Book IMPROVING LEADERSHIP IN STUDENT AFFAIRS ADMINISTRATION

Download or read book IMPROVING LEADERSHIP IN STUDENT AFFAIRS ADMINISTRATION written by Arthur Sandeen and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If student affairs is to continue to advance as a vital part of the administration of colleges and universities, it is essential to focus on the role of leadership in the profession. The major purpose of this book is to provide learning opportunities for those who aspire to become senior student affairs leaders by presenting a variety of realistic case studies for discussion and debate. By thinking through the issues presented in the case and by considering the advantages and disadvantages of the various options presented for resolving the issues, readers will increase their understanding of the role of student affairs leadership. The test includes an introductory chapter about the current state of leadership in student affairs and also provides insight into the expectations institutions have for the future. The 18 cases are organized in four sections: Initiating programs, revising and implementing policy, developing effective structures, and responding to specific issues. The topics for the cases were selected to present many different kinds of problems and issues representing public and private, urban and rural, and large and small institutions. This book provides students with a source of excellent interaction and discussion, and it is offered as another key component to the lengthy process of learning how to become an effective student affairs leader.

Book A Day in the Life of a College Student Leader

Download or read book A Day in the Life of a College Student Leader written by Sarah M. Marshall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sarah Marshall and Anne Hornak have done a magnificent job exploring diverse contexts in which college students expand their individual leadership capacity and learn and practice engaging in relational leadership with others. These cases are realistic because they were gathered from their interviews with real students engaging in leadership. From whatever perspective, students can learn that they are doing leadership when they work with others to address shared issues, solve shared problems, and work toward positive change.” - from the Foreword by Susan R. Komives This book presents over 230 case studies that reflect typical issues faced by undergraduate student leaders. The scenarios cover the range of functional areas of student life. These cases are intended for use by faculty and student affairs professionals as training tools for new student leaders who generally receive little preparation before assuming their positions. Cases provide an opportunity for students to roleplay and discuss scenarios before they encounter potentially similar events in their daily lives as leaders; engage students intensely in their learning, as they work through the issues and problems; and promote meaningful dialogue and discussion of relevant theory. The cases are based on real life dilemmas, and reflect both contemporary and historical campus issues. They are derived from interviews with 110 undergraduates and 11 student affairs administrators from large public research institutions, small privates, community colleges, and mid-sized comprehensive schools. The book begins with guidance on how to use case studies effectively, and on how to incorporate theory in analyzing them. The cases are then grouped into chapters, each of which focuses on a particular type of student organization. The cases vary in length to allow for multiple uses. Shorter cases can be role played and discussed in leadership training workshops, while longer cases can be used as take home assignments or debated during longer training sessions. The book concludes with general advice for student leaders. To assist with the facilitation process, the authors provide discussion questions to begin the analysis of each case. The cases are written broadly enough to allow for a variety of possible solutions.

Book Student Governance and Institutional Policy

Download or read book Student Governance and Institutional Policy written by Michael T. Miller and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities face a variety of challenges in meeting the needs of students, and one of the greatest is their ability to respond to student needs while protecting institutional and academic integrity. For those working with students, a primary example of this challenge is the involvement of students in shared decision-making, a process often developed and fostered through organizations such as student government. Few discussions have embraced the challenges of shared governance with students, particularly within the past two decades. This book arose from continuous conversations with college and university administrators and policy makers who struggle daily with the decision-making process and the role of student voices. The volume is also intended to be an extension of the Julie Caplow and Michael Miller volume on Policy and University Governance (2003) that looked at internal and external governance issues and their impact on institutional policy formation and decision-making. The collections of chapters included here provide a comprehensive view of student involvement in policy formation and decisionmaking. The volume begins with a general overview of the challenges associated with investing students with power, authored by Tulane University’s Morolaké O. Laosebikan-Buggs. Michael Miller and Daniel Nadler then provide a rationale as to why students have been involved in shared decision-making in the past, outline the benefits and problems historically associated with student shared governance, and offer some meaningful recommendations for continuing to work with students.

Book Student Leadership Development Within Student Government at Snow College

Download or read book Student Leadership Development Within Student Government at Snow College written by Gordon Ned Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the leadership development process of former student leaders at Snow College. More specifically, the study focused on understanding how, when, and where leadership development took place in their "lived experience" within the student government at Snow College (Van Manen, 1998). Examining the lived experiences of these former college student leaders has helped bring forth the essence of their student leadership development process as it related to the Snow College student government program. The study identified key themes, formal and informal techniques, or common threads of success or failure that contributed to the knowledge base of student leadership development in this community college setting. Through a phenomenological inquiry, eight former student government leaders were interviewed. Two principle research questions guided the design of this study: (a) While you were a student leader at Snow College, how did your leadership skills and abilities develop? (b) While you were a student at Snow College, how did the institution specifically contribute to your growth and development as a student leader? Analysis of data yielded eight central themes, with 16 sub-themes nested within the central themes. Four broad themes and seven sub-themes emerged from the first research question. They include: (1) Opportunities and three sub-themes: (a) Learning to serve and the changes that take place, (b) Inclusion and putting others first, (c) Learning by doing. (2) Structured Experiences and two sub-themes: (a) Student government, (b) Other experiences from being involved, (3) The influence of mentors, specifically advisors, (4) The formal Education Process and two sub-themes: (a) The Leadership Class, (b) Conferences and Retreats. Four broad themes and nine sub-themes emerged from research question two. They include: (1) Snow College student government provided hands-on experiences, (2) Culture and three sub-themes (a) Invited participation, (b) The student is important to the institution, (c) Leadership driven environment, (3) Professional Support and four sub-themes: (a) Professional mentors, (b) Taught by example, (c) The college president, (d) High expectations to learn and do, (4) Education and two sub-themes: (a) The leadership class, (b) An established environment for active learning. Emerging from these thematic descriptions were six observations that demonstrated how student leadership development took place at Snow College: (a) An Elected Position within Student Government was the Catalyst for Leadership Development; (b) There was an Institutional Culture at Snow College that Supported Student Leadership Development; (c) Professional and Engaged Advisors played a Intentional Key Role in Student Leadership Development; (d) The Structured Formal Learning Forums within Student Government are Important to Leadership Development; (e) The Informal, yet Structured, Hands-On Experiences Provided Teaching Moments that made a Lasting Impression on these Participants; and (f) Unstructured yet Urgent Situational Leadership Decisions Connected to the Positions held within Student Government created Real Life Opportunities to Learn Leadership Skills. Recommendations include: (a) Student government or some other significant student life program that will provide heightened leadership opportunities that will allow a student leader to practice or have hands-on leadership experiences; (b) The institution should have a culture that values the importance of student leadership development at all levels and lends support by creating opportunities for others including administration to mentor student leaders; (c) The institution's primary goal is to educate, and this goal needs to be carried over to the leadership development program; (d) The institution should hire professional full-time advisors for their student life organizations such as student government or whatever organization is part of the student leadership development program; (e) There should be informal orchestrated experiences that help shape leadership skills and abilities in student leaders; and (f) The student leaders should be allowed hands-on experiences that are real and impactful such as those experienced by the study participants in student government at Snow College.
