Book excerpt: Investigations were carried out to study the relationship of profit function, life production and herd life with reproductive variables and to study the relationship between first lactation and lifetime performance and to estimate the economic returns on the basis of first lactation performance. The least square analysis showed that the differences between the two genetic groups (higher and lower crosses) were significant for all the production and profit traits. Similarly the genetic group did not show significant differences in reproductive raits viz., number of inseminations per conception (1.69 and 1.74), firsst calving interval (423 and 426 days), days open percent (36.66 and 37.13) and weight at first calving (306 and 384 kg). Based on profit per day of lif an open period of 135 days in higher crosses and 134 days in lower crosses were found to be satisfactory. The days dry were optimised at 34.22 percent 26.98 percent, 20.22 percent, 24.84 percent and 24.11 percent, for hrd life, lifetime milk yield, milk yield per day of herd life, lifetime profit and profit per day of herd life in higher crosse, respectively. It was also observed that, one standard deviation decrease in mean days dry percent could maximise all the lifetime production traits in lower crosses. Long herd life was found to be necessary for maximum profit and profit per day of herd life. The age at first calving accounted for little in all the lifetime traits in both higher and lower crosses (3.11 to 5.54 percent and 0.07 to 2.11 percent). Similar observations were made with the weight at first calving. Herd life increased gradually upto first lactation (2500 kg) in lower crosses and 3000 kg in higher crosses. Increase in first lactation increased the lifetime traits. The genetic correlations between first lactation traits and lifetime traits were higher in higher crosses. Th phenotypic corrlations among lifetime traits were positive and significant except the correlations of days dry percent with other lifetime traits.

Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken to compare half breds and 3/4th exotic crosses of holstein brown swiss and jersecy with Zebu in two three and four breed combinations. A total of 730 records of different genetic groups were analysed. Growth reproduction and production traits were analysed. The study revealed that holstein sired crosses showed the highest body weights at different ages and excelled all other genetic groups for all reproduction and production traits. Use of superior sires is called for in crossbreeding programme whatever be the exotic breed under consideration. Halfbreeds proved to be the best for growth production and reproduction characters as compared to 3/4th exotic crosses. Intersemating accompanied by selection at 50 percent level inheritance appears to be an ideal long term breeding policy for crossbred cattle.

Book excerpt: A study related to growth trends of variou body size measures sto evaluate performance based on body size among cross sbred cattle in India is taken. The purebred, exotic and cross breds were from three exotic breeds namely Friesian Red Dane (RD) and Jersey. Body weight (BW) at birth was the maximum for Red Dane type followed by Friesian (Fri) and Jersey (Jrs). The performance was superior among crossbreds with 56-62.5 : Fri. inheritence among Fri. type for FL mg. and other production traits. : The lactation length among purebred RD and purebred Fri. type was found to be of longer duration compared to Fri crossbred groups and both 1/2 and purebred Jerey had the earliest age at first calving (AFC). Both weight and AFC have shown low and negative corelations. To redict FLMY (First lactation milk yield) or LTMP (Life time milk production) it was observed that the mature body size had very little predictive values. The fat corrected milk yield per unit jof mature body size was the highest both for FLMY & LTMP in RD followed by Jer. & Fri. The efficiency of milk production reflecting these dairy values were found to be the highest for 1/2 Fri. followed by 1/2 RD and 1/2 Jersey among cross breds and the opurebred Jer. had the highest dairy merit among exotic.
