Download or read book Physician s Guide to Arthropods of Medical Importance written by Jerome Goddard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 BMA Medical Book Awards Winner As the importance of medical entomology increases, access to up-to-date, authoritative information also becomes increasingly critical. For nearly 20 years, the award-winning, bestselling Physician's Guide to Arthropods of Medical Importance has established itself as a standard reference in doctors' offices and emergency rooms. Now in its sixth edition, this book maintains its status as the ultimate easy-to-use guide for physicians and other health care providers, public health officials, and pest control professionals who need to identify arthropods, the common signs and symptoms of vector-borne diseases, and the recommended forms of treatment. The book begins by describing the pathologic conditions caused by arthropods and the principles of treating those conditions. It elucidates the rationale behind the various treatment regimes and the underlying principles of controlling the immune response. It covers identification of arthropods and common signs and symptoms of vector-borne disease. The book then provides an alphabetical arrangement of arthropods of medical importance with clearly marked subheadings for easy information access. The author concludes with personal protection methods against arthropods. Now with color pictures throughout, the Sixth Edition’s chapters have been updated with the latest information and current references. Older photographs and line drawings have been replaced with new and improved versions, and the interactive CD-ROM has also been updated with more pictures and videos as well as helpful identification aids, additional reading materials, and web links. This work is the most up-to-date reference on arthropods available. Jerome Goddard recently appeared on The Colbert Report.

Download or read book Enhancing Biological Control written by Charles Hammond Pickett and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management written by Dharam P Abrol and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Pest Management: Current Concepts and Ecological Perspective presents an overview of alternative measures to traditional pest management practices using biological control and biotechnology. The removal of some highly effective broad-spectrum chemicals, caused by concerns over environmental health and public safety, has resulted in the development of alternative, reduced risk crop protection products. These products, less toxic to the environment and easily integrated into biological control systems, target specific life stages or pest species. Predation — recognized as a suitable, long-term strategy — effectively suppresses pests in biotechnological control systems. Integrated Pest Management covers these topics and more. It explores the current ecological approaches in alternative solutions, such as biological control agents, parasites and predators, pathogenic microorganisms, pheromones and natural products as well as ecological approaches for managing invasive pests, rats, suppression of weeds, safety of pollinators, role of taxonomy and remote sensing in IPM and future projections of IPM. This book is a useful resource to entomologists, agronomists, horticulturists, and environmental scientists. - Fills a gap in the literature by providing critical analysis of different management strategies that have a bearing on agriculture, sustainability and environmental protection - Synthesizes research and practice on integrated pest management - Emphasizes an overview of management strategies, with critical evaluation of each in the larger context of ecologically based pest management

Download or read book Ecophysiology of Spiders written by Wolfgang Nentwig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently another book on insect physiology was published. It was restricted to a few focal points as are many of these new insect physiology books, but there was considerable depth in its specialized point of view. We were dis cussing the structure of this book and of insect physiology books, in general, when Prof. Remmert asked me " . . . and what about books on spider physio logy?" Silence. Then I started to explain "oh yes, there is a congress pro ceedings volume on this topic and there is a group with excellent publica tions on another topic . . . ", but I felt that this answer was weak. One can no longer buy the proceedings volume in a bookshop and to read a series of publications on a given topic one must search in a library for a dozen journals. Why is there not a single book on spider physiology comparable with the many books on insect physiology? Are spiders a scientific ivory tower, far from public interest and commercial importance? I do not think so, although spiders are one of the many "forgotten" animal groups which always grew in the shadow of the insects. There are research groups working on spider physiology, there are fascinating phenomena in this animal group and there are plenty of exciting results. Spiders may have been always underresearch ed, but research is progressing. In the last few years, new books have been published, e. g.
