It occurs in two general styles of kernel, the one rice-shaped with a pointed end and the other flat with rounded end. Both are small and hard. The flint type is characterized by its hardness of kernel with a rounded top and a small area of soft endosperm.around the embryo completely surrounded by corneous endosperm. The dent type is char acterized by wedged-shaped kernels with an indented top and the soft endo sperm extending to the top with corneous material confined mainly to the sides of the kernel. In the flour or soft maize type the endosperm is entirely of a soft starchy character, In shape and outward appearance it is similar to flint corn but varies in size from not much larger than grains of pop maize to nearly an inch long. Sweet maize is that type in which the endosperm is translucent and horny in appearance, the starch being partially replaced by sugar. In the pod type of maize each grain is covered with a beer, in addition to the ear itself being so covered. Its kernels vary greatly in size and shape. The farm papers of 1819 to 1822 tell of several instances of getting Maha (undoubtedly Omaha Indian) corn from Council Bluffs - now a part of Iowa. This corn was an eight-row soft corn type, and several of the eastern farmers claimed yields of more than 100 bushels to the acre. The Sioux yellow, ten to twelve-row flint corn was introduced from the west by several grow ers, and there were several introductions of a Canadian flint corn. These introductions, together with the local varieties, are probably found to some extent in all of our present-day varieties, and help to explain the heterogeneous nature of our present-day types. The Iowa State Agricultural Society report of 1858 says: A great. Many varieties of corn are cultivated, and it would be hard to tell which is the best, as farmers entertain different Opinions. Per acre or more, the largest average yield being 80 bu. Of the yellow varieties, Learning, Fisk, legal tender, Clark's Iroquois, and Riley's favorite are medium maturing, and will be found desirable for central Illinois. Steward's improved is too late for this locality. Mur dock and Edmonds are early maturing, and may be grown farther north. Of white varieties, Champion white pearl or Burr's white, and Clark's 110-day are medium maturing and desirable for central Illinois. Helms improved is almost too late for this locality. The stand of corn has been about 10 per cent. Less than the per cent. Of kernels sprouting under test conditions. Barrenness does not seem to be a variety characteristic, but depends largely upon the season and the thickness of planting. The stalks had many more ears in 1889 than in 1888 and 1890. There were fewer bar ren stalks where corn was planted at the ordinary rate of kernels per acre than at either thicker or thinner planting. When four times as many kernels were planted, one-half the stalks were barren. Without exception the medium maturing varieties (maturing about September 20th) have given each year a higher average yield than either the early or late maturing varieties - from 7 to 20 bu. It was soft, ductile, tenacious, elastic, insipid, nearly inodorous, and heavier than water. When heated, it swelled, became brown, exhaled the Odor of burning bread, melted with the smell of animal matter, and left a voluminous charcoal. It burnt in the flame of a lamp, but not rapidly. When distilled, no ammonia seemed formed. It was insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol, oil of turpentine, and sulphuric ether, and sparingly in mineral acids and caustic alkalies. It was insoluble in fixed oils, but mixed with resin. The quantity obtained from 100 grains was three grains.
