Book excerpt: This study investigated the use of structured art activities using preferred sensory materials and visual supports to increase communication and decrease challenging behaviors at a three week summer camp. Three boys participated in a single subject design study. Challenging behaviors were identified for each subject and frequency observed before, during and after the intervention. Goals for all subjects to increase initiations and responses to questions and comments were also targeted. Variable results across the subjects indicated that the structured activities did decrease challenging behaviors most days but that the communication targets were impacted by the opportunities provided in the setting. Implications for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study was designed to determine the efficacy of art therapy as a therapeutic intervention in promoting communication and socialization skills for children within the Autistic Spectrum in school. The procedures required the participants to engage in art activities, designed to promote social interaction and communication. The participants social and communication skills were measured with the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). Parents and teachers of the participants were asked to complete the SRS before and after the group sessions. The group sessions were held during and in school. The group met one day a week for five weeks. Statistical significance was found in participants' individual SRS score results, however, more group sessions and a larger sample size is needed to yield statistically significant results.
