Book Composite Structures

Download or read book Composite Structures written by J.N. Reddy and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of composite materials has increased steadily durlog the past two decades, particularly in aerospace, underwater and autornative structures. This is largely because many composite materials exhibit high strength-to-weight and stiffness to-weight ratios, which make them ideally suited for use in weight-sensitive structures. In addition, many of these materials are more corrosion resistant and more thermally stable than metals. The many advantages of composite materials will play an even larger role in future generations of military and transportation vehicles, as weil as in recreational, athletic, and medical equipment, and numerous other applications. To take advantage of the full potential of composite materials, structural engineers and designers must have extremely accurate tools of testing, analysis and design methods at their disposal. The testing and analysis of composite materials is complicated because of: the anisotropic structural behavior resulting from complicated constituent interactions, and . many special requirements of composite structures that are either not present in their metallic Counterparts or only characteristic of composite materials (e.g., delaminations, terminating plies, matrix cracks, fiber buclding and breakage, and many other local mechanisms). In the last decade there have been many significant contributions made by chemists, material scientists, and mathematicians toward the development of better material systems, test and evaluation methods, kinematic and constitutive models, and analysis methods. It is essential to periodically synthesize all developments and identify trends and future directions in research and industrial applications of composite materials.

Book Design of Structures in Composite Materials Basic Data and Interdisciplinary Action

Download or read book Design of Structures in Composite Materials Basic Data and Interdisciplinary Action written by I. C. Taig and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two papers that are contained in this Report were given as pilot papers in October 1975 before the new group within the Structures and Materials Panel dealing with Composite Materials. The first of these papers points out and defines the three levels of materials data (Acceptance data, Materials Characterization data and Design data) that the author believes are needed to establish a design and manufacturing process that will allow the safe and efficient use of composite materials in aircraft. The paper points out some of the gaps between characterization and design, and it proposes some types of testing and data that may fill these gaps. It proposes that the present burdensome requirement that every primary composite component have its own development program can be eliminated if components are built in standardized ways from a finite family of layups and using previously developed structural elements. The second paper points out the vastly increased significance of the design engineering/materials engineering interface in the development of advanced composite structures. To achieve a smooth-working design/materials interface, the paper suggests long-term emphasis in three specific areas: education (on the industrial level and also back to the colleges and universities); interdisciplinary development of advanced composites; and development of composites test standards.
