Book A Study in Scarlet The Original Classic Edition

Download or read book A Study in Scarlet The Original Classic Edition written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a beautifully-designed new edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel, 'A Study in Scarlet, ' which marked the very first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. This is a high quality book of the original classic edition. It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, finally, back in print. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: 'You mustn't blame me if you don't get on with him, ' he said; 'I know nothing more of him than I have learned from meeting him occasionally in the laboratory. ...Nothing could exceed his energy when the working fit was upon him; but now and again a reaction would seize him, and for days on end he would lie upon the sofa in the sitting-room, hardly uttering a word or moving a muscle from morning to night. ...A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. ...'If I can only find what the fellow is driving at by reconciling all these accomplishments, and discovering a calling which needs them all, ' I said to myself, 'I may as well give up the attempt at once.' ...'There is nothing like first hand evidence, ' he remarked; 'as a matter of fact, my mind is entirely made up upon the case, but still we may as well learn all that is to be learned.'

Book A STUDY IN SCARLET Classic English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Study in Scarlet (1887) marks the debut of the very gifted and eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes, and his close friend and chronicler, Dr. Watson – two of the most well-known characters in crime fiction. It was the first of four novels featuring the duo and was followed by The Sign of the Four (1890) The book itself was amazing and the style of writing also commendable. The story itself sees an ‘unlucky’ Dr. John Watson trying to find a place for himself after returning to England following injury and sickness that has invalided him out of the army medical core. Finding accommodation in the capital to be a little more than he can afford he is introduced by a mutual friend to another in the same situation, the slightly unusual Sherlock Holmes. Although Watson recognizes there is a strangeness to Holmes he is attracted to the man’s observations and eccentricities and the two end up sharing rooms at 221B Baker Street. A STUDY IN SCARLET: Holmes, it would seem is a consulting detective, spending all his time learning bits and pieces from countless disciplines in order to make himself not just good, but one of the best in the field, something that combined with his mind make him excellent. He is aware of his genius but does not feel the need to boast about it, more than happy to let others take credit for his work. It would seem as long as a few people like Watson know and accept the truth then he is happy. Even so, it seems as though he is getting bored of what he is doing, very rarely seeing the need to leave the house to investigate, but when he is presented with a more than the interesting case and with a little cajoling from Watson he begins to investigate what becomes their first case together. The mystery is that of a dead body in an empty house, with no sign of violence, but a message written in blood on the wall in another room brings opens a mystery that seems almost impossible to solve… It goes without saying that Holmes manages to solve it and in an entertaining style. Conan-Doyle is a great storyteller, keeping the reader enthralled and bringing them back again and again so that the pages seem to fly by! The world of which he is writing is modern to him, so there are some lovely touches that help open the world to another time for us. A STUDY IN SCARLET

Book excerpt: A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle Doyle's first published story involving the legendary Sherlock Holmes, arguably the world's best-known detective, and the first narrative by Holmes's Boswell, the unassuming Dr. Watson, a military surgeon lately returned from the Afghan War. Watson needs a flat-mate and a diversion. Holmes needs a foil. And thus a great literary collaboration begins. Watson and Holmes move to a now-famous address, 221B Baker Street, where Watson is introduced to Holmes's eccentricities as well as his uncanny ability to deduce information about his fellow beings. Somewhat shaken by Holmes's egotism, Watson is nonetheless dazzled by his seemingly magical ability to provide detailed information about a man glimpsed once under the streetlamp across the road. Then murder. Facing a deserted house, a twisted corpse with no wounds, a mysterious phrase drawn in blood on the wall, and the buffoons of Scotland Yard-Lestrade and Gregson-Holmes measures, observes, picks up a pinch of this and a pinch of that, and generally baffles his faithful Watson. Later, Holmes explains: "In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backward.... There are few people who, if you told them a result, would be able to evolve from their own inner consciousness what the steps were which led up to that result." Holmes is in that elite group. Conan Doyle quickly learned that it was Holmes's deductions that were of most interest to his readers. The lengthy flashback, while a convention of popular fiction, simply distracted from readers' real focus. It is when Holmes and Watson gather before the coal fire and Holmes sums up the deductions that led him to the successful apprehension of the criminal that we are most captivated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Scarlet, And, the Sign of the Four Two years later, in 1882, after a four months' voyage to the west coast of Africa, he settled down as a medical practitioner at Southsea, in England, Where he remained until 1890. Those were arduous and trying years, in which he Came to regard the calls of the profession he had adopted as interruptions in the real work of his life, and found that the writing of stories was a very Slender prop upon Which to lean for a livelihood. Fifty little cylin ders of manuscript, he says, did I send out during eight years, which described a regular orbit among publishers, and usually came back, like paper boomerangs, to the place that they had started from. All this time he was writing anonymously, and during the ten years of his liter ary apprenticeship, he states that, in spite of unceasing and untiring literary efiort, he never in any one year earned fifty pounds by his pen. Another grievous dis appointment which added to his harassing experience at this period was the disappearance of a long story entitled The Narrative of yohn Smith, upon which he had spent a great deal of pains and time. It was lost in the mails and never heard of again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scarlet Car No old newspaper man can believe that there ever existed such a copy boy as Gallegher, or that a murderer with a finger missing from one hand could escape detection even in a remote country village. Greed would have urged the constable to haul to the calaboose every stranger who wore gloves. But he managed to attach so many accurate details of description to the romance that it leaves as definite an impression of realism as any of Mr. Howells's purposely realistic stories. The scene in the news paper o ice, the picture of the prize-fight, the mix ture of toughs and swells, the spectators in their short gray overcoats with pearl buttons (like most good story-tellers he was strong on the tailoring touch), the talk of cabmen and policemen, the swift ness of the way the story is told, as if he were in a hurry to let his reader know something he had actually seen - create such an impression of truth that when the reader finishes he finds himself pic turing Gallegher on the witness-stand at the murder trial receiving the thanks of the judge. And he wonders what became of this precocious infant, and whether he was rewarded in time by receiving the hand of the sister of the sporting editor in marriage.
