Book excerpt: The research presented in this dissertation focuses on two areas of study: (1) fullerene cocrystallization and structural determination and (2) four-coordinate nickel(II) complexes known to undergo temperature driven conversions from planar to tetrahedral in the solid-state. This dissertation does not cover all the research that was performed in collaboration with other research groups or other members of the Balch-Olmstead lab, however, a full list of publications is provided in Appendix A. Chapter 1 reports the structure of Sc2C2@C[subscript s](hept)-C88, the first crystallographically non-isolated pentagon rule metallic carbide clusterfullerene containing a heptagonal ring. The structure contains 13 pentagons, 32 hexagons, and 1 heptagon. Calculations suggest that the fullerene could be a kinetically trapped species. Chapter 2 compares two related nickel porphyrins, etioporphyrin-I (Etio-I) and octaethylporphyrin (OEP), and their structures when cocrystallized with C70, C70·Ni(Etio-I)·2C6H6 and C70·Ni(OEP)·2C6H6. Etio-I is a modification of OEP, in which four alternating ethyl arms are replaced by methyl substituents. This substitution leads to non-trivial crystallographic consequences. Chapter 3 details the synthesis and characterization of a series of late first-row transition-metal complexes coordinated by a family of a [beta]-diketoamine ligands having the general formula M[C-6H5COCHC(NHR)CH3]2, where M = Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, or Zn2+ and R = CH2CH3 or CH2C6H5. These compounds can have planar or tetrahedral coordination, including two polymorphs of a four coordinate nickel(II) compound, Ni[C6H5COCHC(NHCH2CH3)CH3]2 (Ni(B-Et)2), previously reported to undergo a temperature driven conversion from planar to tetrahedral in the solid state upon heating. Chapter 4 involves the study of another complex known to exhibit planar-tetrahedral isomerism: NiBr2(PEtPh2)2. In our efforts to synthesize the complex, we also synthesized [Ni{SC(PEtPh2)2}Br(PEtPh2)]Br, where ethyldiphenylphosphine cleaved carbon disulfide in the presence of nickel(II) bromide. The nickel complex contains an unprecedented ligand in which two ethyldiphenylphosphine molecules have added to the carbon atom while that carbon atom and the sulfur atom are coordinated to nickel. We have also synthesized a further complex with an analogous ligand, [Ni{SC(P[superscript n]PrPh2)2}Br(P[superscript n]PrPh2)]Br.

The introduction contains an explanation of the layout and approach to the book, which I wrote as an overall survey of the wide variety of biological properties of metal complexes. Hopefully, the reader will see the parallels in mechanisms and behavior, even in different organisms.
