Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery by the author and collaborators of superconductivity in the first truly layered compound, TaS2(pyridine)1/2, there have been many types of layered superconductors. These include the graphite intercalation compounds, the transition metal dichalcogenides, the intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides, the organic layered superconductors, the high-temperature cuprates, the various types of artificial multilayers, strontium ruthenate, magnesium diboride, the ternary intermetallics, the quaternary intermetallics or borocarbides, the iron pnictides and oxypnictides, the iron chalcogenides, and the intercalated metal nitride halides. In the development of this huge field, an underlying theme has always been to try to develop a room-temperature superconductor. Since most of the superconductors with the highest transition temperatures are layered, this book compares and contrasts the wide variety of materials and their properties. It should serve as a guide for young experimentalists hoping to make a room-temperature superconductor. In addition, the book presents the three classes of phenomenological theoretical descriptions of layered superconductors: the anisotropic London model, the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau model, and the Lawrence-Doniach model specifically developed to treat layered superconductors. Calculations using these models for the upper and lower critical fields are presented in detail, accessible to graduate students wanting to learn the basics of widely-used theoretical descriptions.

Book Metallic Multilayers and their Applications

Download or read book Metallic Multilayers and their Applications written by Gayanath Fernando and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin Metallic multilayer films have become an important part in today's computer technology. The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, which plays a central role here, was discovered in the late 1980s. This can be essentially described as the effect of a magnetic field on the electron transport leading to significant changes in the resistance. Other aspects of multilayers systems, such as stability, growth, confinement are also addressed. Theoretical and experimental methods used in such work are described in some detail, with special emphasis on density functional and spin density functional theories. Magnetic anisotropy in thin films is also discussed while addressing unresolved issues and new results from exchange-bias experiments. Discusses the GMR effect What makes multilayers interesting and useful? What are the latest discoveries in this field? Simple insights in to the physics behind multilayers Novel concepts at small length scales Theoretical and experimental background

Book Concise Encyclopedia of Semiconducting Materials Related Technologies

Download or read book Concise Encyclopedia of Semiconducting Materials Related Technologies written by S. Mahajan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of electronic materials and particularly advances in semiconductor technology have played a central role in the electronics revolution by allowing the production of increasingly cheap and powerful computing equipment and advanced telecommunications devices. This Concise Encyclopedia, which incorporates relevant articles from the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Materials Science and Engineering as well as newly commissioned articles, emphasizes the materials aspects of semiconductors and the technologies important in solid-state electronics. Growth of bulk crystals and epitaxial layers are discussed in the volume and coverage is included of defects and their effects on device behavior. Metallization and passivation issues are also covered. Over 100 alphabetically arranged articles, written by world experts in the field, are each intended to serve as the first source of information on a particular aspect of electronic materials. The volume is extensively illustrated with photographs, diagrams and tables. A bibliography is provided at the end of each article to guide the reader to recent literature. A comprehensive system of cross-references, a three-level subject index and an alphabetical list of articles are included to aid readers in the abstraction of information.

Book Physics Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered Structures

Download or read book Physics Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered Structures written by Claude Weisbuch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-dimensional materials are of fundamental interest in physics and chemistry and have also found a wide variety of technological applica tions in fields ranging from microelectronics to optics. Since 1986, several seminars and summer schools devoted to low-dimensional systems have been supported by NATO. The present one, Physics, Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered structures, brought together specialists from different fields in order to review fabrication techniques, charac terization methods, physics and applications. Artificially layered materials are attractive because alternately layering two (or more) elements, by evaporation or sputtering, is a way to obtain new materials with (hopefully) new physical properties that pure materials or alloys do not allow. These new possibilities can be ob tained in electronic transport, optics, magnetism or the reflectivity of x-rays and slow neutrons. By changing the components and the thickness of the layers one can track continuously how the new properties appear and follow the importance of the multilayer structure of the materials. In addition, with their large number of interfaces the study of inter face properties becomes easier in multilayered structures than in mono layers or bilayers. As a rule, the role of the interface quality, and also the coupling between layers, increases as the thickness of the layer decreases. Several applications at the development stage require layer thicknesses of just a few atomic layers.

Book Superconductivity of Transition Metals

Download or read book Superconductivity of Transition Metals written by S.V. Vonsovsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should fill a gap which has existed in the literature on supercon ductivity. There have been a number of excellent textbooks available on the phenomenon of superconductivity, which describe in detail the variety of ef fects connected with it and the mathematical techniques to deal with them properly. However, until now there has not been a textbook available in English which concentrates on the mate~ial aspects of superconductivity. This is a major shortcoming since most physicists working in the field of superconduc tivity are mainly concerned with specific materials and subsequently often need to know more about the interplay of superconductivity and material prop erties. On the other hand, people working in the field know that a competent and well-written book by S. V. Vonsovsky, V. A. Izyumov, and E. Z. Kurmaev has been available in Russian. It presents a thorough discussion of superconducting transition-metal alloys and compounds. This volume is a translation of an updated version of the Russian edition. The translation was done by A. P. Zavarnitsyn of the authors' institution and by Dr. E. H. Brandt of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Metallforschung in Stuttgart. The master manuscript was ably typed by Mrs. C. Pendl. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of them. I sincerely hope that the book will turn out to be useful to physicists working in the field of superconductivity as well as to nonspecialists and interested graduate students.
