Book Structures and Materials Assessment for Hypersonic Vehicle Technology

Download or read book Structures and Materials Assessment for Hypersonic Vehicle Technology written by Robert G. Guyton and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis and assessment program was conducted to evaluate the relative merits of candidate radiative thermo-structural configurations for a hypersonic L/D=3 reentry vehicle having a useful payload capacity. The report discusses the effects of vehicle configuration on overall structural design and attempts to assign the refractory metallic alloys to their most efficient range of design utilization expressed in terms of time-temperature-loads environmental inputs. One section of the report is devoted to the conceptual design and integration of variable geometry structure to a high L/D vehicle, with an assessment of the design penalties and problem areas incurred due to the use of variable geometry surfaces. The report identifies the analysis rationale employed in the derivation of the findings and conclusions offered in this report. The study considered the elements of design efficiency, construction techniques and processes, cost-availability considerations, and reliability in the overall investigation of the several candidate thermostructural systems. Book Review and Evaluation of the Air Force Hypersonic Technology Program

Download or read book Review and Evaluation of the Air Force Hypersonic Technology Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-09-05 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken in response to a request by the U.S. Air Force that the National Research Council (NRC) examine whether the technologies that underlie the concept of a hypersonic, air-launched, air-breathing, hydrocarbon-fueled missile with speeds up to Mach 81 can be demonstrated in time to be initially operational by 2015. To conduct the study, the NRC appointed the Committee on Review and Evaluation of the Air Force Hypersonic Technology Program, under the auspices of the Air Force Science and Technology Board.

Book Re Entry and Vehicle Design

Download or read book Re Entry and Vehicle Design written by Donald P. Legalley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballistic Missile and Space Technology, Volume IV: Re-Entry and Vehicle Design focuses on the advancements of processes, methodologies, and technologies involved in re-entry and vehicle design, including hypersonics, material structures, propulsion, and communications. The selection first offers information on the pyrolysis of plastics in a high vacuum arc image furnace and aerothermodynamic feasibility of graphite for hypersonic glide vehicles. Discussions focus on aerothermochemical behavior of graphite, transient heat conduction, equilibrium glide trajectory, and apparatus and pyrolysis procedure. The text then takes a look at an engineering analysis of the weights of ablating systems for manned reentry vehicles and trajectories of lifting bodies entering planetary atmospheres at shallow angles. The manuscript ponders on propulsive control of atmospheric entry lifting trajectories, re-entry engineering mechanics, and rocket casing behavior predicted by laboratory tests. Topics include description of testing program, full-scale casing results, camera design, theoretical correlation, approximate thrust vector optimization, and propellant weight estimation. The selection is a dependable reference for astronauts and researchers interested in re-entry and vehicle design.

Book Evaluation of the National Aerospace Initiative

Download or read book Evaluation of the National Aerospace Initiative written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aerospace Initiative (NAI) was conceived as a joint effort between the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to sustain the aerospace leadership of the United States through the acceleration of selected aerospace technologies: hypersonic flight, access to space, and space technologies. The Air Force became concerned about the NAI's possible consequences on Air Force programs and budget if NAI program decisions differed from Air Force priorities. To examine this issue, it asked the NRC for an independent review of the NAI. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on three questions asked by the Air Force: is NAI technically feasible in the time frame laid out; is it financially feasible over that period; and is it operationally relevant.

Book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures

Download or read book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures written by Sook-Ying Ho and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.
