases continue to emerge in the media and public eye, yet they remain the source of considerable disagreement, confusion, controversy and grief. The aim of this book is to provide the most detailed, coherent analysis of the issue of biopiracy to date. The book synthesises the rise of the issue and increasing use of the term by activists and negotiators in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), to form a critical understanding of the themes, implications and politics of biopiracy. Taking a case-study based approach, derived from interviews and fieldwork with researchers, government, industry, local farmers, healers and indigenous people, the author sequentially documents events that have occurred in biopiracy and bioprospecting controversies. Implications and ethical dilemmas are explored, particularly relating to work with local communities, and the power relations entailed. Detailing international debates from the WTO, CBD and other fora in an accessible manner, the book provides a unique overview of current institutional limitations and suggests ways forward. Options and solutions are suggested which are relevant for local communities, national governments, international negotiators, NGO and interest groups, researchers and industry.

Book Implementing the Nagoya Protocol

Download or read book Implementing the Nagoya Protocol written by Brendan Coolsaet and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2010 is a major landmark for the global governance of genetic resources and traditional knowledge. The way in which it will be translated into practice will however depend on the concrete implementation in national country legislation across the world. Implementing the Nagoya Protocol compares existing ABS regimes in ten European countries, including one non-EU member and one EU candidate country, and critically explores several cross-cutting issues related to the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in the EU. Gathering some of the most professional and widely acclaimed experts in ABS issues, this book takes a major step towards filling a gap in the vast body of literature on national and regional implementation of global commitments regarding ABS and traditional knowledge.

Book Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology

Download or read book Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific advances over the past several decades have accelerated the ability to engineer existing organisms and to potentially create novel ones not found in nature. Synthetic biology, which collectively refers to concepts, approaches, and tools that enable the modification or creation of biological organisms, is being pursued overwhelmingly for beneficial purposes ranging from reducing the burden of disease to improving agricultural yields to remediating pollution. Although the contributions synthetic biology can make in these and other areas hold great promise, it is also possible to imagine malicious uses that could threaten U.S. citizens and military personnel. Making informed decisions about how to address such concerns requires a realistic assessment of the capabilities that could be misused. Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology explores and envisions potential misuses of synthetic biology. This report develops a framework to guide an assessment of the security concerns related to advances in synthetic biology, assesses the levels of concern warranted for such advances, and identifies options that could help mitigate those concerns.

Book Cowboys Cops Killers and Ghosts

Download or read book Cowboys Cops Killers and Ghosts written by Kenneth L. Untiedt and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Publication of the Texas Folklore Society has something for everyone. The first section features a good bit of occupational lore, including articles on cowboys—both legendary ones and the relatively unknown men who worked their trade day by day wherever they could. You’ll also find a unique, personal look at a famous outlaw and learn about a teacher’s passion for encouraging her students to discover their own family culture, as well as unusual weddings, somewhat questionable ways to fish, and one woman’s love affair with a bull. The backbone of the PTFS series has always been miscellanies—diverse examinations of the many types of lore found throughout Texas and the Southwest. These books offer a glimpse of what goes on at our annual meetings, as the best of the papers presented are frequently selected for our publications. Of course, the presentations are only a part of what the Society does at the meetings, but reading these publications offers insight into our members’ interests in everything from bikers and pioneers of Tejana music to serial killers and simple folk from small-town Texas. These works also suggest the importance of the “telling of the tale,” with an emphasis on oral tradition, as well as some of the customs we share. All of these things together— the focus on tradition at our meetings, the fellowship among members, and the diversity of our research—are what sustain the Texas Folklore Society.

Book Diterpenoids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brandon Jones
  • Publisher : Nova Science Publishers
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9781536106718
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Diterpenoids written by Brandon Jones and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diterpenoids are chemical compounds containing 20 carbon atoms and belong to the terpenoid class. They derive from geranylgeraniol, a C20 precursor, have a C20H32 basic structure, and are composed of four isoprene units. These features make diterpenoids different from simple terpenes, which possess only 10 carbon atoms. A diterpenoid molecule may also include alcohol, phenol, aldehyde, cheton, or acidic functional groups. These compounds are highly lipophilic, odorless, and may possess strong flavours. They are found mainly in fungi and in resins of higher-order plants, as typical products of plant metabolism. This book examines the types, functions and provides new research on diterpenoids.
