Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Honor of Basil L. Gildersleeve Critical investigation of the four Gospels and the Book of Acts in recent years has thrown a flood of light upon the origin of Christianity. I propose in this article to use this light in a study of the Apostolic Commission. Early in his ministry Jesus called Simon to leave all and follow him (Mk. i. 16-20). He named him Peter, the rock, as the foremost of the disciples, their chief and spokesman. The Gospels differ as to the time of this naming: Mk. iii. 16; Mt. x. 2, xvi. 17-19; Lk. vi. 14; John i. 40-42; but a critical study of these passages makes it probable that it did not take place until late in Jesus' ministry, when his Messiahship was recognized by the Twelve. Jesus also called James and John, who with Simon constituted the innermost circle of the Twelve, to whom Jesus entrusted the highest privileges. Next to these was Andrew. Levi (Matthew) also had a special call. Seven others with these five were selected from the body of the disciples (Mk. iii. 14-19) to constitute the Twelve, who were constantly with Jesus as his companions in his ministry. There can be little doubt that St. Peter was the chief of the Twelve and that there was a primary group of four - Peter and Andrew, James and John. Philip was first of the second group, composed of Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas. The third group was James, son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot. These three groups constituted the Twelve, who were sent forth in pairs, with authority from Jesus to preach, and teach, and heal during his ministry (Mk. vi. 7-13 = Mtth. x. 1 seq. = Lk. ix. 1 seq.). The four lists vary somewhat in the order of the names within the groups; but in no case in the four lists of Mk., Mtth., Lk. and Acts is there any change of the names out of the three groups. Book Politeness and Politics in Cicero s Letters

Download or read book Politeness and Politics in Cicero s Letters written by Jon Hall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politeness and Politics in Cicero's Letters presents a fresh examination of the letters exchanged between Cicero and correspondents, such as Pompey, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony during the final turbulent decades of the Roman Republic. Drawing upon sociolinguistic theories of politeness, it argues that formal relationships between powerful members of the elite were constrained by distinct conventions of courtesy and etiquette. By examining in detail these linguistic conventions of politeness, Jon Hall presents new insights into the social manners that shaped aristocratic relationships. The book begins with a discussion of the role of letter-writing within the Roman aristocracy and the use of linguistic politeness to convey respect to fellow members of the elite. Hall then analyzes the deployment of conventionalized expressions of affection and goodwill to cultivate alliances with ambitious rivals and the diplomatic exploitation of "polite fictions" at times of political tension. The book also explores the strategies of politeness employed by Cicero and his correspondents when making requests and dispensing advice, and when engaging in epistolary disagreements. (His exchanges with Appius Claudius Pulcher, Munatius Plancus, and Mark Antony receive particular emphasis.) Its detailed analysis of specific letters places the reader at the very heart of Late Republican political negotiations and provides a new critical approach to Latin epistolography.

Book Biblical Translation in Chinese and Greek

Download or read book Biblical Translation in Chinese and Greek written by Toshikazu S. Foley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study integrates three independent subjects - translation theory, Mandarin aspect, and Greek aspect - for the purpose of formulating a working theory applicable to translating the Bible. The primary objectives are defined in terms of grammatical translation of Greek aspect into Mandarin aspect at the discourse level. A historical overview of the Chinese Bible is provided as a way of introducing major translation issues related to linguistic, conceptual, and logistical challenges. The proposed theory provides the translator with a powerful tool, which is tested in two sample passages from John 18-19 and 1 Corinthians 15. Provided, also, are critical reviews of over sixty Chinese Bible versions, Nestorian, Manichaean, Catholic documents, and a translation written according to the proposed theory.

Book Jacob Wackernagel Lectures on Syntax

Download or read book Jacob Wackernagel Lectures on Syntax written by David Langslow and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an English version of two series of highly acclaimed introductory lectures given by the great Swiss linguist and classical philologist Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938) at the University of Basle in 1918-19 on aspects of Greek, Latin, and German as languages. Out of print in German since 1996, these lectures remain the best available introduction, in any language, not only to Greek, Latin, and comparative syntax but also to many topics in the history and pre-history of Greek and Latin, and their relations with other languages. Other subjects, such as the history of grammatical terminology, are also brilliantly dealt with. This new edition supplements the German original by providing a translation of all quotations and examples, a large number of detailed footnotes offering background information and suggestions for further reading, and a single bibliography which brings together Wackernagel's references and those added in the notes.

Book No Boundaries

Download or read book No Boundaries written by Lillian Hoddeson and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any great university, the University of Illinois owes its prominence to the excellence of its faculty. In Lillian Hoddeson's No Boundaries, twenty-three scholars provide easily accessible vignettes about University of Illinois faculty who have made major contributions to their fields, to knowledge, and to the world. Here are many of the most inspiring--and often most amusing--people whose work elevated the University of Illinois into a world leader in a variety of areas. Their lives demonstrate again and again that the work of the University takes place as much away from campus as on it: Oscar Lewis's pioneering studies of poverty in Mexico, for example, Ralph Grim's geological work in Africa, and Nathan Newmark's architectural work in Mexico City. Here also are insights into the remarkable careers of classicist William Oldfather, chemist Roger Adams, the amazing double Nobel Prize-winning physicist John Bardeen, and accounts of Katharine Sharp's work that made the University of Illinois Library into a national treasure. Also included are the legendary contributions of the University of Illinois to computer science, biochemistry, history, literary study, and electronic music.
