Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics has withstood thus far every attempt by experimentalists to show that it does not describe data. We discuss the SM in some detail, focusing on the mechanism of fermion mixing, which represents one of its most intriguing aspects. We discuss how this mechanism can be tested in b-quark decays, and how b decays can be used to extract information on physics beyond the SM. We review experimental techniques in b physics, focusing on recent results and highlighting future prospects. Particular attention is devoted to recent results from b decays into a hadron, a lepton and an anti-lepton, that show discrepancies with the SM predictions — the so-called B-physics anomalies — whose statistical significance has been increasing steadily. We discuss these experiments in a detailed manner, and also provide theoretical interpretation of these results in terms of physics beyond the SM.

Book Searching for New Physics in b sl l Transitions at the LHCb Experiment

Download or read book Searching for New Physics in b sl l Transitions at the LHCb Experiment written by Luca Pescatore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents two analyses of semileptonic b → sl+l− decays using Flavour Changing Neutral Currents (FCNCs) to test for the presence of new physics and lepton flavour universality, and the equality of couplings for different leptons, which on the basis of experimental evidence is assumed to hold in the Standard Model, free from uncertainties as a result of knowledge of the hadronic matrix elements. It also includes the angular analysis of Lambda_b->Lambda mumu decay and the RK* measurement, both of which are first measurements, not yet performed by any other experiment.

Book Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity

Download or read book Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity written by Felix Finster and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a critical discussion of the status and prospects of current approaches in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, in particular concerning gravity. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lectures and discussions at the seventh conference “Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity” which took place in fall 2018 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. In contrast to usual proceeding volumes, instead of reporting on the most recent technical results, contributors were asked to discuss visions and new ideas in foundational physics, in particular concerning foundations of quantum field theory. A special focus has been put on the question of which physical principles of quantum (field) theory can be considered fundamental in view of gravity. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.

Book B Decays

  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book B Decays written by Sheldon Stone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon

Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.

Book A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector written by Lesya Horyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).

Book Study of the B c u2192 J D s and B c u2192 J D s Decays with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Study of the B c u2192 J D s and B c u2192 J D s Decays with the ATLAS Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the decays B+c → J/?D+s and B+c → J/? D*+s are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.9 and 20.6 fb–1 of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies √s=7 TeV and 8 TeV, respectively. Signal candidates are identified through J/? → ?+?– and D(*)+s → ??+(?/?0) decays. With a two-dimensional likelihood fit involving the B+c reconstructed invariant mass and an angle between the ?+ and D+s candidate momenta in the muon pair rest frame, the yields of B+c → J/?D+s and B+c → J/? D*+s, and the transverse polarisation fraction in B+c → J/? D*+s decay are measured.

Book Effective Field Theories in Flavour Physics

Download or read book Effective Field Theories in Flavour Physics written by Thomas Mannel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book constitutes a compact review of the applications of effective field theory methods in flavour physics, with emphasis on heavy quark physics. Some of the relevant applications are discussed to illustrate the method. It covers the full range of theoretical tools related to the application of the effective field theory idea: Starting from the weak interactions as an effective theory derived from the standard model, well-established methods such as heavy quark effective theory, the heavy quark mass expansion and chiral perturbation theory are addressed. Also more recent ideas such as QCD factorization and soft collinear effective theory are outlined. Finally the standard model itself is viewed as an effective theory, allowing a model-independent look at the results of the new physics. The book should be useful for the advanced graduate student as well as for scientists who are interested in the theoretical toolkit used in the context of flavour physics. It is not meant as a complete review of the subject, rather it should be useful as an introduction to the basic ideas.

Book A Search for the Rare Decay B sup 0 to D sub S sup Rho sup

Download or read book A Search for the Rare Decay B sup 0 to D sub S sup Rho sup written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report on a search for the decay B[sup 0] --> D[sub s][sup +][rho][sup -] in a sample of 90 x 10[sup 6] [Upsilon](4S) decays into B meson pairs collected between 1999 and 2001 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e[sup +]e[sup -] collider. No significant excess of signal events above the expected background is observed. The authors set a 90% C.L. limit on the branching fraction B(B[sup 0] --> D[sub s][sup +][rho][sup -]) 1.9 x 10[sup -5]. Assuming a flavor SU(3) symmetry relation between the decays B[sup 0] -- D[sub s][sup +][rho][sup -] and B[sup 0] --> D[sup +][rho][sup -], they set a limit on the ratio of CKM-suppressed to CKM-favored amplitudes r(D[rho])
