Book Equations for the Study of the Energetics of the Larger Scales of Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book Equations for the Study of the Energetics of the Larger Scales of Atmospheric Turbulence written by Barry Saltzman and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By considering the Fourier analysis of the planetary field of motion in the atmosphere it is possible to define "scales" of motion and to write equations which govern the behavior of these separate scales of motion. Specifically, an equation for the rate of change of the kinetic energy of a disturbance of a given wave number is presented. Such an equation, which includes the effects of the release potential energy, friction, and the transfer of energy among the various scales of eddies and the mean flow, can serve as a basis for studying the day-to-day variations of the spectral distribution of kinetic energy and for computing the "steady-state" atmospheric energy cycle in the domain of wave number, with the use of daily hemispheric data

Book Physics of the Atmosphere and Climate

Download or read book Physics of the Atmosphere and Climate written by Murry L. Salby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murry Salby's new book provides an integrated treatment of the processes controlling the Earth-atmosphere system, developed from first principles through a balance of theory and applications. This book builds on Salby's previous book, Fundamentals of Atmospheric Physics. The scope has been expanded into climate, with the presentation streamlined for undergraduates in science, mathematics and engineering. Advanced material, suitable for graduate students and as a resource for researchers, has been retained but distinguished from the basic development. The book provides a conceptual yet quantitative understanding of the controlling influences, integrated through theory and major applications. It leads readers through a methodical development of the diverse physical processes that shape weather, global energetics and climate. End-of-chapter problems of varying difficulty develop student knowledge and its quantitative application, supported by answers and detailed solutions online for instructors.

Book Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity

Download or read book Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity written by Henry E. Fuelberg and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic-scale budgets of kinetic and total potential energy are computed using 3- and 6-h data at nine times from NASA's fourth Atmospheric Variability Experiment conducted on 24-25 April 1975. Two intense squall lines occurred during the period. Energy budgets for areas as small as 8.0 x 1011 m2 that enclose regions of intense convection are shown to have systematic changes that relate to the life cycles of the convection. Some of the synoptic-scale energy processes associated with the convection are found to be larger than those observed in the vicinity of mature cyclones. Volumes enclosing intense convection are found to have large values of cross-contour conversion of potential to kinetic energy and large horizontal export of kinetic energy. Although small net vertical transport of kinetic energy is observed, values at individual layers indicate large upward transport. Transfer of kinetic energy from grid to subgrid scales of motion occurs in the volumes. Latent heat release is large in the middle and upper troposphere and is thought to be the cause of the observed cyclic changes in the budget terms. Total potential energy is found to be imported horizontally in the lower half of the atmosphere, transported aloft, and then exported horizontally. Although local changes of kinetic energy and total potential energy are small, interaction between volumes enclosing convection with surrounding larger volumes is quite large. Spatial fields of terms in the energy budget equations are shown at three times. These have good continuity and are closely related to the locations and intensities of the two squall lines.

Book A Mathematical Theory Of Large scale Atmosphere ocean Flow

Download or read book A Mathematical Theory Of Large scale Atmosphere ocean Flow written by Michael John Priestley Cullen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-01-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book counteracts the current fashion for theories of “chaos” and unpredictability by describing a theory that underpins the surprising accuracy of current deterministic weather forecasts, and it suggests that further improvements are possible. The book does this by making a unique link between an exciting new branch of mathematics called “optimal transportation” and existing classical theories of the large-scale atmosphere and ocean circulation. It is then possible to solve a set of simple equations proposed many years ago by Hoskins which are asymptotically valid on large scales, and use them to derive quantitative predictions about many large-scale atmospheric and oceanic phenomena. A particular feature is that the simple equations used have highly predictable solutions, thus suggesting that the limits of deterministic predictability of the weather may not yet have been reached. It is also possible to make rigorous statements about the large-scale behaviour of the atmosphere and ocean by proving results using these simple equations and applying them to the real system allowing for the errors in the approximation. There are a number of other titles in this field, but they do not treat this large-scale regime.
