Book excerpt: Reexamining the roles played by author, reader, scribe, and text in medieval literary practice, John Dagenais argues that the entire physical manuscript must be the basis of any discussion of how meaning was made. Medievalists, he maintains, have relied too heavily on critical editions that seek to create a single, definitive text reflecting an author's intentions. In reality, manuscripts bear not only authorial texts but also a variety of elements added by scribes and readers: glosses, marginal notes, pointing hands, illuminations, and fragments of other, seemingly unrelated works. Using the surviving manuscripts of the fourteenth-century Libro de buen amor, a work that has been read both as didactic treatise on spiritual love and as a celebration of sensual pleasures, Dagenais shows how consideration of the physical manuscripts and their cultural context can shed new light on interpretive issues that have puzzled modern readers. Dagenais also addresses the theory and practice of reading in the Middle Ages, showing that for medieval readers the text on the manuscript leaf, including the text of the Libro, was primarily rhetorical and ethical in nature. It spoke to them directly, individually, always in the present moment. Exploring the margins of the manuscripts of the Libro and of other Iberian works, Dagenais reveals how medieval readers continually reshaped their texts, both physically and ethically as they read, and argues that the context of medieval manuscript culture forces us to reconsider such comfortable received notions as "text" and "literature" and the theories we have based upon them.

In distinct ways, this collection takes a multi-ethnic and multi-modal approach, departing from sociologist Maurice Halbwachs' premise that collective memories form not within individuals alone, but through the inner and inter-workings of actual and conceptual social milieux. The volume hereby foregrounds the constitutive roles of communities created through prayer, literary resonances, architecture, musical performance, and name giving, in shaping memories of medieval Spanish contexts as well as complex identities in the Balkans, the Near and Middle East, North Africa, Latin American, and the United States. Book excerpt: Scholarship on the late medieval and early modern Castilian frontier ballad has tended to fall into two distinct categories: analyses which promote a view of the fronterizo corpus as an instrument of anti-Muslim, nationalist ideology in the service of the Christian Reconquest, or interpretations which favour the perception of the poems as idealizing and distinctly Islamophile in their representations of Granadan Muslims. In this study, Şizen Yiacoup offers readings of the romances fronterizos that take into consideration yet look beyond expressions of cross-cultural hostility or sympathy in order to assess the ways in which the poems recall a process of cultural exchange between Christians and Muslims. An understanding of the relationship between the ballads, their original social setting, and the setting in which they achieved their greatest popularity provides the framework for this interpretation of the poems’ shifting cultural connotations. Accordingly, Yiacoup traces the evolution of their historical and cultural significance as they moved from their origins in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when a Castilian frontier with Islamic Granada was still a reality, into the sixteenth, when this boundary vanished as part of the larger realignment of cultural, territorial and political frontiers of the new ‘Spanish’ empire.
