Download or read book Insects at Low Temperature written by Richard Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of insects at low temperature is a comparatively new field. Only recently has insect cryobiology begun to mature, as research moves from a descriptive approach to a search for underlying mechanisms at diverse levels of organization ranging from the gene and cell to ecological and evolutionary relationships. Knowledge of insect responses to low temperature is crucial for understanding the biology of insects living in seasonally varying habitats as well as in polar regions. It is not possible to precisely define low temperature. In the tropics exposure to 10-15°C may induce chill coma or death, whereas some insects in temperate and polar regions remain active and indeed even able to fly at O°C or below. In contrast, for persons interested in cryopreservation, low temperature may mean storage in liquid nitrogen at - 196°C. In the last decade, interest in adaptations of invertebrates to low temperature has risen steadily. In part, this book had its origins in a symposium on this subject that was held at the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in December, 1988. However, the emergence and growth of this area has also been strongly influenced by an informal group of investigators who met in a series of symposia held in Oslo, Norway in 1982, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1985 and in Cambridge, England in 1988. Another is scheduled for Binghamton, New York, USA (1990).

Download or read book Entomology and the Law written by Bernard Greenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Used particularly when there has been a suspicious death, insect-related evidence is one of the most powerful, but least understood examples of modern forensic science. Entomology and the Law provides a detailed roadmap that can be followed from crime scene to courtroom by entomologists, law enforcement personnel and lawyers preparing for trial. Part I focuses on carrion flies as forensic indicators, exploring relevant biology clearly and concisely illustrated by real-life cases. Flies are usually first on the scene of a death, and knowledge of their habits and lifestyles can help to reveal time of death, weeks or even years later. Part II provides a thorough examination of the law of scientific evidence worldwide, complete with caselaw and applicable code provisions, and legal issues relevant to the admissibility and use of forensic entomology in litigation. It will prepare both scientists and lawyers for real-world forays into the world of forensic entomology.
Download or read book The Natural History of Blackflies written by Roger W. Crosskey and published by . This book was released on 1990-11-28 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of blackflies has come of age--the blackfly is now recognized as a carrier of major endemic diseases; its larval stages are seen to play a major role in the ecology of rivers and streams; and blackfly chromosomes have proved unusually amenable material for cytogenetical studies. The expanded interest in the blackfly has greatly increased the scientific literature about them--literature that is extremely technical, highly specialized, and often of little help to non-specialists. This work bridges the gap between specialists and those whose work brings them in contact with the blackfly, but who need information at a more general level. It synthesizes present knowledge about the natural history of the fly family Simuliidae, covering taxonomic background, elements of larval structure and life in water, adult fly structure, migration, mating, biting and bloodsucking, human diseases, and natural enemies of larval and adult flies. Over 1200 bibliographic citations, a glossary of technical terms, and numerous figures, tables and illustrations are included.

Download or read book Himalayan Gazetteer written by Edwin T. Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 2631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalayas have captivated the imagination and interest of humankind for centuries. The more we explore, the more we learn. India's rich history, society, and culture, are deeply influenced by the world's tallest mountain range. After all, before modern travel, the Himalayas were the most important gateway to India, for people, goods and ideas. This rare and invaluable record of the youngest mountain range in the world is back in print after a century. The extensively detailed information on every district, food habits, customs, influences, as well as the people and their vocations will provide a new perspective to a whole new generation of young readers. The aim of this publication is to make Atkinson's rich data accessible once again to researchers so that we can continue to refer to this rich source of information in our continued work to conserve the rich natural resources and ecological heritage of the Himalayas which stand frighteningly threatened by fast paced and largely unplanned development.
