Book excerpt: - Discusses the most advanced techniques for diamond growth - Assists diamond researchers in deciding on the most suitable process conditions - Inspires readers to devise new CVD (chemical vapor deposition Ever since the early 1980s, and the discovery of the vapour growth methods of diamond film, heteroexpitaxial growth has become one of the most important and heavily discussed topics amongst the diamond research community. Kobashi has documented such discussions with a strong focus on how diamond films can be best utilised as an industrial material, working from the premise that crystal diamond films can be made by chemical vapour disposition. Kobashi provides information on the process and characterization technologies of oriented and heteroepitaxial growth of diamond films.

Book Non Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes

Download or read book Non Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes written by Nong Moon Hwang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to a recently-developed approach to the growth mechanism of thin films and nanostructures via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Starting from the underlying principles of the low pressure synthesis of diamond films, it is shown that diamond growth occurs not by individual atoms but by charged nanoparticles. This newly-discovered growth mechanism turns out to be general to many CVD and some physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes. This non-classical crystallization is a new paradigm of crystal growth, with active research taking place on growth in solution, especially in biomineralization processes. Established understanding of the growth of thin films and nanostructures is based around processes involving individual atoms or molecules. According to the author’s research over the last two decades, however, the generation of charged gas phase nuclei is shown to be the rule rather than the exception in the CVD process, and charged gas phase nuclei are actively involved in the growth of films or nanostructures. This new understanding is called the theory of charged nanoparticles (TCN). This book describes how the non-classical crystallization mechanism can be applied to the growth of thin films and nanostructures in gas phase synthesis. Based on the author’s graduate lecture course, the book is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in the field of thin film and nanostructure growth or crystal growth. It is hoped that a new understanding of the growth processes of thin films and nanostructures will reduce trial-and-error in research and in industrial fabrication processes.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Diamond Thin Films by Microwave Plasma enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition MPECVD

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Diamond Thin Films by Microwave Plasma enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition MPECVD written by Shih-Feng Chou and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diamond thin films are deposited on silicon wafers by MPECVD process with the presence of methane, argon, and hydrogen gases. The reaction chamber is designed with an internal microwave reaction cavity and a high-pressure pocket for improving deposition conditions. Scanning electron microscopy reveals tetrahedral and cauliflower-shaped crystals for polycrystalline diamond and nanocrystalline diamond films, respectively. Spectroscopy ellipsometer studies indicate that diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are deposited with a thickness of 700 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows C-H stretching in the range from 2800 cm -1 to 3000 cm -1 . Nanoindentation is performed on DLC films with an average hardness of 10.98 GPa and an average elastic modulus of 90.32 GPa. The effects of chamber pressure, microwave forward power, and gas mixture on the plasma chemistry are discussed. Substrate temperature has a significant influence on film growth rate, and substrate pretreatment can enhance the quality of diamond films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the hollow carbon buckminsterfullerene molecule as well as methods to produce and purify bulk quantities of it has triggered an explosive growth of research in the field. Superconducting and magnetic fullerides, atoms trapped inside the fullerene cage, chemically bonded fullerene complexes, and nanometer-scale helical carbon tubes are some of the leading areas that have generated much excitement. This book is intended as a guide to the literature for the scientist who is just entering fullerene research, and will be one more valuable volume to the collection for the established worker. It contains reprints of some sixty most important research papers, with focus especially on those papers that have guided further work in the field. There is also a short review of the field, with references to many other publications.

Book Nucleation and Growth of Diamond on Carbon Implanted Single Crystal Copper

Download or read book Nucleation and Growth of Diamond on Carbon Implanted Single Crystal Copper written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleation and growth of diamond crystals on single crystal copper surfaces has been studied. Microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) was used for diamond nucleation and growth. Prior to diamond nucleation, the single crystal copper surface is modified by carbon ion implantation at an elevated temperature ( -820 C). This procedure leads to the formation of a graphite film on the copper surface, resulting in the great enhancement of diamond crystallite nucleation. A simple lattice model has been constructed to describe the mechanism of diamond nucleation on graphite as 111 parallel to 0001 and 110 parallel to 1120. This leads to a good understanding of diamond growth on carbon-implanted copper surfaces.

Book Diamond Thin Films An Emerging Technology Past Present and Future

Download or read book Diamond Thin Films An Emerging Technology Past Present and Future written by Ashok Kumar Dua and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2004-08-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diamond, as well as being a precious gem, is a versatile material par excellence. No other material comes anywhere near to matching its properties, which are both extreme, and also expressed in rare combinations. However, natural diamonds, and those synthesised under high sandpressure temperatures, are too expensive or small for many technological applications. These limitations can be overcome by using large-area diamond coatings; chemically bonded to inexpensive non-diamond surfaces. The consequent economic advantages provide the driving force for much diamond-related research and technology.

Book Mechanism for Diamond Nucleation and Growth on Single Crystal Copper Surfaces Implanted With Carbon

Download or read book Mechanism for Diamond Nucleation and Growth on Single Crystal Copper Surfaces Implanted With Carbon written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleation and growth of diamond crystals on single crystal copper surfaces implanted with carbon ions has been studied. Microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition was used for diamond growth. The single crystal copper substrates were implanted either at room temperature or at elevated temperature ( -820 degC) with carbon ions prior to diamond nucleation. This procedure leads to the formation of a graphite film on the copper surface which greatly enhances diamond crystallite nucleation. From our study we construct a simple lattice model for diamond growth on graphite as 111 parallel to 0001 and 110 parallel to 1120. Nucleation, Diamond growth mechanism, Carbon-implanted, Copper crystals.
