Download or read book Swirling Flows and Flames written by Toufik Boushaki and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirl flows are used in a wide range of industrial applications. In non-reacting cases, examples of applications include vortex amplifiers and reactors, heat exchangers, jet pumps, and cyclone separators. In reacting cases, swirlers are widely used in combustion systems, such as gas turbines, industrial furnaces, boilers, gasoline and diesel engines, and many other practical heating devices. Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book CFD Study of Taylor Like Vortices in Swirling Flows

Download or read book CFD Study of Taylor Like Vortices in Swirling Flows written by Sattar Panahandehgar and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirling flows are complex fluid motions that appear in various natural phenomena and man-made devices. Numerous engineering applications such as turbomachinery, jet engine combustion chambers, mixing tanks and industrial burners involve swirling flows. This wide range of applications is due to unique characteristics offered by swirling flows such as increase in mixing rate, heat transfer rate and wall shear stress. In this study the axisymmetric swirling flow behavior in the context of a hybrid rocket engine have been analyzed. While modeling the flow inside a cylindrical chamber using CFD, a similarity with the Taylor vortices instability has been observed. Similar to the classic Taylor-Couette flow system, a secondary flow field in the form of wavy toroidal vortices spaced regularly along the axial direction appear under certain critical conditions. The dimensionless control parameter governing the formation of the Taylor-like vortices is expressed as the ratio of the tangential to axial velocity components.
