Book Studies in the Perforation of Thin Metallic Plates by Projectile Impact I Normal Impact of Circular Cylinders

Download or read book Studies in the Perforation of Thin Metallic Plates by Projectile Impact I Normal Impact of Circular Cylinders written by L. E. Fugelso and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ballistic parameters were determined analytically and experimentally for the perforation of aluminum alloy and titanium alloy plates by normal impact of steel cylinders. Analytical predictions of the perforation parameters were prepared on the basis of theoretical models of the perforation process. Experimental determination of the critical perforation and residual velocities discriminated among the various models and further experimentation verified the analytical description of the perforation process. One model of perforation was found which adequately describes the ballistic parameters for the normal impact of steel cylinders into aluminum alloy and titanium alloy plates for impact velocities up to 5000ft/sec and plate thicknesses up to 0.25 inches.

Book excerpt: This unique compendium contains a vast systematized data of 14,000 experiments on high-velocity penetration into metals, concrete, reinforced concrete, and geological media which were published in the open literature (journal papers, reports, conference proceedings) during the last 70 years. Data presented in this edition are related to the initial and final stages of penetration and include: parameters which characterize mechanical and geometric properties of the striker and the shield; striking and residual velocities of projectile or depth of penetration; changes of mass and size of projectile; angles that determine the initial and residual position of the projectile; ballistic limit velocity; basic characteristics of plug and deformation of the shield.Unified form of data representation and common notations are used throughout the book. All information is presented in numerical form in SI units. The book also contains indices which allow a fast search of the authors' publications and related experiments. Theoreticians, design engineers and experimentalists will find this handbook a valuable reference material.

Book Engineering Models In High speed Penetration Mechanics And Their Applications In 2 Volumes

This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 1116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume, 1100 pages, 38 chapters book is a significantly expanded, revised and updated version of the monograph by the authors published in 2013 (Ben-Dor, G, Dubinsky, A, Elperin, T, 'High Speed Penetration Dynamics: Engineering Models and Methods,' Singapore: World Scientific Publishing Company). The contents increased by 60%, the number of titles in bibliography doubled and reached 1600; and the scope covers a range of new topics related to hypervelocity penetration, along with high-speed impact.Presented material is structured into two parts. The first part includes description and analysis of practically all known engineering models for calculating high-speed penetration of projectiles into concrete, metals, geological shields, adobe, and gelatine. The second part focuses on the use of approximate models for solving conventional and non-standard problems of penetration mechanics including prediction and optimization of protective properties of monolithic and multi-layered shields against high-speed projectiles and space debris; shape optimization of high-speed projectiles penetrating into various media; modelling of penetration and optimal control of penetrators equipped with jet thrusters; and investigation of the efficiency and optimization of segmented projectiles. The book includes comprehensive overviews on basic classes of problems in high-speed penetration mechanics. This is a indispensable reference guide for scientists, engineers, and students specializing in the field of high-speed and hypervelocity penetration mechanics.

Book Normal Impact and Perforation of Thin Plates by Hemispherically Tipped Projectiles I Analytical Considerations

Download or read book Normal Impact and Perforation of Thin Plates by Hemispherically Tipped Projectiles I Analytical Considerations written by N. Levy and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint is about a very elementary analysis of the penetration and performation processes involved in normal impact of thin plates by hemispherically-tipped cylindrical hard-steel projectiles. It is principally directed towards the determination of the force and central plate deflection histories both below and above the ballistic limit. These parameters are considered to be two of the most important facets of the event, and they can be evaluated rapidly and with negligible computational cost. The theory is based on a lumped-parameter system that includes the radial variation in axial target displacement and is completely predictive below the ballistic limit, but requires either measured information from the plug separation process or corresponding reasonable geometric and kinematic assumptions for a solution in the perforation domain. Surprisingly, considering the simplicity of the theoretical approach, the calculated values were found to be in excellent agreement below and in reasonable correspondence above the ballistic limit with data for soft aluminum targets. Somewhat greater deviations between predictions and measurements for mild steel plates are attributed to the neglect of rate effects in the constitutive description of this material. In spite of the existence of a variety of more complicated phenomenological representations, the current model appears to be the only one that forecasts the drop in peak force upon initiation of perforation and the subsequent simultaneous motion of plug and target plate; both of these features were verified by experiment. Keywords: Impact tests; Perforations; Thin plates; Steel plates.

Book Hypervelocity Impact Phenomena

Download or read book Hypervelocity Impact Phenomena written by Karl R. Becker and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parameters governing the failure of thin metal plates under the impact of high-speed fragments are being studied; special emphasis is placed on the lightweight structural alloys. The geometrical features of the perforations, together with the spatial, mass, and velocity distributions of the ejecta produced in the perforation process, are considered. A few select target materials e.g., Al and Pb are currently being investigated under impact conditions that involve the same projectile geometry but different impact velocities. (Author).

Book The Effect of Projectile Shape on the Ballistic Perforation of Thin Metal Plates

Download or read book The Effect of Projectile Shape on the Ballistic Perforation of Thin Metal Plates written by Thomas E. Fields and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of projectile shape on thin target perforation was investigated for five projectile shapes impacting aluminum and steel targets at 506 m/sec. A discarding sabot technique was developed for launching the unjacketed steel projectiles and accurate perforation velocity losses were measured using a ballistic pendulum with the targets mounted in the center of the pendulum. The five projectile shapes included two pointed ogives, a shape similar to a Russian 14.5 mm AP core, a cylinder and a cone. The two ogive shapes were the most efficient penetrators while the velocity loss of the Russian projectile averaged 15% higher. The cone, which caused a combined petaling and plugging target failure, was the least effective shape. Calculations with two approximate perforation theories predicted smaller velocity losses than were found experimentally. (Author).

Book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence

Download or read book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence written by R. T. Sedgwick and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical, numerical and experimental results are compared in a systematic investigation of the effects of projectile shaped on thin plate perforation. The analysis of five low velocity impact involving optimal-, ogival-, Russian-, conical- and cylindrical-head projectile comprise the study. A three-way comparison of simple perforation theory predictions, HELP numerical solutions and available experimental data is made for the five problems. The HELP solutions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Although the simple perforation formulas are sensitive to projectile shape, they do not provide adequate residual energy predictions. Further numerical studies of this type should provide additional insight into the penetration process and eventually lead to improved perforation formulas. (Author).
