Book Study of Photon Correlation Techniques for Processing of Laser Velocimeter Signals

Download or read book Study of Photon Correlation Techniques for Processing of Laser Velocimeter Signals written by William T. Jr Mayo and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work was to provide the theory and a system design for a new type of photon-counting processor for low-level Dual Scatter laser velocimeter (LV) signals which would be capable of both the first-order measurements of mean-flow and turbulence-intensity and also the second order time statistics: cross-correlation, auto-correlation, and related spectra. A general Poisson process model for low-level LV signals and noise which is valid from the photon- resolved regime all the way to the limiting case of non- stationary Gaussian noise was used. Computer simulation algorithms and higher order statistical moment analysis of Poisson processes have been derived and applied to the analysis of photon correlation techniques. A system design using a unique Dual Correlate and Subtract frequency discriminator technique is postulated and analyzed. Expectation analysis indicates that the objective measurements are feasible. Error analysis for the mean-flow case indicates that practical transonic wind tunnel measurements are possible with 100-1000 times less light than is required for burst-counter processors. A system design for a new high-speed photon processor for LV signals is provided.

Book Digital Photon Correlation Data Processing Techniques

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently available laser velocimeter (LV) electronic signal processing techniques are often inadequate for detection of light scattered by small scattering particles which are required for following the fluid motions. Example situations include low pressure and/or high velocity measurements. In other situations detection of larger scattering particles is difficult due to limited system sensitivity. Photon counting techniques offer improved system sensitivity by allowing velocity measurements to be made even when there are insufficient signal photons available to define the classical scattering signal. Such techniques are thus applicable when the presently used classical techniques are not. The objective of this contract was the theoretical and experimental development of a new type of photon-counting processor for low-level dual- scatter LV signal detection. The contract was conducted in three separately funded phases: the first was a mathematical feasibility and preliminary hardware design study for a photon-counting processor; the second was a more detailed study of the statistical nature of low-level LV signals and their effects on low-level signal processing; and the third phase was the detailed design, construction, and demonstration of a new photon counting signal processor for photon resolved laser velocimeter signals. The effort under this contract has resulted in several significant conclusions both theoretical and experimental.

Book Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and Velocimetry

Download or read book Photon Correlation Spectroscopy and Velocimetry written by H. Cummins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the first Capri School on Photon Correlation Spectroscopy held in July 1973 and published earlier in this series (Series B: Physics v.3) a second Capri NATO Advanced Study Institute on this topic was held at the Hotei Luna from 26 July to 6 August 1976. This volume contains the invited lecture courses and seminars and some of the contributed seminars presented at this Institute. Much had happened in the field in the intervening three years and it was the intention of the Organising Committee to build on the previous courses • without detailed repetition of fundamentals. and to extend the coverage widely over the use of photon-correla tion methods for the temporal or spectral analysis of fluctuating light sources. In particular, the rapid expansion of these methods for the measurement of macroscopic motion by Laser Doppler Veloci metry was given special emphasis as is indicated in the title. The members of the Organizing Committee were: E R Pike, RSRE, Malvern, UK } _ Co-directors H Z Cummins, CCNY, New York, USA M Bertolotti, University of Rome, Italy - Local Organiser P Pusey, RSRE, Malvern, UK - Treasurer V DeGiorgio, CISE, Milan, Italy P Lallemand, ENS, Paris, France Pierre de Gennes assisted the Committee during the planning of the Institute but was unfortunately prevented at the last minute from attending.

Book Photon Correlation Techniques in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Photon Correlation Techniques in Fluid Mechanics written by E.O. Schulz-Dubois and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photon correlation is a kind of spectroscopy designed to identify optical frequency shifts and line-broadening effects in the range of many MHz down to a few Hz. The optical intensity is measured in terms of single photon detection events which result in current pulses at the output of photomulti plier tubes. This signal is processed in real time in a special-purpose paral lel processor known as a correlator. The resulting photon correlation func tion, a function in the time domain, contains the desired spectral informa tion, which may be extracted by a suitable algorithm. Due to the non-intrusive nature and the sound theoretical basis of photon correlation, the phenomena under study are not disturbed, and the parameters in question can be precisely evaluated. For these reasons photon correlation has become a valuable and in many instances indispensable technique in two distinct fields. One of these is velocimetry in fluid flow. This includes hydro- and aerodynamic processes in liquids, gases, or flames where the velo city field may be stationary, time periodic, or turbulent, and may range from micrometers per second for motion inside biological cells to one kilometer per second for supersonic flow. The other major field is stochastic particle propagation due to Brownian motion.

Book Laser Systems in Flow Measurement

Download or read book Laser Systems in Flow Measurement written by Tariq Durrani and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now well established that laser flow-measuring systems have important advantages over more conventional techniques both for industrial and laboratory applications. These fundamental advantages are indicated by the enormous research effort which has gone into their development over the last decade and by the number of commercial systems which have become available. Although the field is still developing, the most important theoretical results required for relating the system outputs to the fluid flow parameters have now been formulated and a book on the subject therefore seems timely. In the text we have tried to collect together the most important results both from our own papers and from publications by other authors and to present these in a concise and easily readable form. Emphasis has been placed on the fundamental theory and limitations associated with the various techniques rather than on detailed description of specific systems. We have also included a number of new results on areas such as photon counting in turbulent and periodic flows, frequency domain and time domain analysis of laser Doppler velocimeter signals, effect of background noise on system performance, and on cross-correlation techniques for diffusing flows.

Book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics written by Alain Boutier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.
