Book Advances in Lipid Research

Download or read book Advances in Lipid Research written by Rodolfo Paoletti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Lipid Research, Volume 22 provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of lipid research. This book covers a variety of topics, including lipid secretion, lipids in platelet function, lipid transfer proteins, serum cholesterol, and cholesterol metabolism. Organized into five chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the lipid secretion of the meibomian glands, with emphasis on its chemical composition and physical properties. This text then explains the influence of lipids in platelet function and considers the metabolism of arachidonic acid in disease states, such as diabetes, nephrosis, and atherosclerosis. Other chapters examine the manner in which dietary cholesterol contributes to regulation of cholesterol metabolism. This book discusses as well the identification, isolation, and metabolism of sterol carrier proteins and lipid transfer proteins. The final chapter deals with the underlying problems that militate against a simple dose–response relationship. This book is a valuable resource for biologist, biochemists, and clinicians.

Book Cholesterol Metabolism LDL and the LDL Receptor

Download or read book Cholesterol Metabolism LDL and the LDL Receptor written by N Myant and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cholesterol Metabolism, LDL, and the LDL Receptor focuses on the cholesterol biochemistry and lipoprotein metabolism. This book is organized into 10 chapters that describe the coordinated actions of three regulated processes, namely, the intracellular synthesis of cholesterol, its esterification by ACAT, and the receptor-mediated uptake of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), for optimal level of free cholesterol. The first five chapters explore the various aspects of cholesterol biology, including discussions on the interaction of ligands with their cell-surface receptors; the role of coated pits in the endocytosis of receptor-bound ligands; and the recycling of receptors through the interior of the cell. These chapters also examine the regulation of gene expression encoding inducible proteins and the use of natural and synthetic mutations in studies of the functions of the separate domains of a multifunctional protein. A chapter describes the cloning of the apoB gene, the receptor-binding domain of apoB-100, and the unusual mode of derivation of apoB-48. Considerable chapters are devoted to LDL receptor and its pathway. The concluding chapter deals with the clinical consequences of genetic dysfunction of the LDL receptor, with particular emphasis on the diagnostic and treatment approaches of familial hypercholesterolemia that are based wholly or in part on knowledge of the LDL receptor or its gene. This book is an indispensable guide for biologists, physiologists, and clinicians who are interested in the epidemiological field of cholesterol and heart attacks.

Book Disorders of Lipid Metabolism

  • Author : G.V. Marinetti
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461595649
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Disorders of Lipid Metabolism written by G.V. Marinetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past 30 years I have been teaching lipid biochemistry to'inedical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The major topics covered in my courses were fatty acids, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, phospholipids, glyco lipids, triacylglycerols, cholesterol, bile acids, and plasma lipoproteins. Empha sis was placed on the regulation and disorders of lipid metabolism. The latter included hyperlipidemias, atherosclerosis, and alcohol-induced liver damage. In this volume, I have chosen to focus on the disorders of lipid metabolism at a level appropriate both for medical students and for graduate and undergradu ate students majoring in the biological sciences. The biochemistry, nutrition, genetics, and cell biology aspects of lipids and lipid metabolism will be covered as they relate to lipid disorders. I am not aware of any textbook that integrates the disorders of lipid metabolism in this manner. Chapter 1 includes a brief discussion of the basic structures, properties, and metabolism of lipids. This chapter is not very detailed, since the material covered is available in basic textbooks on biochemistry. The major fpcus of this volume is the various lipid disorders, with emphasis on polyunsaturated fatty acids, the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the hyperlipidemias, dietary and drug therapy for the hyperlipidemias, and alcohol-induced liver damage. The material presented has been obtained from several textbooks on biochemistry and from a variety of recent articles in the scientific literature.
