Book excerpt: Groundwater has long been an object of intense scrutiny. Only recently have methods become available that permit ecologists, hydrologists, and environmental scientists to assess the biotic and abiotic status of these all-important aquifers. - The dynamics of water movement through complex subterranean ecosystems - The biological organization and the factors that constrain these ecosystems - Alluvial and karst ecosystem functions - Contamination, management, and remediation

Book excerpt: LA PREMIERE PARTIE DE CE DOCUMENT CONSISTE A EVALUER LA CAPACITE D'UNE DEMARCHE TRADITIONNELLE ET DE SES OUTILS, A ETUDIER, DECRIRE ET REPRESENTER LA STRUCTURE ET LE FONCTIONNEMENT DES AQUIFERES KARSTIQUES. POUR CE FAIRE, APRES AVOIR PRESENTE LES DIFFERENTES VISIONS ET APPROCHES DU MILIEU KARSTIQUE, IL EST MIS EN EVIDENCE LA SPECIFICITE ET LA DIVERSITE DES AQUIFERES KARSTIQUES. POUR CECI, IL EST FAIT APPEL A L'APPROCHE THERMODYNAMIQUE DU KARST QUI CONSTITUE UN ELEMENT INDISPENSABLE A LA COMPREHENSION DE LA STRUCTURE ET DU FONCTIONNEMENT DU MILIEU ET QUI PERMET DE DISTINGUER LES GRANDS TYPES D'AQUIFERE KARSTIQUE. C'EST A PARTIR DE LA RECONNAISSANCE DE CES GRANDS TYPES QU'EST ENSUITE EVALUEE LA VALIDITE D'EMPLOI DES LOIS ET METHODES DE L'HYDRAULIQUE SOUTERRAINE TRADITIONNELLE. LA DEUXIEME PARTIE PROPOSE UNE METHODOLOGIE D'ETUDE APPLIQUEE DES AQUIFERES KARSTIQUES BASEE SUR UNE APPROCHE FONCTIONNELLE. LES METHODES EXISTANTES SONT TOUT D'ABORD PRESENTEES SUCCINCTEMENT, PUIS, DEUX POINTS PARTICULIERS SONT PLUS PRECISEMENT ABORDES A PARTIR DE RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX : L'EVALUATION DES RESERVES A PARTIR DE L'ETUDE DES COURBES DE TARISSEMENT ET LES PROBLEMES POSES PAR L'INTERPRETATION DES ESSAIS DE POMPAGE. ENFIN, UN EXEMPLE D'APPLICATION METTANT EN OEUVRE LA METHODOLOGIE LORS DE L'ETUDE DE TROIS SYSTEMES KARSTIQUES DE LA DROME (FRANCE) EST PRESENTE.

This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the results and findings of the advanced research carried out in a pilot area with a thorough investigation of the structure and functioning of an aquifer in a granitic formation. It characterizes the hard rock aquifer system and examines its properties and behavior as well as systematically details the geophysical, geological and remote sensing applications to conceptualize such an aquifer system.

Download or read book Karst Hydrology written by Ognjen Bonacci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karst is characterized particularly by special landforms and sub surface drainage. The various actions of water result in numerous variations of surface and sub-surface karst forms. They also bring about distinctive geologic-morphologic forms, and more striking ly, specific flora and fauna. The scientific discipline of hydrology, although a long-established science, cannot easily be applied to karst regions with their very complex drainage system. A special approach is therefore necessary to understand and predict water circulation in these areas. This is the viewpoint we must adopt if hydrology is to solve the complex problems of karst phenomena. This book can be seen as the appeal of a hydrologist to experts from different scientific dis ciplines (geology, hydrology, geomorphology, geography, geo physics, meteorology, ecology, civil engineering, forestry, agricul ture, etc.) to collaborate towards a better understanding of karst areas. Evidently, karst phenomena have not been sufficiently and carefully studied worldwide. It is equally true that the first theories on water circulation in karst were developed according to ex periences in the Dinaric karst. This can easily be explained. In habitants in those areas had no place to which to escape, as was the case in other countries.
Download or read book Processes in Karst Systems written by Wolfgang Dreybrodt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karst Systems deal with the question of how the subsurface drainage system, typical of Karst areas develops from its initial state to maturity. Equal attention is given to physical, chemical and geological conditions which determine karstification. The reader will find discussions of mass transport, chemical kinetics, hydrodynamics of fluxes, and the role of dissolution and precipitation of Calcite as they occur in experiments and natural environments. It offers a wealth of information on a complex natural system to hydrologists, hydrochemists, geologists and geographers.
