Book Surface Integrity of Machined Structural Components

Download or read book Surface Integrity of Machined Structural Components written by William P. Koster and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program has been run to evaluate the effects of different metal removal methods and variations of these methods on surface integrity. Three alloys were studied: beta rolled Ti-6Al-4V; AISI 4340, quenched and tempered, 50 Rc; and Inconel 718, solution treated and aged. Various grinding procedures caused the titanium alloy to exhibit a fatigue strength range of 13 to 62 ksi. The fatigue strength of 4340 due to grinding variables ranged from 62 to 102 ksi, while Inconel 718 showed a range of 24 to 60 ksi. Abusive grinding conditions always resulted in fatigue strengths at the minimum of these ranges. Milling variables exhibited a fatigue strength range of 32 to 72 ksi in the beta rolled titanium alloy. EDM and ECM on Inconel 718 yielded 22 and 39 ksi, respectively, compared to 60 ksi for gentle grinding. Guidelines for processing aerospace hardware considering surface integrity requirements are presented in the report.

Book Tensile Surface Structures

Download or read book Tensile Surface Structures written by Michael Seidel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile surface structures are the visual expression of an intensive rethinking of the topic of building envelopes by designers. Advances in design methods, materials, construction elements and assembly and erection planning in the field of lightweight construction are enabling ever more exacting applications of tensile structures with envelope and structural functions, especially in roofing over large clear spans without internal support. However, the particular mechanical characteristics of the materials used in the construction of textile structures demand consideration of the question of "buildability". This book provides answers by discussing the fundamental influence of material manufacture and assembly in deciding the most suitable type of building or structure and its detailing in the design process. The fundamentals of material composition, manufacturing process, patterning and the behaviour of flexible structural systems are all explained here, as well as their use as structural and connection elements, and special attention is given to the erection of wide-span lightweight structures. The erection equipment is described, as well as the lifting and tensioning process and the construction methods used to erect the characteristic types of tensile structures, illustrated with a selection of example projects.

Book Interatomic Potential and Structural Stability

Download or read book Interatomic Potential and Structural Stability written by Kiyoyuki Terakura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural stability is of fundamental importance in materials science. Up-to-date information on the theoretical aspects of phase stability of materials is contained in this volume. Most of the first-principles calculations are based on the local-density approximation (LDA). In contrast, this volume contains very recent results of "going beyond LDA", such as the density gradient expansion and the quantum Monte-Carlomethod. Following the recently introduced theoretical methods for the calculation of interatomic potentials, forces acting on atoms and total energies such as the Car-Parrinello, the effective-medium and the bond-ordermethod, attempts have been made to develop even more sophisticated methods such as the order-N method in electronic-structure calculations. The present status of these methods and their application to real systems are described. In addition, in order to study the phase stability atfinite temperatures, the microscopic calculations have to be combined with statistical treatment of the systems to describe, e.g. order-disorder transitions on the Si(001) surface or alloy phase diagrams. This book contains examples for this type of calculations.

Book Base 1 method A structural functional approach to word sentence and discourse readability

Download or read book Base 1 method A structural functional approach to word sentence and discourse readability written by Bernd Nuss and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2018 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text readability is at the core of successful reading instruction and language learning. To counteract the challenges of complex reading content, text leveling is a vital necessity for readers with limited language access. A transdisciplinary analysis of reading development and linguistic interrelations builds the theoretical foundation of the base-1 method. This method focuses solely on structural and functional text elements on the word, sentence and cohesion level. But this book also discusses the significance of other prevalent readability factors, such as the reader ́s language knowledge or socio-cultural background. The base-1 method is designed to level early reading texts in German and other alphabetic languages. Experimental tests with a German immersion population has led to a preliminary calibration to demonstrate the validity of this approach. Bernd Nuss has worked as an educator and facilitator in English and German language immersion programs all over the Americas and in Europe. In this capacity, he has also been collaborating as a researcher with universities and other educational institutions in Europe, Asia, and the USA.

Book Nanoporous Gold

Download or read book Nanoporous Gold written by Arne Wittstock and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-surface-area materials have recently attracted significant interest due to potential applications in various fields such as electrochemistry and catalysis, gas-phase catalysis, optics, sensors and actuators, energy harvesting and storage. In contrast to classical materials the properties of high-surface-area materials are no longer determined by their bulk, but by their nanoscale architecture. Nanoporous gold (np-Au) represents the fascinating class of mesoporous metals that have been intensively investigated in recent years. The current interest and the increasing number of scientific publications show that np-Au by itself is an outstanding nano-material that justifies a book devoted to all aspects of its properties and applications. The resulting publication is a discussion of this unique nano-material and is an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the field. The book provides a broad, multi-disciplinary platform to learn more about the properties of nanoporous gold from an inter-disciplinary perspective. It starts with an introduction and overview of state-of-the-art applications and techniques characterizing this material and its applications. It then covers the progress in research within the last years. The chapters are in-depth overviews written by the world's leading scientists in the particular field. Each chapter covers one technique or application so that the reader can easily target their favoured topic and will get the latest and state-of-the-art information in the field.
