Book excerpt: The dynamics of ion-molecule interactions within a mass selective rf quadrupole ion trap are studied for several ion-molecule systems. Laser induced fluorescence is used as a probe of the internal energy distributions of molecular ions under collision free conditions and under controlled collision conditions. The effects of collisions at near thermal energies (0.3 to 0.5 eV) are easily understood in terms of processes such as charge transfer and other energy transfer mechanisms. The A1PI - X1.sigma. system of CH and CD has been examined under collision free conditions. The ions were produced from methane through electron impact ionization/dissociation. The observed energy distributions reflect the dynamical partitioning of dissociation exothermicity, excepting short lived electronic states. Many new transitions belonging to this electronic system have been observed and a reliable vibrational frequency for the X1.sigma./sup +/ state has been obtained. The radiative lifetimes of CH/sup +/ and CD/sup +/ A1PI(v = 0) states have been measured and a revised oscillator strength for the A-X transition has been derived from this data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference on both the physics and chemistry of laser-induced processes in molecules was organized by the Quantum Electronics Divisional Board of the European Physical Society whose membership is given on p.367. The confer ence aim, to mix physicists and chemists interested in this exciting field both from Europe and further afield, was well fulfilled by the attendance of around 250 participants and the submission of about 100 papers, which dre presented here. Numerous people at both the Physics Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and at the Projektgruppe fUr Laserforschung, MPI, Garching, con tributed hard work to the organization; in addition to Dr. Bob Harrison, who bore the biggest burden with conspicuous success, we particularly thank Hugh MacKenzie, Richard Dennis and last but not least Miss Joanne Askham and the secretaries in Edinburgh together with Frau Doris Maischberger and the secretaries in Garching. Book Crossed Molecular Beam Studies

Download or read book Crossed Molecular Beam Studies written by D. R. Herschbach and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes three of investigations: 1) studies of van der Waals collision dynamics, 2) laser spectroscopy study of rotational vibrational relaxations, and 3) angular correlations in chemical reactions. A cross molecular beam apparatus was used to study several van der Waals bond exchange reactions. These collisions involving extremely weak interactions were found to have product velocity distributions which resemble those from several ion molecular reactions which occur at very high collision energy. This led to the theoretical development of a scattering model which should be applicable to a wide range of reactive and inelastic collision processes at kinetic energies higher than the bond strengths. In another effort, laser induced fluorescence experiments were performed to measure the rotational and vibrational temperatures of molecular iodine seeded in beams of helium, argon, or nitrogen expanded from a supersonic nozzle. The results demonstrated the utility of seeded iodine fluorescence as a diagnostic for pulse shape and collisional relaxation in pulsed supersonic beams. Lastly, theoretical calculations dealing with rotational orientation in molecular collisions resulted in the formulation of a correlation analysis which offers a means to obtain information about collision dynamics that would otherwise be lost by averaging over the initial impact parameters and molecular orientations.

Book Unusual Laser Excitations 5 890 6 520 A of the B2 Sigma Electronic State of CN in an Atmospheric Pressure Flame

Download or read book Unusual Laser Excitations 5 890 6 520 A of the B2 Sigma Electronic State of CN in an Atmospheric Pressure Flame written by J. A. Guthrie and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CN radical plays an important role in the chemistry of nitramine propellant flames. Diagnostic methods for detection of this radical are therefore important for studies of its role in propellant combustion experiments. In this work, CN laser induced fluorescence (LIF) in an atmospheric pressure flame was studied. The first such flame study involving observation of LIF in the strong CN B-X violet system, near 3880 A, but with excitation using strong, fundamental dye laser outputs, near 6000 A, is reported. Excitation at significantly longer wavelengths (smaller photon energy) than LIF observation wavelengths is unusual. Because the high intensity fundamental outputs of dye lasers may be used, these excitations could ultimately prove to be very effective diagnostic methods for this species. Subsequent investigation of the spectra has revealed that at least four distinct excitation processes, some of which involve molecular collisions, are responsible for the observed LIF as the laser is scanned in this region. The observed spectra reveal some of the unexpected effects of collisions and laser intensity on absorption and fluorescence in this molecule.

Download or read book Molecular Collision Dynamics written by J.M. Bowman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph covers a broad spectrum of topics in the very broad field of gas phase molecular collision dynamics. The Introduction previews each of the four fol lowing topics and attempts to sew them together with a common thread. In addition, a brief review of quantum reactive scattering is given there along with some gen eral remarks which highlight the difficulties in doing quantum reactive scatter ing calculations. The chapters are all written by theoreticians who are, of course, experts in the subjects they have written about. Three chapters, the ones by Secrest, Schatz, and the one by Schinke and Bowman deal with non-reactive atom-molecule scattering. Col lectively, they describe nearly the full breadth of scattering methods in use to day, from fully quantum mechanical to semiclassical and quasiclassical. The chapter by Baer is the only one dealing with quantum reactive scattering with the additional complexity of the coupling of two potential energy surfaces. The one simplifying feature of the treatment is that the reaction is constrained to be collinear. Overall, this monograph is mainly a review of the recent advances in the field of molecular collision dynamics, with, however, a considerable amount of new material. It is hoped that workers and students in the field will find reading the mono graph both enlightening and enjoyable.
