Book CARBIDE FUEL DEVELOPMENT Progress Report Period February 1 1961 to April 30 1961

Download or read book CARBIDE FUEL DEVELOPMENT Progress Report Period February 1 1961 to April 30 1961 written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel Fabrication and Evaluation. Nearly stoichiometric, low nitrogen- content UC was synthesized in the plutonium glove box atmosphere. PuC and PuC- UC preparation studies were initiated by the oxide-carbon reaction. UC with nickel additions lowered required sintering temperatures, improved density over control straight UC samples, but did not improve densities over those obtained previously with UC. Microprobe analysis of niobium and 21/4 Cr- 1 Mo compatibility samples tested 4,000 hr at 820 deg C, showed no uranium penetration. Irradiation Test. The W1-1 capsule containing two clad UC specimens continued operation to 11,000 MW-d/ton by the end of April. The W1-2 capsule was inserted in WTR, but had to be removed after a short time because of a radioactive gas leak. Plutonium Facilities. The facility at The Carborundum Company started operation with plutonium in March. Modifications and maintenance continue to be required and are being completed with minimum effect on experimental work schedules. The major modifications of the facility at NDA, the once-through nitrogen and helium systems, were completed and initial operation is satisfactory. A performance test was initiated prior to operations with plutonium. Design and construction of equipment for the furnace box are in progress. (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FUEL FABRlCATlON AND EVALUATION. The synthesis and fabrication of (UO/ sub 0.95/Pu/sub 0.05/)C/sub 0.98/ test specimens by cold pressing and sintering for out-of-pile property measurements were completed. Theoretical densities of 91% (avg) were obtained without sirtering aid and 96% (avg) with 0.1 wt% nickel sintering aid. Mixed sesquicarbide, ated into pellets 94% of theoretical density. Massive, carbon-stabilized PuO was synthesized by the carbon reduction of the dioxide. The carbon content of the product was 0.14 wt%. The coefficients of expansion of (U/sub 0.95/Pu/sub 0.05/)C/sub 0.098/ with and without nickel sintering aid were measured to 1400 deg C, and found to be 12.2 to 12.6 x 10/sup - 6/DEC. Measurements of melting point and vapor pressure of mixed monocarbides were started by testing standards. Compatibility tests at 593 and 816 deg C were started. Examinarion of results to date show a reaction between (U/sub 0.95/Pu/ sub 0.05/)C/sub 0.98/ and Zircaloy-2, and no reaction with type 316 stainless steel and niobium after 1000 hr at 816 deg C. This is similar to previous results with UC. IRRADIATION TESTS. The assembly of all the irradiation capsules was completed. Ten of the 12 planned specimens of (U/sub 0.8/Pu/sub 0.2/) C/sub 0.95/ are currently operating in the GETR. The longest burnup obtained to date is 13,000 Mwd/ton (avg). (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the UC-PuC powder required for the natural U irradiation specimens, and some of the powder required for the enriched U irradiation specimens was synthesized. All of the natural uranium UC-PuC pellets required were fabrlcated by pressing and sintering, and are being ground to size. The average density of the (U/sub 0.8/Pu/sub 0.2/)C/sub 0.95/ pellets was 12.54 g/cm/ sup 3/ (92.4% of theoretical) and of the (U/sub 0.08/Pu/sub 0.2/)C/sub 0.95/ plus 0.1 wt% Ni pellets was 13.15 g/cm/sup 3 (96.8% of theoretical). Cored pellets were fabricated by pressing and sintering, and the holes are being reamed to size to provide a place for an accurately located central thermocouple. The initial clad irradiation specimens were assembled, and the assembly of the first irradiation capsule was started. The test reactor choice was narrowed to ETR and GETR. The GETR is recommended for at least four of the six capsules. (auth).
